FMIL suggested that perhaps the idea of including magnets with our STDs was obsolete because they won''t stick to new refrigerators. She is generally a wonderful and sensible person but I''m a bit lost on this. Is it likely that a large % of our 150 invitees will have non-magnetic refrigerators? We don''t have a new fridge, so I have no idea what she means... Any thoughts?

i heard that magnets are so not recyclable. not sure about the non-magnetic fridge thing.

Here''s what I found:

Will my magnet collection work on a stainless steel refrigerator?
No. Although some stainless steel grades are magnetic, the stainless steel type used for appliances is not. But you wouldn''t want to cover up the beauty of the stainless with magnets anyhow!!

I just ordered magnetic STD''s... how many of you ladies on here have non-magnetic refrigerators? Gotta ask now that I realize it could be an issue.

Also aluminum isn''t magnetic either.

BUT... whether you send a card or a magnet either way it will stick to the fridge or sit on their counter.

I have a stainless front on my frig, but there is a little space on the sides that I stick magnets to. I have a couple magnets stuck on our fireplace too. I wouldn''t worry about them not being able to put it on the frig - they''ll find a place like a file cabinet if they want to hang on to it.

I dont know what my fridge is made of (it is white and probably a few years old) but magnets stick to it if that helps =)

We have a stainless steel front, and magnets only stick to the side... However, a flat magnet is going to end up the same place as a card stock announcement, for those that don''t have magnetic fridges. I say go ahead with the magnet if you like that. I don''t think that it would make that big of a difference.

FYI... I have all of my friends announcements in my office at work.

We have a stainless steel fridge that we can''t use magnets on. True stainless steel won''t hold a magnet, but there are also faux stainless steel fridges that hold magnets. Generally, its the fancy schmancy sub zero fridges that don''t take magnets.

Magnets still stick to most office cubbies...and other kitchen appliances...i.e. dishwashers, etc. I think magnetic STD''s aren''t totally out of date yet. We stilll have a magnetic white fridge and even while we plan to buy a new one, we don''t plan on buying stainless! (Stainless to us is the equivalent of the avocado fridge well known in the 70''s.) Metal is metal...magnets aren''t going anywhere, imo.

thanks -- i don''t want to be totally behind-the-times here. my own fridge takes magnets and i find it helpful when i get those rather than business cards from folks like plumbers, etc, but what do i know.

monarch, i love your valentine avatar!

I have a 1 year old pretty nice fridge and magnets stick to it? Not sure if they aren''t supposed to, but ther''re on there!

this is sort of random, but are there a lot of wealthy people on your list? outside of stainless, people with custom kitchens often have features like wood-paneled appliances that match the cabinets - and don''t take magnets. that and i''ve just noticed that lots of the wealthier peolple i know don''t litter their fridges with magnets, period! a strange observation, i suppose...

My parents have the new stainless fridge that''s non magnetic. HOWEVER the sides of it are....

Not to jack your thread.... but do any of you truly put the magnets you recieve on YOUR fridge??? Is it just me who doesn''t? I like a clean fridge not junked up with magnets, pictures, etc.

well, we''ve gone with the magnets anyway, partly because the potential for the removable glue dots to double as faux boogers has FI totally hooked on the idea (we''re using the dots to stick them on the STD postcards).

I love getting magnets and putting stuff on the fridge. The first thing I bought for the new house was a set of cute leather magnets in the shape of animals so we''d have a place to hang stuff before we unpacked. The fridge is one of the few places where I can hang things that is safe from the cat (she eats paper). It is also the best way for me to not lose information, since I end up hiding cards and papers in random drawers if they don''t go on the fridge, and have trouble finding them later. On my fridge I have a plastic bag storage container hanging on a magnetic hook, kitty sitter emergency info, cards, wedding/baby announcements, pictures, our favorite take-out menus etc. I think having stuff on the fridge makes it look like someone lives in the house. I don''t love stuff lying all over the house, but it would be weird not to have anything on the fridge! I always think it is sad when I go into people''s really expensive houses and it looks like no one lives there because there''s nothing personal visible in the house.

Our cats sound like twins. FI's cousin's wedding on NYE was the first one we had received a magnet STD notice to, and it was great. It was the only thing on our fridge and it reminded me every time I saw it that I needed to a) buy an engagement or shower gift b) reserve a hotel c) get my wardrobe in order... etc. I really liked it-- plus the cat couldn't get to it, so I didn't have to stash it somewhere strange (she got a hold of the invitation though... it didn't survive).

We have a Stainless steel fridge and cannot put magnets on the ss part but the sides allow for it.
Even if I can''t put stuff on the fridge, I''ll find someplace for it. I''m always more willing to throw out a piece of paper than a magnet. I don''t think they are "out of date" I think you will be just fine!

Personally, I love magnets! I think it''s a great idea.
