Let's play a game... rainbow gems.

Time to ressurrect this thread I think, with a specimen of corundum/sapphire that ticks either red or blue:

This was bought from a Chinese eBay seller, and I ended up paying around £53 in total, which seems like a good deal. The description said that it's from Madagascar, but this is incorrect, and I think the Luc Yen deposit in Vietnam is the most likely origin. It's fascinating how the impurities of chromium (the pink areas) and iron+titanium (the blue parts) changed dynamically as the crystals grew, and it's a lovely blend of colours.

That is so cool, @Nick_G! I've never seen a corundum specimen in that formation. It almost looks frosted (and edible). Lovely!! I'm going to mix the red and blue and call it purple, since that was next anyway.

PINK is up, then back to red!!

if no one posts soon it will be my rose quartz and Whitby jet necklace up next .....

Ooh red!
Here is my new unheated ruby from Tanzania. I haven’t set it yet, just playing around to see how it looks on various metals.

It is slightly more pink but it's under a bright light
and you cant have a rainbow without some black clouds first :lol-2:

Love me some pink and black, my friend! Really fun contrast... thank you for sharing!!

Tanzanian rubies are finally earning their due respect in the market... absolutely gorge!!

I think that colour is referred to as 'flame spinel' from what I've read. It's certainly an intriguing crystallographic quirk.

Mother nature is incredible!!

YELLOW is up!

Where did you get it/
@autumngems One of my regular jewellers sourced it at one of the recent gem show, I think. I don’t have the name of the supplier.

@Autumn in New England Glad you like it! I wanted one from Tanzania because I don’t have any rubies from there. My friend got one that was rather nice, and it put an idea in my head!

It is splendid and appeals to the scientist in me. When I was a kid I grew my own crystals so this evokes happy memories.

Wow, I have never heard of nor seen yellow spinel! Is it natural or synthetic? Lovely custom oval. Thanks for sharing!!

Look at that yummy cab! And I don't believe I've ever seen hexagon emeralds. How cool is that?

Show us your BLUE next, guys!

I dont know it 100%, i bought him as Spinel. It looks like Spinel from the inclusions and Color, must come from Burma. Complete Stone looks milky. Most Inclusions are negative Crystals and Rutile needles. Stone has very light greenish medium yellow Fluorescence and is not double refractive. Stone is like a fireball in hand. Is precision cut from australia Cutter but i dont know his name. I have no refractormeter, i will send this stone in the next weeks to an gemmological institue to check him. I have seen 2 yellow Spinels before, but its very very rare. I will let u know in the future if the stone is an Spinel or Garnet.

Edit: You explained, but I was tippy typing in excitement while you did
Whaaat?! I've never even seen one in real life! Where did you find it?

@Crimson Inken once told me that Tanzanian rubies were some of the finest she'd seen in recent days. Enjoy your new pretty!

@Saphir Do let us know the testing results. I'm invested now!

I'll take purple this round... lavender spinel.

PINK is up next, the we're back to red!

I remember the search for this lavender spinel, @Autumn in New England.
It turned out beautifully!

Re: Tanzanian ruby, yes, this one fluoresces nicely. I don’t have any non-Burmese rubies so this will be fun for me. It has just a bit of that purple tinge found in Burmese stones, and could pass for Burmese.

No pink so far so I am going to sneak in my jadeite that colour shifts and shows both pink and lavender.
