I spotted this on eBay and bought it as costume jewellery with the thought of using the beads for my ”dangle” projects.
However it is very much nicer in person. I don’t know if it’s Jade but it does have Amethyst beads and what I thought were brass beads. Turns out they are glass and are hand painted, very beautiful.
The question for the Jade experts is ... the focal carved bead also has a series of holes drilled into it. Is there a purpose or meaning behind these drilled holes? I’ve often noticed that pieces of carved Jade for jewellery C7EDE3EA-F08C-4815-80D1-D66153E3CD77.jpeg8CE7B96F-AF26-47C6-AC73-905DF28DF577.jpegAA25860C-C1BA-4709-AD9B-2AFEA0BC560A.jpeghave holes drilled as well as carved patterns and wonder why.
many thanks in advance.

Oftentimes carving is done on specimens that have non-ideal traits. So, for example, you will see a decorative hole, wave, or deeper part of design where a blemish was so the finished piece has a more perfect appearance. In some pieces, the carver will incorporate a flaw into a design. I have a carved Buddha of yellow Jade, and he has a tiny red spot right where his belly button would be.

There might be a more meaningful explanation, but I think most choices with carving are just to listen to the jade and make the piece you're working on as beautiful as you can.

Also I really like your new piece! I'm such a sucker for more smooth & creamy texture jades, especially nephrite. The enamel beads are so detailed and intricate. It's very pretty and retro looking.
