I''m pretty unsure where to start the process for searching for a coloured stone. I emailed a couple of PS vendors for help, Wink because he seems to pick awesome coloured stones, and JA because I like one of their settings the best, but I think I want to continue to look myself as well - to learn more about what I''m looking for if nothing else.

Where should I look? What should I look for in a garnet?

Addy, have you tried Richard M. at www.artcutgems.com? I have rhodolites from him and they''re a gorgeous royal purple colour.

Dan Stair at www.customgemstones.com has a beautiful umbalite which (someone please correct me if I''m wrong) I believe is a type of rhodolite. He has other garnets as well. Also try www.acstones.com . I just got a tanga garnet (also rhodolite) from them which is stunning.

Thanks for the websites! Are they any on those websites that you like?

I like the purplish one that Mary just linked, it's pretty, but for me I was hoping for something about that size, maybe larger, that shape, I like the cut, but I want something more red.

Just saw this on a website: Rhodolite and raspberry are red garnet with strong pink and/or purple hue.

So maybe I'm not looking for a rhodolite garnet but rather a red garnet. Some purple hue is fine, but nothing too purple. Pinkish is fine. Orange isn't so fine.

This colour!

I second Richard at artcutgems - I have a 4.37ct octagonal rhodolite from him that is gorgeous and changes colour from a rasperry to a claret to a blue colour - it''s very strange and very beautiful.

I''ll bring it with me when we meet and you can have a look and see if it''s what you are looking for.

Thanks, Pandora! Maybe that''ll help me know what to look for. I feel so lost right now and prices vary so much on garnets. I don''t want to needlessly spend more money than I need to, but I don''t want a crappy stone either.

Addy, Jeff White may have some more rough like the one you linked above. I was asking him about it a few weeks ago. His prices are very reasonable for that color garnet, and his cutting is awesome.

I''ll bring a few bits and pieces with me and some books and we''ll try and work out what you are looking for! Garnets are my favourite stones.
