Hawaii's Kilauea volcano has been fiercely erupting for well over a month. Now, residents are finding little green gems that have fallen out of the sky during Kilauea's eruption.

The green gems are olivine crystals, a common mineral found in Hawaii's lava. At jewelry quality, the mineral is called peridot. As the volcano erupts, it blasts apart molten lava, allowing for green olivine minerals to be separated from the rest of the melt and fall as tiny gemstones.

Oops! I didn’t see this and posted a different link on rocky talky!

I have relatives that live on Oahu. I think I'll call them and suggest they take an island hopper and pick up a few!

OK - but they are def. heated...

 Well, you're right about that!! I'm not sure if this type of "heating" counts though;-)

Send them to a lab............. ; )

Quite sure we will see them in Tucson next Year...

A bit like Hauyne in Eifel district in Germany and there are large „bombs“ full of peridot too...

My gem loving friend actually found these peridots on her vacation to Hawaii in February. She didn’t know what they were. I said they were probably peridots because Hawaii is a volcanic hot spot and peridot often shoots out along with the pyroclastics. I am so jealous!!!!=) I think this is the green with envy smiley.

My friend just linked this article to me.
