Hi, I finally managed to convinced my hubby to buy be a decent diamond (something to brag about, but not enuff to send us broke)

Ideally, from reading about diamonds in internet, I thought that I would settle for about 0.6-.75 carat, at least a VS2, and colour G. The first 3 Cs seems easy to get, but getting a good cut is hard. I''ve been to a couple of jewellers, and they tried to educuate me, but I''m not quite sure if I can trust what they say.

So for about the price that I want, what exactly can I get? I''m willing to compromise on the size of the diamond, but Im not sure if I should compromise the colour and calarity, and i really dont can not tell if the cut is good. Its easy for the jeweller to say that its a belgian cut, but how do i know that? All I know of diamonds is that I know I want one, and no other info.

Thanks
J

Hi!

I know a good teacher (an authority in the jewelry business and journalism). Here is the one lesson about diamonds a jeweler should not give you (http://ruby-sapphire.com/da-naked-eye.htm). To see what this guy means and if you want a great diamond there is no better way to get a deal than brouse a few hundred loose stones. But this is a hard to get opportunity. After having had it, my guess is that you can compromise on anything: cut, color, clarity and carat weight but not on the "look" of the stone. How about a cushion cut, K-L, Si2 eye clean, 4ct? There are few ocasions to see one, but this is the whole point of owning a rare gem. See it a Diamondsbylauren. How about a 1.5ct fancy deep orange-pink or a 0.5 ct fancy vivid blue? See them at fancydiamonds.net. How about a dreamy price on a well cut stone from a traditional diamond source? look at what the diamond district of Tell Aviv has to offer at israel-diamonds.com. Any of these sources will allow you to return the gem under appropriate financial arangements, and I would do that! These are places where you can see all the cuts. In the end, the combination between shape of mounting, color, size and clarity of the gem will make the jewel. A light yellow, SI2 in a yellow 18K bezel will glow all day. Also look at "GoodoldGold" since they seem to have it all.
