Can anyone give me a preview of what''s involved when obtaining the marriage license. I''ve been told i need to get it 30 days before our wedding. Does anyone have to come with us, what will we need? thanks! trying to plan ahead since our wedding is out of state from where we live..

Where are you getting married Janine?

Here in California, you have 3 months (I think) to get married from when you get your license. All you need is a drivers license and some money to pay for it.

There are also two types of licenses...but the names escape me at the moment. One is where your license is public record and you can get married anywhere in the state. The other is private, but you must get married in the county where you applied for it.

New Jersey, and we have to get it within 30 days of the wedding. i think i may''ve found out i need a witness over 18, so i guess that won''t be too hard to pull together. thanks!

TGal- You don''t have to bring a witness in CA right? FI and I are scheduled to get ours next week when I go out to CA, but we don''t know anyone else in the city!

So funny that you just posted this, as we just called today to find out what we needed for our marriage license!
Here is the info we got for MA: You can get it anywhere in the state (you don''t have to get it in the town or city where you are actually typing the knot). Also, make sure you go to the county office at least 3 days before your wedding, because it may take them a few days to process it. For example, we are getting married on a Saturday and planning to go apply for the license on Monday. Lastly, they told us that physical exams and blood tests are a thing of the past - just bring your license and $$!

You might want to give a call over to the county office where you are getting married - they were able to provide us with a lot of helpful info.

Neatfreak, nope, you don''t need to bring a witness to get your marriage license.

Yup, correct! Just you and your man in the line with the rest of the lovebirds! It''s actually quite fun to people watch...some people don''t look as happy as they should!

Thanks Snlee and TGal! The people watching certainly seems up my alley!

Funny timing as I just got off the phone with the local county office where we''re getting married. They''re sending me our paperwork. It really depends on which state you''re marrying in with regards to how long the license is valid once they issue it. You just have to call your local County Clerk''s office and they can tell you, or look online.

You should call and ask. We got the waiting period waived since we got married out of state. Obviously you need your IDs and BCs. Another strange thing was the Officiant''s info (phone, address, title). Besides that it was easy and took maybe 15 mins. Some states require a blood test.
