My grandfather gave me a collection of pieces found at his old home place. This place has produced a few small black star sapphires as well as regular ones, but he says this is the biggest piece of corundum he's ever seen. We did run the rough stone through a tumbler but we pulled it out being afraid we could damage the sapphire. Beside it is a 7.85ct piece found from the same place(however it was cut by my dad's friend for $10, so the cut is probably terrible and it has never been appraised).

Here is another pic of some more pieces found at the same place and partially tumbled, these are like the one used for the cut stone.

No idea on the large piece, but my guess is not much. The cut sapphire is pretty, but you can get ones very similar, with much more defined "stars" for a couple hundred bucks. So I'd say sentimental value more than financial. But that's just a guess...

Here are some examples:

I am sorry to say that all the pieces do not look promising, in terms of financial value. However, there is much sentimental value since they are gemstones "mined" by your grandfather near his home / hometown.
