Hi, I recently bought a .75 ct near colorless non-certified marquise. I paid 3200.00. I love it but wish it was a little larger. I went back to the mall jewler I bought it from because I can exchange or return it for 90 days no questions ask. The 1.0 ct they had that were non-certified run around 4999.00 and were not much bigger and had a yellow tinge. I need the stone to be white due to the side sides of the ring. The mall store said it was their value price and that was the lowest???? The price seems high for non-cert and yellow. I am new at this so I don''t know what price would be considered a good deal on a 1.0 -1.25 white stone

I see... well, non-certified stones are not listed around here, but those with certs run as much as yours. It doesn't sound like the seller made any discount for the lack of cert.

Assuming G to I color and SI1 clarity, prices seem to go from 3200 to 5000 for 1.2 to 1.4cts (there isn't much around 1.25 cts). There are quite a few stones to look at and you can compare the size of yours with those listed. Even if you don't want to buy online, comparing prices can't hurt, no

The problem with non-cert stones is that you really have to know how to judge a diamond or absolutely trust the jeweler. Since you''re getting this at a chain store, do you have that much faith in their honesty to you? Certs don''t cost that much. To me, it''s totally worth the piece of mind and ability to pricematch stones w/ the same specs. I have a neighbor who owns a jewelry store and I still wouldn''t trust their opinion entirely on a non-cert stone cuz we''re not that close.

I don''t know anything about what the store showed you but assuming if you saw some yellow it was at best a J color and average clarity being SI1, when I ran those numbers through the search engine here it pulled up around 5 diamonds in 1.01 to 1.05 range. The prices averaged about $3000. So at $4400 that the store wanted for a similar (or worse) quality stone sounds like almost a 50% markup over what you can get here.

On my recent shopping trips I was appalled to see how many B&M stores were selling I color, I1 or I2 clarity, in their mounted and even loose diamonds, and charging much higher prices that I thought they should. Some of these even had certs. I guess that is what PS is here for...to educate you so you don''t buy THOSE diamonds.

$4999 seems a bit much for a 1 carat marquise. When we bought my first e-ring we didn''t do our research (too excited to be engaged and didn''t really know enough) so we purchased a 1.02 carat radiant at a chain B&M and only paid $3999 without a cert. It was H, SI1 so not a bad diamond at all. Now, this diamond would sell for the same or less (I checked pricing because we wanted to trade-in with my recent upgrade).

Ask the store to bring in some loose diamonds for you to view in the color range you need. It should only take them a few days to get some in. I figure you need something in the F-H color range if you want the diamond to appear white. Or just return the diamond and work with some of the PriceScope vendors. WhiteFlash seems to have many satisfied customers around here lately.
