I think my boyfriend has finally tired of hearing me complain about his mattress. My back aches when I wake up (it actually crackles when I roll out of bed in the mornings), and even though he''s been religious about rotating, his side of the bed is so sloped and scrunched, it looks like an accordian on the side when you take the sheets off (he''s 6''3" and 230 lbs, so a big guy). It''s some sort of Serta that he got "on sale" for about $1000 4-5 years ago. Does anyone have recommendations for a good quality mattress that won''t poop out after a few years from his weight? As close to $2000 as possible would be good, but up to $3000 if necessary (for a king/cal king...always forget what the difference is). Thanks!

I cannot recommend the ''Tempur'' type mattresses enough! www.tempur.co.uk

I don''t have the actual Tempur, but a slightly cheaper one that feels pretty much the same. I would buy the real thing next time though. It was definitely the best purchase we have made for the house.

Since we got it, my back has been so much better (I''ve had major surgery etc on it) - I hate most hotels now as I''m so used to my super-comfy bed. I discovered Memory Foam (what Tempur is) when I was in the spinal unit of the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital - all the beds were made with it - after 5 days I was asking the nurses where I could buy one!

In the UK, the King Size 25cm thick is a bit under $3k. If you have a bad back you can get sales tax off here if you have a letter from your GP - Sales Tax in the UK is 17.5%, so that was a serious bonus plus it comes with a 15 year guarantee! I can''t find the same info on the USA site from here.

They also do a range of cushions, pillows etc.

It''s also hypo-allergenic and comes with a removable cover that it anti-dust mite.

Basically I LOVE my mattress!

We have a memory foam mattress as well.

ITA- with your budget I would definitely go with the Tempurpedic. MIL got us the Celebrity as a gift and it is the BEST! We only have the queen size, but it is plenty big for us

Wow, all these Tempurpedic recommendations! I slept at a friend''s house who had one, and I remember dying of heat. Is this a common problem? Or could it have just been their particular guest bed/bedding (didn''t seem like a heavy comforter, but then again, down rarely feels heavy...)?

I''m someone who is always cold, and FI is totally opposite and he doesn''t seem to find it a problem.

Tempur all the way.this type of mattress takes a bit time to get used to.No you don''t get hot on it.We have had ours for well over 6 years and it feels like it felt when it was new no sagging no weight shifting felt.
I believe they have different qualities so try them all first.Choose the best you can afford.Don''t forget to get their pillows as well.Perfect match..

I do notice that the tempur stuff is a little more insulative than regular mattresses, but my body got accustomed to it quickly. I can''t stand the Tempurpedic pillows though...they are too hot and make my neck hurt

HERE IS A THREAD that I started a while back. There are a couple of great links towards the bottom, including a website that you can cross-reference from. (Like if each company has their own "name" for the same mattress.)

Oh, and we went with US MATRESS and got the Thistle Meadow Plush (kind) for around $1500. Then, due to advice from another website, we bought a latex topper which was in the $150 range. So, we got the great support of an innerspring mattress because we are both bigger people. Then, for the comfort, softness and not getting overheated (like memory foam), we got the latex topper. It''s wonderful. My first couple nights were rough because I had been sleeping in a crater for so long, but after that, it''s bliss!

Good Luck! Remember, you can find just about any mattress online for cheaper than a store.

Love in Bloom:re : "Tempurpedic pillows though...they are too hot and make my neck hurt "
They make different sizes of pillows you need to pick the one that suits your neck contour.
I adore mine , my DH did not like his until we went back to the shop and he got a different one.Now he can''t leave anywhere without taking his pillow.the pillow travels with him.

We have a Sterns and Foster (Kedleston). We both have back problems. If either of us is locked up, one night in this bed and we feel better the next morning. Key was to be SHAMELESS in the mattress stores. Mattress salesman are the WORST, think of every shady undrehanded trick in the book, they''ll pull it. You have to completely ignore them and just do your thing. Try out the mattresses you are interested in, FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME. We spent at least 20 minute stretches on the mattresses we were considering... and several times on each mattress before we picked the one. Your body will tell you, but it takes it time to figure out what to tell you so it NEEDS 20 minutes on each bed.

