OK - I'm busted! But I just had to "lurk" until I found out that you were going to keep the ring :) Sounds like you got a wonderful deal, Dreamer - evidence that your knowledge, hard work, and willingness to take a risk paid off. I'm happy, because I got a price that I was satisfied with, and the pictures were pretty awful! As I told you before, I had been given a verbal estimate of $14000, so I'm happy to hear that it's even more valuable. But I was never in it to make a ton of money - just enough for my next purchase. You've been extremely nice to work with, and I appreciate that - sometimes e-bay is a gamble. I'll probably retire from this site now that I know that you're happy, and will get on with my life. My best to all you sparkly people :)

Good luck on your next project! The ring is beautiful and it has gone to a great home! (But don't feel bad because appraisals are usually inflated to some degree, as you probably know..and Dreamer knows that, too!)

Dreamer....it is just perfect! Couldn't have gone to a better home!!! :appl: (oh, and VS1, too! yay!)

Dreamer, it really looks perfect on you and I really love that you finally got your 3-stone which is what you have wanted for so long! I'm just so happy for you!!

Yes! Thanks for mentioning that DS. I meant to comment on that. The appraised value does not really tell us very much, since it is a guess about the stone's true characteristics when set; different guesses equals different values! In addition, an appraised value is utterly independent from the price one can realistically obtain on the secondary market. I mentioned that value mostly because it seemed very inflated to me on the appraisal!

jbasket and I have chatted offline :)) She is a seasoned buyer on the secondary market with a gorgeous collection of jewels she saved fro oblivion, and I am very happy to have worked with her in this case ::) If she is like me, and I think she is, it is always nice to know that one's beloved jeweles are finding their way to a good home.

You know how I feel about a good VS1, DS :halo: These are very clean stones, one more thing to love. I am itching to pull them from the mount and see what the color really is. Whatever it is, I am happy with it -- these stones are very mind clean for me on many levels.

Thanks Mrs S! :wavey: It's nice that so many of the people who were here when I first started spamming PS about my three-stone love are here to see its fruition at long last. I could have gotten there sooner, but I am very cheap :rodent: Better late than never.

Mara and TGal, you need to stop talking about size... it is giving my ring a complex ::) Don't you know you should never whip it out and compare sizes!?!? At least not in mixed company.

Yes, her name alone seems to imply a certain level of self-confidence 8)

I popped the stones from their mounts!

The center is 1.39ct, and the sides are 0.76 and 0.78ct. They are very well matched in color. The appraiser estimated H-J color and using EGL standards I think that is about right. They look very white face up! Clarity was estimated to be VS1 and that could be accurate still. The side stones are immaculate with no damage at all to the girdles. The center has two microscopic "marks", I hesitate to even call them chips, that had been hidden by prongs. Not sure how those would affect clarity.

Here are some photos. I have some thoughts but wonder if anyone has observations about the stones, their cut, and suitability for a three stone ring, now that you see them loose in the photos?

Cut: beautiful

Suitability for 3 stone: perfect!

Sorry, not wearing my most constructive criticism hat at the moment, but even if I were... i still think they look wonderful together, and will make the perfect 3-stone!

Do you have a profile shot?

A few more.

GemFever I did not take profiles! Will do it now.

Dreamer, I think they are gorgeous together! I'd probably send them for girdle rehab just to erase any tiny imperfections and get them as round as possible while eliminating any very thin areas. I think they can usually improve polish which would be great, too!

My thoughts are that I'm afraid to know what your thoughts are.

Set the suckers already.

Crowns and better image showing the outlines.

LOL, that is SO funny.

Because my *only* thought (being biased and loving my ring for a couple of weeks now), is that my stone does look bigger with the smaller sidestones, and that your near 1.4 carat doesn't shine as much with the bigger stones. However, you will lose out on finger coverage.

You can sell the sides and get the money for the setting that way. chaching!

OK don't kill me, but I think it would want a titch bigger than the smaller set.

Oh, this isn't easy, is it? :cheeky:

(although I'm getting to be a size ho, and keeping looking at the larger suite.)

:errrr: nooooo! The bigger ones are perfect!!!

