Hello,

I''m eloping and I was wondering if I could get my makeup done at the Mac counter in a department store before my wedding. I''ve never had my makeup done there before, but I want my makeup to look nice for pictures and it looks like hiring a private artist is going to be like $200. Since we are "just" eloping I really can''t justify that cost.

Anyway, do people do this? I feel like I may have seen this on a bride show before.... Oh and I realize you are expected to buy the products, but do you also tip the artist too?

We did for my cousin''s wedding. There was the bride and about 6 bridesmaid and we went to Dillards in Atlanta and they did our makeup. They only required that we purchase an item.

I had my trial there and it looked wonderful. You buy $50 worth of products and the application is free. I did not tip at the trial, but this is a good question. I think I should tip her on the day of.

If you go to a MAC counter at a Nordstrom, I believe it''s $20 to reserve a slot...and then that amount counts towards whatever you purchase. I believe they just operate under the customary rule of buying 2 products...but I don''t think there is a set amount you absolutely must buy.

Are you dead set on getting your makeup done by MAC? I wear a lot of MAC and I have gotten my face done for special events but some of the artists tend to give a more ''dramatic'' party type look.

If you''re open, I highly suggest Prescriptives or Bobbi Brown. I''ve gotten my makeup done by a ton of counters: MAC, Stila, Clinique, Bobbi Brown, Prescriptives and BB and Prescriptives looks were the most ''natural beauty'' ones I''d gotten done.

according to bridal guide, you should tip 15-20% for a makeup artist. as for getting your makeup done at a counter, it might be a good idea to hover around and see them do someone else''s before relying on that option for your wedding face, but if you''re confident that you''ll like the results, i say go for it! i lucked up on this one--my friend is a licensed cosmetologist and is doing hair and makeup for free.

I went to MAC at Nordstroms once and it was the same deal - $50 purchase, you get an application. I''ve gotten my makeup done there several times and it''s always dramatic for NYE and things like that. I brought in a picture and she did it exactly like the picture and I looked very bridal...not too overdone at all.

Oh so you can make an appointment?

I think next time I am in Nordstrom, I''ll check out what the different counters are doing.

I guess I am just thinking MAC because it seems to be the trendy place to go. I don''t want a dramatic look, but I also don''t want to look like I am completely not wearing any makeup either...

Hmmm... good idea about bringing a picture. Never thought of that. I need to start looking because I really don''t know what I want yet, or what would look good on me.

Mia - definitely bring in a couple of pics you like and when you go check out the different counters, show them or compare your pics to their products.

I just called my local Nordstrom and they confirmed that on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday the price is a flat $50 to reserve a spot....but you do get that $50 placed towards whatever you purchase. $50 could get you a blush, lip liner and lipstick or a similar combo.

MAC is trendy, indeed, I love their stuff....but I''ve been wearing it since I was 15 years old and in California, the makeup people tend to be super eccentric which is fantastic but their personal art/view of style tends to come out in what they do on your face.

Again, definitely check out Prescriptives or Bobbi Brown. MAC tends to lay foundation on a little thick whereas the other brands are all about evening skintone, brightening and camoflauging(sp) skin imperfections.

Whatever you do, be vocal about exactly what you want. For example, I never, ever let any artist do a heavy eye and dark lip on me. I don''t like bright lips or the typical dramatic eye and I am not afraid to say so. A counter F-ed up on me once and sent me home crying with dark grey eyes and a bright melon lip with $100 in purchases which I later returned. The clearer you are about what you want and don''t want, the better.

Hee hee...you guys should totally try out taaz.com. SDL posted it a few days ago, and it''s awesome.

I would take pics to MAC and tell them what you want. And then take pics of that, and show it to the person who will be doing your makeup before the wedding.

Good luck!

It was $40 for me at the actual MAC store.

Yeah it used to be $40 for me too and then they bumped it up to $50 in the last year or so here.

I would second the BB suggestion. They do very nice natural but still made up looks. You don''t want to be all vamp''d up on your wedding day. Unless that''s the look you''re going for.
