Mixing lab and natural diamonds

igi offers mass scanning of melee.
GIA does also.
Interestingly LGD lots are scanned to make sure they are not contaminated(their words) by mined happens a lot.

Another great resource! Thank you, Karl!

On a related note, AIGS is offering something similar for colored stones. They are offering mass screening for colored stone melee:

It’s wild how 4ct diamonds have become normalized.

Hi David, can you please also do this test - hard to know which you have - but on diamonds 405nm produces stronger blue fluorescence.
Test on US dollar bill security features:
  • 395nm: brighter reaction
  • 405nm: weaker reaction

I didn't have a single- on a $50 I got a strong reaction, on $100 a milder reaction....
But it's not really relevant to the point of the percentage of natural diamond Melee fluoresce.
I have checked many times over the years- having produced many rings. If I saw 50% fl, I'd have been concerned.
From my perspective, the lack of fluorescent diamonds isn't really conclusive of anything.
At this point, I assume any melee is lab, if it's colorless, and not fluorescent.
Oddly enough, brown ( like the brown in natural diamonds) is somehow non existent in lab diamonds.
So if you see brown melee, it's real:)

About the lab vs natural debate:
"Are you shopping for Natural or Lab diamonds?" seems a natural question to ask a potential client when we get a call asking about buying a diamond.
I'm finding that the majority of callers nowadays are looking for lab.
I think it's presumptuous to "steer" someone one way or the other.
I also think it's crucial to be open and honest.
If a client tells me the main reason they want a natural over a lab is for investment or re-sale purposes, I feel bound to give them my experience on how diamonds are not a good financial investment.
When a client says, I understand the financial implications, and I want natural that's their prerogative.
But nothing Rappaport or anyone can do to stop the market forces that exist.
his recent "adjustment" of the list is like taking a teaspoon out of a bathtub full of water. He's been ignoring the actual market for years.
He seems to be virulently anti lab diamond and I believe it's affected the list.

I have a 3ct natural diamond that I am planning on setting in a double halo of pink and yellow diamonds. I knew it was going to be expensive, but I just got the quote and I am in shock. I had no idea that natural light pink melee was so insanely expensive. The setting alone will be substantially more expensive than the cost of my center stone. I haven’t quite warmed up to lab grown diamonds yet. It seems my only options are to kill the project, go all lab for the setting, or just go lab for the pink diamonds. Which brings me to my question; are you guys mixing lab and natural diamonds? Would you do a lab grown setting for a natural stone? Have people been doing this? I can’t seem to warm up to the idea and I’m wondering if it’s just me and if it’s something that I’m going to have to just get over.

As far as warming up to the idea of lab-grown diamonds, if you saw the 2.13 carat D color, GIA-graded excellent polish and symmetry, AGS triple-zero round diamond I just got for under $1200
as a replacement for my natural 1.5 carat G colored, GIA-graded very good polish and symmetry that cost $12,000, you’d feel mighty warm mighty quickly!

This thread is months old. While I typically appreciate everyone’s feedback, your relentless over the top lab diamond posts are getting quite out of hand. I don’t care to debate with you.