Yes Gypsy is absolutely correct about trying the bed for as long as you need.Take your h in with you and try it together also.We had no pressure and spent lots of time ...It helps..

I agree. We have had ours a year, maybe two, can''t remember. Wouldn''t do without it ever again! Pillows too!!

We have a W Hotel mattress, that''s the most comfortable bed I''ve ever slept on. I know, you wouldn''t think a hotel bed would be more comfortable than anything, but it''s like a little square of heaven in the bedroom.

I started on a matress quest late last summer and the choices were overwhelming! I am determined to do it this summer, but I am really undecided about memory foam or latex. Then, do other makers of the memory foam make as good (or better) quality than Tempurpedic??? I''ve read that Tempurpedic is popular because they do so much advertising! But now many mattress companies are making matresses with memory foam. I normally use Consumer Reports to narrow things down, but they don''t rate matresses because the manufacturers sell matteresses under different names to different stores. So it is hard to compare them. Like diamonds, I don''t have to have the "D IF" of mattresses! But I want a beautiful ideal cut quality and priced at G-H VS rates!

If it helps you ?
When we got our tempur they had practically came on the market ,so we read no advertising on it.Went strictly by the way it felt when (I and we ) tried few.I always came back to exact same one because it felt the best. After few years of sleeping on it we have only positive things to say.It feels good as it did when we bought it.It was expensive then and 20 years warranty came with it.It was worth it...

We had the same problem when we tried the Tempurpedic brand - with no heavy bedding because we both are very hot natured. So, after a ton of research we went latex and got a cool-max matress pad to go over the latex mattress. Had it for four years now and it is just wonderful, even in the southern humidity and sweltering heat of summer.

Sterns and Foster all the way. Ours is 10 years old and just like new. It was pricey- more so now likely. Never regretted spending the money though. We have a king, no pillow top and the second firmest they sold at the time.

I have the Westin (or Sheraton) version (same company) and I love, love, love it. I also loved the W one when I stayed there. You can order it from Nordstrom''s which may make returning easier.

Before we got this we bought one from Macy''s. Their customer service was EXCELLENT. we didn''t keep that one because it was way too firm. Even though we were well past the return timeframe they were awesome about taking it back. I would definitely buy from them again.

When we had the firm mattress I tried the memory foam top, but died from the heat. I also didn''t care for the feeling of it molding to me. I guess I''m just an old school kinda girl LOL.

Tempurpedic all the way!! But there is a catch. Those who say that it is hot are correct. It can create more heat than some people can bear. I couldn''t afford the actual one, so I bought a 4 inch memory foam topper that has even more dense memory foam than a tempurpedic. I actually bought the pillow first and I have to say that the combo of memory foam pillow with a regular mattress will kill your neck. You can''t have one without the other. If you sink into your pillow, but not your mattress, you will be at an odd angle and it will hurt.

However, if you sink equally with both, it can be heaven. Again, it''s important to get the pillow that fits your neck contour.

I was working for the Sheraton when Starwood bought the chain and introduced the "Heavenly Bed" at the "W" and some Westin''s. It is also an extremely comfortable bed, but pricey. Find a friend who works for them because employee''s get a discount.

Sheraton introduced the "Sweet Dreams" bed. Reallllyyyyyy, finally the hotel industry realized that people pay $200 on average to sleep, so you should focus on the comfort of the bed...DUH! Those beds are still better than the average bed. Again, they are owned by the same company, but brand the chains separately, and without a doubt the "Heavenly " bed is better.

Most people spend at least 1/3 of their life on a mattress, some lucky ones even more

, so it worth a splurge.

I make up for the heat of a dense memory foam by cranking up the a/c.

It can be pricy, but worth the tradeoff, because whenever I travel, I just can''t wait to get back home to my own bed.

We struggled to find the right mattress for a long time -- and we purchased the Select Comfort mattress.

I will never own anything else as I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my mattress. After 6 years, we still love it and have never had any problems... and it''s real tough getting out of bed since it''s so comfy!

Also...I highly recommend Sferra Bros sheets too!
