Hi, I am working on an antique-inspired piece with David Klass, and he is offering either OEC or single cut melee. Can people please post examples of completed projects that contain either of these types of melee so I can decide which will be best for my project? I have included a picture of the inspiration ring, which I know uses rose cut melee. I am not sure if rose cut melee is an option, but please let me know if you think I should insist! Thank you in advance! :)

Is this for your wonky sapphire that I ADORE?!

I think rose cut melee would be gorgeous. I have seen it on rings from CVB, and a ring from David Klass a long time ago. This would be my first pick

I have a single cut antique halo ring - I have to say, I don't know if I'd pick single cuts again. Something about them I don't care for aesthetically - or maybe I think they'd look better with step cuts. What's nice about them is that they give off broader flashes and are more subdued sparkle - teeny tiny OEC melee won't show facets off and in my experience (I have a brooch / necklace conversion piece with OECs) have more fire

This is entirely personal preference and I have seen many PSers recommend single cut melee for antique styled jewelry - either way for an antique-inspired piece i don't think you can go wrong

What's the price difference?

I have both.

I prefer single cuts personally, even though I have a ring with baby oec stones cut by Yoram.

No price difference. This is not for the wonky sapphire - that guy is second in line since I haven't quite decided what to do with him. Mr. Opalescent is up first.

Ahhh amazing! Going to be an amazing design for that stone - love it

I also have both. For pave melee, definitely single cuts. My halo with little OECs are larger than the single cuts.

My newest ring has single cuts.

Then this one has little OECs by Yoram but much larger than the ones above.

Large melee = I prefer OECs
Small melee = I prefer single cuts

The reason is that when it is extremely tiny, the single cuts give better flash and sparkle since there's fewer facets so I can actually "see" them. It would end up being to small to see if the tiny ones are OEC cut.

I have single cuts on an antique wedding band, OEC as the halo stones (chunky larger halo) for a cluster type antique ring.

What @chrono says is spot on. I was told that if you’re going smaller than 2.5 or so mm, go with single cuts because they will throw off chunkier flashes. OECs at that size will have tinier flashes.
