Is this Spinel?

I think it's really hard if not impossible to make definitive statement about wether they are or are not spinels from a picture. You could do a specific gravity test, and best would be to send into a lab.

I will say that's a color that I've seen in many gems, including spinel, and that some show a similar crystal shape to spinel.

How did you obtain these?

These belong to a friend who got it directly from miner and they are mined from a mine in India.

Could be garnet as well. Impossible to tell from a photo.

One thing I noticed is when I use the Neodymium magnet it repels will that confirms that this is garnet?
