Hi everyone!

Well, the J.Crew "Goddess" dress that I ordered earlier this week arrived at my office this morning. I was surprised by the quality of the dress - it was much better than I thought it would be and a bit weighter. It is more off-white/ivory in color. My co-workers insisted that I try the dress on so I did, in the women''s bathroom!

To be honest, I''m not sure I love the dress on me. I''m not sure if it''s the PMS talking since I''ve been feeling pretty bad and bloated all day. It dress isn''t speaking to me as much as I thought it would. It''s a bit plain, but that''s not the reason why I''m not sure about it. I really can''t pinpoint it, except to say that it doesn''t make my heart flutter as much as I originally thought. I don''t know if it is dress "fatigue", although the last time I tried on a dress was two months ago.

I am letting myself sit on it for a bit - I plan on bringing it home for the holidays to show family and friends, and will drag them to Nicole Miller to try the other dresses that I have been considering. J.Crew has a 60 day return policy, so I am allowing myself some time to think about it.

I ordered it in a petite size 2 as the J.Crew wedding specialists recommended, and it fits really well length-wise. If I keep the dress, I don''t think I need any alterations...just good undergarments. The dress definitely needs to be steamed and/or pressed. It was delivered very wrinkled, as you can see from the pictures.

Please give me your honest opinions....I won''t be offended. The first two pictures were taken by my co-worker. The last few were my attempts to take it without my FI seeing it. I had to do a little twisting to get it done.

Here is the Nicole Miller that is number one on my list...I don''t actually have pictures of myself in it...forgot the camera.

I think it looks like a beautiful dress, although way too low-cut for my taste. Make sure that''s something you''re going to be comfortable with during the hectic wedding day. This J Crew needs a little more structure or body to it; you''re such a small size 2 and I think it makes you look much bigger than you are. I think I do like the Nicole Miller better. Do you have the opportunity to try it on before you have to send this one back?

I know what you mean about not feeling the same way when you get a catalog item in person; this happens to me when I order shirts from Victoria''s Secret-- they use all kinds of deceiving boob pusher-uppers and added structures to their models and/or items that change the way they fit drastically!! May JCrew does this too?

Okay I''ll start.

First off, the dress looks beautiful on you. I think it does hang quite nicely on you, and with heels, the right bra etc I think it would be great. YOu are clearly going to be a gorgeous bride no matter what you wear!!!

However, keeping in mind that I don''t know what you are looking for in a dress, I don''t think it is very wedding-y. While I love alternative/less formal dresses, to me, there is something missing from this dress. I''ll be honest and say that I could be wrong, and with flowers/hair done etc it would be perfect, and it may. But my first instinct is that while it looks great, I think that something along the lines of the Nicole miller may take you from looking beautiful, to looking like a beautiful bride, without getting into traditional ballgown styles.

Hope that helps...just one opinion though!!

I think it looks really lovely on you and that it's perfect for an informal or destination wedding. If your wedding is more formal... the NM dress may be a definite contender. You could dress this one up with a broach on the tie at the waist, the right jewelry and the right headpeice too.

Thank you guys so much for your responses....

I have tried on the Nicole Miller dress and I loved it! But, maybe it''s the "cheap" side of me coming into play, but I just can''t see myself spending nearly $1900 versus $325 on a dress that I am only going to wear for a few hours. Everyone I know is telling me that I can and should spend more money on my dress since I am not having a "formal" wedding...but I''m still having a hard time justifying it to myself.

The reasons why we aren''t having a formal wedding are: 1) my FI and I are really shy and I know I would die of embarassment knowing that people are celebrating, gawking, and fawning at us; 2) I''ve never really been the type of person to "dream" about my wedding...I''m still having a hard time imagining myself in that "white" dress; 3) and my FI and I would rather spend the money towards are first home together (DC is EXPENSIVE).

My FI and I are doing the "beach" wedding thing at a nice resort in Hawaii, so I thought that the J.Crew would work well in that environment. However, the more I think about the dress and how I feel in it, the more I''m thinking of splurging on myself with that Nicole Miller. I''m still going to take some time and wait until I am home in NJ for the holidays....

Thanks again for the comments so far!

