Calling all Canadians (or anyone else in "the know")!! I would like to hear from anyone with experience having gems or diamonds shipped from the US to Canada from a US vendor. Were there any complications? What type of additional costs are associated with cross-border shopping like this?

Thanks!

Hi DD

I bought my ering from WF and live in AB. I didn''t have any issues with the vendor, but customs held the ring an extra day (should have been processed the same day) and I had to use every ounce of willpower to not barge in there and yell ''give me my freaking ring already''!

So, even though they say next day shipping, it really turns out to be AT LEAST two days. I recently shipped it back to get resized and repaired and b/c I live in a city where there is no fedex depot, my little ring had to travel here and then back 3 hours to the nearest depot when I wasn''t home to receive the package. It had to sit there ALL NIGHT and I had to wait for the them to come back the next day

That really sucked, but it was my fault for being at work and having the package sent to home.

As far as charges, I just had to pay the GST to customs when I picked it up (the first time...yes I drove 3 hours to get my baby one day early!).

So, in summary I would recommend it but you need to have a bit of patience with customs and have a good local jeweler that you trust so you don''t have to send it away for minor repairs and sizing. HTH!

Thanks Shimmer! So basically all you had to pay was GST when the ring arrived in Canada? There were no other duties to pay?

Nope, just the GST! I was a little shocked too, I expected to pay a lot more (it was under $200, probably closer to $100 can''t remember now!).

I''m not sure but if you live in a province that has PST you might have to pay that too, AB has just GST

Canada dropped the excise tax on jewelry in 2006, which is good news for anyone wanting to purchase from US retailers. My understanding is that this was intended to make Canadian retailers become more competitive, but if your experiences have been the same as mine what it really did was make cross-border shopping more lucrative!

What you will have to pay customs is gst plus the pst of whatever province you are having it shipped to. I live in Alberta luckily. My diamond was purchased at goodoldgold and Leon Mege is setting it. When it''s ready we will decide whether to FedEx it home or just go pick it up and pay customs upon re-entry.

Hope that helps!

Thanks Shimmer and Bem! That makes me feel more confident about ordering from the states!

Hi DD!

I''ve ordered twice from WF - with rave reviews, and I''m planning another one for my Mom''s 60th birthday

I live in TO, and since my company has an account with FedEX (and we''re allowed to use it to ship personal items) I took advantage of our account. WF sent it directly to my office, the receptionist called me when the driver arrived, I opened it (to make sure it was there) and PAAM! done. Super easy. I only paid GST as well, and had to sign a release to WF that I was having it shipped to a corporate account.

Hope that helps. I would have NO problem ordering from the US if I were you. Happy shopping - and make sure to post pics if and when you do!!!

Thanks mela lu! I appreciate your input too, and your words about White Flash!

The US dollar is worth less than the Cdn dollar right now, so I wouldn''t shop across the border, paying US prices, unless you can get one heck of a deal! That''s just my 2 cents though!

Isn''t it correct that the duty-free applies only to loose stones?

My understanding is that excise tax was dropped on jewelry across the board in May 2006? I could be mistaken.

Thanks Beau, I appreciate the suggestion. The issue I am having is locating excellent gem cutters and custom jewelry designers (like Mark Morrell or Leon Mege) who are in Canada... maybe I will post a question about that!

I guess my question kind of goes with this topic, if I decide to purchase a diamond from the US, I know the ring (setting - she wants a "knife edge" solitaire white gold/platinum ring) that my girlfriend wants. What's the best way to do this, would I purchase the diamond, then buy the ring separately then get someone to assemble it here in Canada???? If so, anyone know of a good place to go in Alberta? (I am moving to Calgary soon).

For the other poster suggesting not to buy in US, I cannot find any websites with just Canadian dealers... please post one if you know of a good spot to go.

Any advice would be appreciated!

HI:

Where are you located? As a Canadian who buys online and locally, I can recommend excellent custom designers in Edmonton and Calgary as well as diamond vendors.

cheers--Sharon

Hello Sharon,
Thanks for the reply! I will be living in Calgary come next week!

Hello Sharon,
Thanks for the reply! I will be living in Calgary come next week!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
HI:

Calgary: I highly recommend the following, not listed in any particular order:

Fleetwood Jewellery: ready made jewellery, loose diamonds and gemstones. All diamonds certed and independently appraised. I have not had any custom work done here, but I know they offer this service. Have bought several pieces of diamond jewellery here as have my friends.

