Lost an ACA from my 5 stone ring...

Well, as stated, I lost one of the ACAs from my 5 stone. It was a 0.34 F. I now have 4 near identical stones but hesitate to make another ring. It was a right hand ring, and may even have just been a manufacturing issue, but now I feel like it would be foolish to repeat the same mistake. It also has kind of ruined the idea of a 5 stone for me.

What do y'all think about a DBTY necklace with 7 x 0.34 ACAs? The biggest picture I've found is of 0.2s (@RunningwithScissors ). Is there a reason why larger ones aren't common? I see this size commonly as a solitaire type necklace. I have a 32inch DBTY with 0.15 (or 0.18?) carat stones and I love the style.

Any other ideas of what to do with these stones? I don't want a bezel ring. I don't want diamond stud earrings. I am obviously open to buying more stones.

Thanks in advance.

Ouch for losing a stone!

How about channel setting the remaining 4 stones as a RHR?

If they were mine, I would set them in a by-pass bangle bracelet.

How about a bar pendant?

DK :))

Oh, I like a bar pendant! Or a bracelet! But I definitely need to replace the stone to get to an odd number. I don’t know why. Maybe a dbty bracelet! I’m on the computer a lot and don’t love a bangle because of the banging, but I do wear a super thin chain bracelet 24/7 so another could work. Thanks for the ideas!

What kind of setting are they currently in?

You should probably do a search around Pricescope. Many PSers with DBTY are unhappy that they flip all
the time. The diamonds dont usually stay facing forward. If you have a bracelet made you'll have to be sure
that the bezels are deep enough so the points are not sticking you in the wrist. These ARE pretty big stones
for a DBTY. This is why you dont see bigger stones in a DBTY.

Sorry you lost one (that stinks). I would probably do a 5 stone ring with bezels to prevent losing another one.
I get that you may be over 5 stone rings though.

Bezeled 5 stone

What about some kind of band with the diamonds bezeled like these

I'll echo @tyty333 said about the diamonds in a DBTY flipping - mine flips all the time but because the diamonds are small it's not particularly noticeable but I think it would bother me if I had larger diamonds but then felt they were mostly 'upside down'.

I finally found two of the threads where people are unhappy about the flipping and poking that you are referring to. It would most certainly drive me bonkers.

I’m leaning towards maybe a gypsy set bangle? Or grouping them in a line at the top of a bracelet.

I think I want to see the stones because they’re beautiful (not necklace). But I’m definitely against another five stone. They are too big to use in a theoretical future halo project (I have short hobbit fingers).

I’ll sit on this for a while before deciding. I’m so frustrated because I have other things on my list I’d much rather be spending my jewelry budget on than a new stone and reset. I’ve actually moved away from custom projects because the options are overwhelming. I’m looking more are branded and antique/vintage pieces.

Thank you for the ideas!

Thanks for posting the picture @HockeyMama ...I'm currently looking at turning my solitaire into a 3 stone. I like
the 3 prong look for the side stones but I'm rethinking that now.:(sad

I tortured myself on this setting and went back and forth. I initially wanted six prongs/crowns on each but someone said it might be too prongy and I backed out. I clearly regret this one. My three stone is a butterfly and has all the prongs and is way more secure. The three stone is partly why I don't want to bezel this one; I need them to look similar for my brain to be happy.

I feel like this is throwing the baby out with the bathwater? Maybe sit in the decision for a while.

That would very much be me. I literally told my husband the ring was "dead to me". I am going to get a new stone from Whiteflash and will then sit for a long while.

Did the stone fall out on the end or in the middle? Did you talk to David Klass about the loss or how he thinks it might have happened? I wouldn’t give up on the idea of a five stone yet either. We insure our jewelry and hope for the best, but wear it without fear. Prongs are important but so is support under the five stones. I would discuss a design with several people to get their thoughts before I gave up completely. Haste can make waste and the ring was beautiful!

Are you open to questions on this setting and how it looks now, or do you just wish to move on?

Sorry about the loss of the stone! That does suck!

It was one of the end stones. It's the same as the Tiffany setting but with ACAs (which is why I went custom). I haven't talked to him because I don't want him to feel bad. I've had it less than two years. I wear it maybe ten days a month? I don't wash/garden/workout with it.

I'm waiting to hear back from my insurance and I have no idea how that will work. The stone is about $700 so I'm not too worried about that. Hopefully I could get a credit for the metal when I reset?

I'm open to questions... and kind of fascinated!

