I am sorry but it is impossible to ID a gemstone by pictures alone.

ok thanks chrono i want to have this checked but I read this "Green diamonds pose a particular problem, in that it is very difficult to determine whether their color is natural or treated. Laboratories sometimes need to test a stone for almost a year in order to issue their certificate, and if there is the slightest doubt, they use the term "undeterminable", which is a real problem for the owner." What do you suggest chrono thanks?

This is true but at this point in time, I would only trust GIA to make that determination. Is this your ring? It sounds like you have reason to doubt its authenticity. Determining whether it is lab grown is easy for GIA. Determining whether it is irradiated isn't easy, even for GIA (or any other lab).

My Mom gave it to me. She is not sure if it is green diamond or just colored stone. Thanks

In that case, I would first have a gemmologist (who specializes in coloured stones, not just sapphires and diamonds) do some basic testing on it. A simple RI reading will tell you whether it is a diamond or coloured stone. From there, if it is a diamond, you can check other characteristics to see whether it is natural or synthetic, then move on to whether it is untreated or treated. If it is a coloured stone, it will require other testing to determine its gem type. A lab does the same but generally have more experience and has more specialized tools.

Ok thank you very much for your advice. It's a big help I appreciate it! Thanks! God Bless!

If they're diamonds, they're highly likely to be irradiated, but natural. While synthetic green diamonds are around, irradiated greens are much more common and by the style of the ring, my guess is they weren't available, or readily available, when that ring was made. Is it a new piece or an older piece from your mother's collection?

Good luck!

I was actually going to ask when irradiating diamonds was an available option and then ask how long b4r has had this ring in the family! Would be amazing if it is a natural green diamond :D

Hello TL my Mom had this for almost 5 years, not too long. Thanks

I still suspect irradiation because natural color green diamonds are exceedingly rare, and to find matching ones like that, is difficult. Whether irradiated or synthetic, I think the price points may be similar.

Ok thanks TL!

I wish that Kenny were here. He was our resident colored diamond expert. He had a nice, OEC green diamond with a natural on the girdle which was kept during cutting to prove that the color was natural. I didn't quite understand the whole thing, but if he were here, I am sure he could explain it.

Kenny? Please come back. I hope you safe and happy somewhere.

Maybe you remember a small deep forestgreen round from Leibish ( Loverskites posted the stone).

On another forum I discussed this stone and some experts there told us that GIA knows how to seperate natural green from treated stones but they keep it as a secret.

The natural is important if the untreated stone has natural green dots ( from natural radiation = deeper green dots) - the cutter will not cut this away.

An artifical irradiated and annealed diamond has no dots or the dots are brown after annealing. But I don't how GIA seperates natural very light green from treated ones.....

Problem - if the industry know how GIA test it they will find a way to fake them.

So deep green - only a trusted vendor like Leibish and a lot of money....

Thanks Pregcurious yes I hope Kenny will be able to read this.

Thanks for the info Marlow!

Re: Is this natural green diamond or just colored stone than

Untreated green diamonds are as rare as hen's teeth and command astronomical prices. If your Mom knows she acquired it about 5 years ago, she likely would also remember, in the event that they are untreated greens, paying exorbitantly for it. While this is not definitive, its another indication that your green stones are something other than an untreated diamond.