The Goldsmiths (on 14th): I''ve purchased several ready made pieces there, and have had custom work done as well. They have their annual "sale" on in January for custom orders....15% off labour I believe it is......

Gold-Craft Jewellery: Had custom work done.

Goldschimiede Studio: Bought ready made pieces there.

Edmonton:

David Keeling Fine Jewellery: had custom work done. David posts on this forum.

Let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

Just thought about this more... if anything this works in Canadians'' favour. Prices for almost everything are lower in the US, and with our dollar on par, we essentially save a bundle. For example, if something typically costs $1000 in the US and $1300 in Canada, then when the US dollar is strong, buying in the US doesn''t make any sense, since with the exchange rate is costs a Canadian as much or more. But with the dollar on par, we pay 30% less in the US, and if it''s true we don''t have to pay duty of jewelry, then this is a great deal!

Am I wrong about this?

Sharon, thank you so much for this info.

So from what I am hearing, sounds like the best thing for me to do is to purchase the diamond from the US and then bring it to a place that does custom rings. Would I need to buy the setting separately as well??? Also, I hear stories about taking a diamond somewhere and people doing the "switch" with a lower grade diamond, I don''t want to get paranoid but I thought i''d ask about that (i''m sure the bad people make the people guilty by association at times).

HI:

You''re welcome! As for what is "best" that is completely up to you in terms of circumstance, budget, timing...whatever works. May I ask why you are wanting a custom setting? You mentioned your GF likes the knife edge solitaire, and this type of setting, because of its classic lines is popular and likely may be purchased outright from many vendors without going the custom route.

cheers--Sharon

Hi Sharon, I guess I am not wanting to go the custom route, but maybe I am not really understanding this whole thing properly!

What I was thinking is if i end up finding a diamond that I really like, at a good price, what if that company does not have the setting that I want ("knife edge type setting")? If they don''t, then I would likely have to buy it from another Vendor, in which I would then have to find someone who knows what they are doing to put it all together for me....

Were you to buy a diamond at one vendor and a setting at another vendor, the vendor from which you bought the setting can usually set the diamond for you, for a fee or otherwise.

HI:

Right. I believe that most of the local vendors I mentioned would set a loose stone for you and provide/make a setting you desire. They would be equally able to supply the loose diamond and provide you with the "whole package".

Buying entirely online is another option. Perhaps you could start your own thread and state your wants/needs and let people here help you with your selection! People here know their stones and settings!!

Hi DD!!

I''m just followed up on this thread, and saw that you were considering buying from one and having it set elsewhere...which is a great idea in some situations. In yours, however, I dont see the benefit.

Not that all knife-edge solitaires are created equally; they are not. However, I''m fairly certain that you would be happy with the selection a lot of the PS vendors offer in white gold, knife-edge. They are typically classic in style, great quality, and extremely reasonably priced (you can go as low as $200!). If I were you, I''d have them set their own stone in their own setting, have it shipped, and then decide.

If you are really not satisfied by the vendors setting, you can always take that piece to a local jeweler and have them re-set it. Chances are you’ll be happy with it, and in the even you are not fully satisfied, you’re only out around $200.

I say this based on personal experience. I thought "how hard is it to set a stone?!" and I learned that some jewelers do not have the same level of detail and attention that our PS vendors do. A perfect example is setting the stone so that the arrows are positioned correctly beween the prongs. A small detail, yes. But why cover-up a beautiful arrow with a prong if you don’t have to!

emteeth.gif

When I had my stone set here in Toronto, the jewler actually reuined my setting with her poor workmanship, and I had to take it elsewhere, (PAY AGAIN for it to be reset) where the new jeweler had to remake my head. It was ugly. In hindsight, I would have just had WF do the setting of the stone.

My friend ordered a H&A stone from WF and had them set it in their knife edge cathedral setting. He did this because he really wasn’t sure what he was looking for in a setting and figured that by spending “only” a little bit on the setting, his fiancé could ‘upgrade’ later if she wanted. Honestly, it was spectacular. The workmanship and the entire piece itself was flawless.

I’m not trying to push you in any direction, but I wanted to relay some real-life experiences for you to weigh in with while making your decision.