I think the top part of the dress looks great on you! I wonder if you wrap the sash around twice, would it further accentuate your waist? Or would you want to find a silk chiffon sash to tie around your waist to make it look more "goddess-y" or ethereal? It would float nicely as you move and dance.

I am not sure if I''m seeing the photos properly, but it looks like the front hem of the dress is a bit too short. I know you said lengthwise, it fits well. But if you wear heels, won''t it be too short? For my own personal taste, I like the front hem to hit the floor.

That Nicole Miller you posted is also beautiful. Try to take photos of you in it if you get a chance!!!

I thought the same...not very wedding-y and something missing. You have a beautiful figure so you''ll look lovely in everything, but I think a more structured dress would really show it off!

You will look beautiful in any dress! But I will have to agree, there is no way I''d spend $1900 on a wedding dress for small wedding.

You should have the dress you want.

In other news, the J Crew looks REALLY good on you. (Of course I would imagine it would be hard to find anything that doesn''t look good on you). Maybe if you had it on with some jewelry or accessories, you would feel more bride-y. Or, maybe it''s just not THE dress for you. That Nicole Miller does look very promising.

I have to agree, you don''t really look like a size two in that dress and I also think it might be a little too simple for what you have planned. Most importantly, you clearly don''t love it. Here are a few things I saw that reminded my of the expensive dress a little more without the price.

HI:

Absolutely. Buying quality and/or what you only hurts once (verses the ((repeated))disappointment or bitterness of seeing your buy fall short of expectations). Get what you really want. You are worth it.

cheers--Sharon

I know I''m in the minority here, but I think that dress is absolutely perfect for a Hawaii beach wedding. It would look so beautiful blowing in the breeze. I do think it needs a great necklace, maybe a lariat (sp?) or something that''s a little longer. I love the low cut of the V and the cross-over on the bodice, and the pleating on the skirt. I have no idea what your hair looks like, but curls with flowers would be so perfect!!

I still love that NM, I just think the JCrew is so perfect for a beach wedding!!! Def take pics when you go try it on again!!

Hi SuLi!
This is so exciting...the dress shopping is the most fun part of being a bride-to-be! YEEEEAH! Being a size 2 is also like winning the jackpot! hee-hee - you lucky girl! You will look wonderful in every single dress so this is going to be the hard part...what to do with soooo many choices! I really like the first dress...with the right accessories it will look even better! The 2nd dress might be hard to keep up unless it offers support...build in support.

I recently bought a dress from Impression (part of the bridesmaid section) - the bonus of this dress is that it comes in sooo many colours and is also available online for half the price ($159-ish) if you''re open to take the risk of internet shopping of course... It''s so flattering on and hugs you in all the right places. I loved the quality of the material...might be a little plain for your liking however with amazing jewelery - all the right sparkles it will look dreamy! You can even replace the small brooch with a bigger brooch (as per 2nd Jenny Dress below) that might spice it up! Perhaps ask a seamstress to add beads... I ordered the dress in black but it''s available in white...TO ALL PS GIRLS GO TRY THIS DRESS you''ll want it in every colour!

One of my all time favorite designers: Jenny Packham. YIKES but before you look at Jenny Packham dresses please prepare yourself for OUCH-prices. I really wanted to wear this dress on my wedding day but it was not available in Canada - Jenny Packham-The Papillon Dress. It''s part of the 2006 collection so you might get it at a better price. I''ve also noticed pre-owned Papillon dresses mainly from UK brides. Just search online for Jenny Packham Papillon and you''ll find a few...

Jenny Packham Papillon and not sure about the 2nd style but it''s also a Jenny Packham dress.

Wow...those Jenny Packham dresses are beautiful! I know of her as a designer, but had no idea that she is designing wedding gowns as well.

I am going to go to Nicole Miller during the winter holidays and make sure to take pictures of that dress. Someone asked if it offered support, and it certainly does. There are built in cups. The top part of the dress is very structured and the bottom just drapes. The more I think about it, the more I am leaning towards it. One of my colleagues purchased her dress and bridesmaids dresses from Pearl''s Place and recommended that I give them a call to inquire about the NM, to see if they offer it discounted.

Thanks again for all your input. This has been a really hard process for me because I don''t have any girlfriends who live here in the DC area. It''s been really hard dress shopping by myself, and harder to get all of my family and friends together to go dress shopping when I occassionally travel back to NJ.
