Let's play a game... rainbow gems.

Does anyone remrnber the one to remember the order of the planets ?

There is one?

Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune Pluto.
The space themed encyclopedias were always my favourite, I read those dozens of times when I was a kid.
And yes, Pluto is up there. It's in my old encyclopedias and you can't delete it from them, NASA!

Uhm, okay, back to the question at hand.

So that would make.... eeer... MVEMJSUNP? I... don't know how that's supposed to help you remember the order of the planets in the solar system. Seems too confusing for me.

I saw it on a quiz the other night but had never heard it befote
And now i can't remember
and Pluto is still a planet in my book too !

@AudreyC How cute is that purse charm! And your jadeite is sumptuous...

@Rfisher I love the glow of your profile ruby! Is the other ring a pad or spinel/tourmaline? The ring design is absolutely gorgeous!!

@Shiny Black Cat I've always really enjoyed the richness of London blue topaz... lovely earrings!

Yeah, I figured indigo was too close to purple and blue for each round... and I wanted to see everyone's pink pretties! Hmmm, let's see. What are some indigo gems? Tanzanite, of course, iolite, sodalite, to name a few.

On that note, PURPLE or INDIGO is next! :mrgreen2:

I specifically looked to see if you included Pluto, @Avondale! It was my favorite planet as a kid, because Mickey's dog shared the same name. Plus, I think relegating it to a "dwarf" planet is offensive. :D

I learnt "My Very Easy Method Just Speeds Up Naming Planets". It only works when you keep Pluto though...

Thank you @AudreyC I get it now and pulled out from deep in my brain a youth learned rainbow memory aid: ROYGBIV.

Indigo might be a problem, maybe it's fair we traded it in for Pink? :lol-2:

@prs and @Daisys and Diamonds, same here :lol-2:. My father, who was a Science and Math teacher, taught me to remember it by “Richard of York gained battles in vain”.

Sorry, no such thing as orange variscite, it doesn't come in orange but it comes in dirty browns and yellows.
There's lots of fakes and dyed stones out there called sea sediment jasper, imperial sea sediment jasper, etc
Yours looks like a composite dyed stone.

Not saying this to upset you, just love "my" Variscite.
here's some info on Variscite: https://www.gemsociety.org/article/variscite-jewelry-and-gemstone-information/

Is if possible that the green vein is variscite in host rock/Boulder? Agree variscite is not orange but it does come in green. Just looking at why the op may have been told it was variscite

yes, it was fun for me, but the seller from reputable crystal shop was convinced it was variscite.

To my eye doesn't look like that, that rought would be cut into cabs that have a middle green line. Just google ribbon variscite, it's a style.

The names Variscite and Jasper have been highjacked to sell stones that immitate certain looks (webbed matrix etc).
You are right, if it was fun it was worth it, we are doing this for fun, aren't we?
I'm just a bit nerdy about Turquoise and Variscite, don't mind me.

Anyway, forgive the interruption, please carry on.

@Rfisher I know this topic has been beat to death, but I wanted to mention... AGL is by far the strictest, IMO, in terms of pad grading. They are absolutely merciless when it comes to even the slightest perception of a brown modifier. I bet the GIA would certify that stone as a pad. But, really, at the end of the day... a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. It's beautiful, whatever you call it!

@AudreyC I'd love to own some pallasite peridot or moldavite.. or a space diamond! I remember reading a few years back that scientists discovered a planet they believe to be one giant diamond. Hold on... I have to find the article now! :mrgreen2:

@prs The glorious emerald! The milgrain set diamond hearts! The two-tone gold! That ring is a winner. I was thinking about setting my emerald with a gold basket and prongs. I was afraid it would give the appearance of there being more yellow in the green (when the stone actually leans blue). Did you experience that in person? Or perhaps it enhances the blue modifier? I would love it if that were the case, because I really prefer the look of a two-tone piece...

Up next: BLUE

Amy at DKJ told us she would suggest heart melee much more often in her designs if it were available, but hearts are very difficult to source.

I think a well-done gold surround and prongs do enhance green emerald and add a touch of sophistication to the setting. A yellow gold surround can similarly enhance red ruby.

Just as well red is next up in the rainbow. =)2 This ruby has a yellow gold bezel with similar effect.
