Yesterday I was crossing the street between my office and lab and I noticed a tow truck on the side of the road. I saw two girls standing idly by their car while the tow truck driver changed a tire for them. I remember before I took my first long(ish) road trip by myself my mother made sure I knew how to do this on my own. I was 17. She felt like every woman should be able to change her own tire.

So I thought it would be fun to start a thread with things that you think that every woman should be able do to on her own.

I''ll start...

1. Change a tire
2. Operate basic power tools (i.e. drill to hang her own curtain rods)
3. Jump start a car

OOOOHHH Good thread!!!

What women should be able to do...

1. Reset the breaker box if the lights go out
2. Change a tire (Absoulte must..I''m coping Clairitek)
3. Change the time on a VCR

I''m going to add the opposite for consideration...

What men should be able to do....

1. Laundry without shrinking anything.
2. Sew a hole in a shirt
3. Match colors...i.e appropriate shirt with corresponding tie

1. The big "o"

2. Rinse
3. Repeat

LOL @ Deco!!!

Cute idea for a thread! I agree with everyone else (though I need to learn to change a tire
15.gif
) so I will add:

Kill bugs
Assemble Ikea-type furniture

* negotiate prices/loans for cars and houses!
* say "NO" and not feel guilty
* BBQ on the grill!

Holy Sh!@!!! Too funny...but very true ladies.

Every girl should be able to:

1.) Most important: Dropkick an attacker
2.) Drive a stick
3.) Be the Ms. Fix-it around the house (and do it better than they do!)
4.) Build a fire (in the fireplace or on a deserted island)

Change a tire/jump a car is an absolute must!!! You never know...

I'm going to assemble them into one list! Love the responses so far!

This post reminded me of this poem...its a great poem!!

MAYA ANGELOU''S BEST POEM EVER

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE

enough money within her control to move out

and rent a place of her own even if she never wants

to or needs to...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE

something perfect to wear if the employer or date of her

dreams wants to see her in an hour...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE

a youth she''s content to leave behind....

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE

a past juicy enough that she''s looking forward to

retelling it in her old age..

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE

a set of screwdrivers, a cordless drill, and a black

lace bra...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE
one friend who always makes her laugh... and one who
lets her cry...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE

a good piece of furniture not previously owned by anyone

else in her family...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE

eight matching plates, wine glasses with stems, and a

recipe for a meal that will make her guests feel honored...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE

a feeling of control over her destiny...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...

how to fall in love without losing herself..

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...

HOW TO QUIT A JOB,

BREAK UP WITH A LOVER,

AND CONFRONT A FRIEND WITHOUT RUINING THE FRIENDSHIP...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...

when to try harder... and WHEN TO WALK AWAY...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...

that she can''t change the length of her calves,

the width of her hips, or the nature of her parents..

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...

that her childhood may not have been perfect...but its

over...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...

what she would and wouldn''t do for love or more...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...

how to live alone... even if she doesn''t like it...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...

whom she can trust,

whom she can''t,

and why she shouldn''t

take it personally...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...

where to go...

be it to her best friend''s kitchen table...

or a charming inn in the woods...

when her soul needs soothing.

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...

what she can and can''t accomplish in a day...

a month...and a year...

have a great suit availible for an interview
her resume updated at all times
Business cards pre-printed with her info on it for networking
should have her porfolio updated at all times
knows when she has had to much to drink
knows when its ok to ask for directions

1. Make enough money to live comfortably
2. Put air in her tires to the correct pressure

Things a woman should be able to do...She:

--should be comfortable to see a movie all by herself.
--should look at herself naked in a mirror and feel pretty darn good about it

Deco and Megs--I agree wholeheartedly with your posts.
And I love Trillionaire''s "say "NO" and not feel guilty"

I can''t change a tire, and I certainly don''t know how to drive a stick shift. I''ll learn how to change a tire when the "opportunity" arises. Don''t ever plan on learning to drive a stick shift, though.

1. Kill flying and crawling insects!

Great thread! Not sure there''s anything for me to add, but I just wanted to say that this thread rocks, and so does Maya Angelou.

Hmmm...how do you say...EVERYTHING
2.gif

I love being independent. I love it when my FI notices my headlight is out on my car and upon noticing it has been repaired asks "who fixed your headlight" and, despite knowing for many years now that I will try and do every single thing myself first and ask for help only if I am unable to perform the task, still gets a surprised look when I say "I did, of course!".

I suppose I would ultimately add that every woman should know when to ask for help and when to press on and try to complete the task herself. She should also know when to stand her ground, to trust her gut if she feels she is being taken advantavge of and to ALWAYS know that a second opinion in matters your are unfamiler with is never ever inappropriate.
