I was talking with some friends over the weekend, one of whom is Jewish and engaged, and she had an awesome idea that I thought I''d share in case it''s helpful to anyone.

So there''s the wedding canopy... the chuppah? And I guess if you''re not getting married in a synagogue, it can be a problem or expensive to procure one? Well, my friend sat down and asked herself: what is light, easy to transport, inexpensive, and suitable.

The answer? Bamboo poles. You can get them at garden stores for about $2 each, apparently. They weigh nothing, they''re recyclable, and sturdy and easy to decorate. Then you put hook shaped screws in the top, and use that to attach whatever fabric roof of your choice ... my friend is using a prayer shawl. Total cost: about $15. Total hassle: minimal.

To get them to stand up you can either have people actually hold them up, or else bet four sturdy flower pots and fill them with either bags of water or sand. Decorate or cover the tops, and away you go!

I was so impressed with her ingenuity, so I thought I''d share in case it''s helpful to anyone.

That is what we are doing and we are having friends hold the poles (ours are wood). I just have to make sure that his tallit is big enough. The other idea that I saw was to have the poles made (either yourself or by a professional) and then you can turn them into a canopy bed.

imho, this is what a real huppah is supposed to be. portable, accessible. none of this silly pseudo-tent with oodles of fabric. (no offense to those going for a more complex version -- i just don''t get it).