Is the ring shank completely in round? From head on and side view?
Or does that one end prong look bent and that’s what happened like it got snagged and pulled away?

Well there you go. I guess I smashed my hand somewhere without hurting it but bending platinum????? I may be bionic and not know it. This tells me I should for sure not have a right hand ring remade if I did this. And my left hand is happy with my three stone ACA on my ring finger. I’ve considered a left pointer finger ring. Or I guess a bracelet?

Ouch. :(
The very first picture you posted also looks like it’s twisted so it’s got 3d distortion going on.
That rules out mfg defect though. Which I know you didn’t say and I’m not trying to say you were.
I can see where one would say mfg as in meaning the design decisions being made not being right for one’s lifestyle. And that’s ok.
I can’t do delicate for daily wear on right hand, either. :(

I have had this five stone ring - .40 carat stones for 2.00 total weight - from Memoire for over 20 years. I don’t do heavy work in it but do wear it day to day. It is a right hand ring so gets more abuse I assume than my left hand does. It looks like it rounds the finger more than your ring and is protected on the sides as well. Just saying all of this to say that you can still have a five stone ring but would probably need to modify the setting

Wowza! Good question @Rfisher! That is mangled!

I remember this ring and looking back at the cads the shank is 2.3 wide by 1.8, which is more substantial than most PS rings. Through I suppose rings can be much beefier if needed without sacrificing comfort … like 3 x 2. When I was asking about metal choices recently DK told me that if I’m really hard on my rings then 14k gold would be hardier than platinum. I would contact DK to see what they say. Send them all those pictures above. No to accuse but to gain information about how or whether this can be avoided with another setting if you went that route.

lol. And this is why I always take a few days to cool down before replying to any emails when I’m upset.

How wide and thick in your shank on this ring MGR?

@HockeyMama sorry to hear about the loss of your stone :(

I am one of those who unhappily has a DBTY bracelet with larger stones (0.2-0.4ct) and flipping/poking, so would warn against it unless your bezel is very deep to prevent the poking, but it wouldn’t stop the flipping. I now have a continuous DBTY (vintage Tiffany) of 22x 0.1cts and it’s much more comfortable, despite the stations flipping.

BUT in terms of ideas - what about a DBTY style two-station pair of earrings? Or, even better, a pair of studs with a convertible/attachable ear pendant so you can customise them?

That way, you don’t need to buy another stone! And no flipping/poking either!

These ones from the Tiffany website are 0.39ct TOTAL - yours would be much more substantial :cool2:

That was on my short list, with the "bar" prong on the side. I wanted more light on the stones so that's why I deviated. But that or a bezel would be the way to go for sure. I think for my right hand I'm going to get a bubble band or something just metal to be safe. Beautiful ring!

Yup, clearly my fault. From A to Z.

Hockey coaches (and I imagine all coaches) have a 24 hour rule with no communication allowed from angry parents! I think it should apply to all parts of life.

I read through your journey (well, all your journeys!) and that helped me decide against. Your new bracelet is gorgeous! I hope you find a way to reuse your other stones.

These earrings are beautiful but I am a VCA earring convert. I wear my sweet pave 24/7 and have a vintage WMOP WG pair on order! I'm not a fan of my giant detached lobes so prefer more coverage. Thanks for the idea! I actually have this pendant... in addition to my 32 inch DBTY necklace. I love the style so much.

Hehe I love the style too! I actually have a single station DBTY 0.39ct necklace that I find quite comfortable - but not sure whether multiple stations would be as comfy.

What’re the ctw of the diamonds in your 32 inch and how far apart are they? I can definitely see a 5 station DBTY necklace to round off the collection of necklaces!

My long necklace has 17 x 0.15 carat ACA's set two inches apart. I usually wear it doubled up so hadn't really planned on a short version.

I love, love, love the single DBTY as in your photo. It has long been on my wish list to have one. I think I want a 0.74 ct (birth year) and have been watching the Whiteflash inventory for one in F (all my stones). My hesitation has been fixed or not, to prevent the dreaded flipping, and I have settled on fixed recently. I have a miki sliding single pearl pendant and the clasp always moves to the front. Same with my reset princess ER pendant on a bale. I want to try a fixed pendant next.

Your collection is fantastic! So well curated across diamonds, branded pieces and pearls! I appreciate how generous you are with us, sharing your stories! Thank you!

It actually looks like you are at risk of loosing the opposite side stone as well. See how it has popped out of the end notch on the outside prong?

I got his setting (a year ago) because when I said I planned on wearing my 5-stone every day, they said this setting was very secure for daily wear.