What size are the little ones (mm)? Maybe something in between, but gosh, perfect finger coverage with the larger ones!

the sides aren't perfect matches to each other but one of them is a really good match to the center. however for a 3 stone with setting etc, i think that it's more than fine. TG's sides don't match either and I can tell...but i think most people would not notice and in 'regular wear' (aka it on your hand waving around), no one would notice.

i would go with the 3 bigger stones if you want bling blang finger coverage. the proportion of smaller sides might be visually pleasing but would not give you as much finger coverage. so which do you want more?

Seriously, you people are cray cray...

I am not after coverage per se. I have my Aurora for the horizonantal mega bling coverage. If I was simply after that same effect I could have used the 0.97ct and two .70s that I had! In this case I was after a larger diamond, and got it, and the sides were a bonus. I think that my center looks so much bigger with the small sides! Like, massive and round and wonderful. And in a three-stone with accents I find that it creates a nice look when you can see the finger on either side -- like the whole triumvirate is a larger stone ;))

Anyways, I wore the ring as it was for two weeks and felt a few things in that time. One was that it was a little bit too much bling and made me feel a little uncomfortable in some situations. Self-conscious. And the other was that it was a similar look to my Aurora -- yes they are very different, but not as different as anothe style of ring would be! I am after variety. I also thought the sides detracted from the large center, which was my whole goal (larger diamond). I also feel that for ME the difference in shapes from the center to sides would be an issue. Yes that is OCD, though I do not think it is overly so. The sides are more like cushions than rounds. And I do not want to recut them to change that. The sides are frankly divine examples of their type with really great optics. They should stay as they are, preserved examples of old cutting mastery.

The smaller sides are 4mm and are not diamonds, they are just for show! In person I love the proportions. A hit of sparkle but make the center look huge. Any bigger and it starts to detract again. I have 4.8mm stones I tried and did not like it as much. The 4mm sides look so *dainty*, in a good way, like ladies in waiting to the star.

What do you all think of pear sides with an OEC? That is something else I have been thinking about. FAT pears. Not sure the optics will compliment? I want accent stones.

When I met Demezla I had told her before that I was thinking about my sides and if they were close enough in outline for me. When I pulled the ring out and gave it to her she gasped and exclaimed at its beauty and told me I was insane! LOL! BUT you see things when you wear something all the time that you don't see when you look at first glance. I am detail oriented.

I know that the suite I have is many many people's dream suite. It is not mine. I wonder about breaking it up for that reason.

When I was asking people what their thoughts were I was going to say, "Oh, and TGal I know your thoughts: OOoh sparkley!"

Well true. And I also have to say, my additional thoughts are becoming, "oh gawd." :rodent:

I'm not going to project my "ways" on you, because of course "people vary." But putting together a ring and enjoying it shouldn't be this hard. As Mara says, nothing is permanent. Spend a bit of change, wear it and enjoy, and change again later. I'm sure I don't need to tell you this though, as it's not like you haven't changed it up a bit.

I think for you, hunting on ebay, buying, and selling for a profit is more fun than actually wearing a ring. At least it seems that way, and there's NOTHING wrong with that.

As for pear side stones, sure. Why not? ::)

I don't find anything hard about what I am doing, TGal. I am having fun. If people are not enjoying the photos and ideas, I don't have to share them of course.

I like the smaller stones with the big center, it's a nice look. Different from the original, but still very pretty. If you feel the sides take away from the center and you want a big center, then the smaller ones are a good solution. I wouldn't do pears, but it's just my personal taste. Are you going to look for antique-looking pears? Do those exist?

I was just throwing out ideas, becauser I think pears can be a good accent too. I prefer the round though! It is not traditional for the era, but it pleases my eye and makes the center look bigger!

Please keep posting pics and ideas. It's a fascinating process!

Dreamer, who said anything about people not enjoying it? Everyone wants to see you find the ring you want...I've been along for the ride, so I don't mean offense. But it IS a bummer for you to exclaim, "yes yes, these are it!" and then to find out, "nope, nope, it's not." It's not that people aren't having FUN, but people are excited to see you actually find something that WORKS. When you say the universe aligned (or something like that) for you to get this ring and now want to take it apart, sell stones, find different stones, there's nothing WRONG with that, but it's a let down in the sense that for the "viewer", we thought it was going to work for you.

Make sense?

I personally prefer the smaller sidestones. ::)

How about a 5 stone ring? :cheeky:

Or sell the suite of 4 for someone else to make a 5 stone. Or each as a set of studs. Dreamer is fast becoming PS's old cut stud supplier, lol.
