I have to go there for a few days. Any hotel and other recommendations? Thanks!

I don''t live there, but go every year. I have always stayed at the Days Inn on Rene Levesque. It''s a bit further outside the center of Montreal, but it doesn''t take long to get anywhere. It''s a nice hotel and affordable.

PLus, I love Chez Cora for breakfast, or the Paris Cafe for tea and pasteries.

Thanks! Have a good trip this year.

Mrs. Z and I like the Holiday Inn in the Chinese Quarter. It''s a little more than the place we used to stay (nearby on Rene Levesque) but it''s quite a bit nicer. We''re Chinese, so we like to be in this area near Chinese restaurants.

Le Saint Sulpice in old town, right behind Notre Dame. It's all-suite and very comfortable. Skip the packages that include food unless it's free, the breakfast/restraunt isn't spectacular.

Hi Harriet,

Well I''m from Montreal, so it depends a lot on where you want to be in the city.

Queen Elizabeth (if you want to be more downtown and within walking distance of the heart of the city), is probably the very best bet. It''s a street away from everything, and quite luxurious.

Hotel Le St. James (this is by far the nicest hotel in the city, my guy and I have stayed there a few times just for a mini get away. It''s only drawback is that it''s situated in the old port, which is lovely, but you''ll have to get a cab, or transportation to downtown if you want to see the sights.) The old port is lovely, but if you are in town for a few days, and want to visit a lot of things, then it might not be the most convienent place. But historical building and just lovely.

The Omni (this one is a little bit furthur from the center of the city then the Queen Elizabeth.) I''ve had friends stay here and they say it is lovely, but for the price range and location, I prefer the Queen Elizabeth over the Omni.

As for recommendations. If you like suishi I HAVE to recommend my FBIL''s resturant (I''m not crazy about him but the food is incredible.) Mikado''s on St Denis. For french cuisine, there''s Guy and Dodo (in the cours mount royal) and the Parchemin are really good.

Sights (my favorites anywhy) are the Oratoire St. Joseph and the biodome. There''s also nothing like dining on the terraces on cresecent street.

If you don''t stay at the Hotel St. James, I do recommend carving out a night for the old port, you can have dinner on the terrace on one of the cobblestone roads, which is very romantic.

Have fun!

I second the fairmount (Queen Elizabeth) reccomendation... it''s lovely.

As far as stuff to see the botanical gardens and bio dome are neat. There is also the basilic notre dame and it is very pretty inside and it''s in viex montreal (old part of montreal).

Have a great time!

Rebecca

Ally- I have eaten there- boy is it excellent!

I also like Oishi Sushi in the Plateau area... can''t think of the name of the street it''s on at the moment.

If you like W Hotels (I LOVE them) there''s one in Montreal that''s very boutique-y. Have a look at www.whotels.com I''d guess.

In terms of food, of course you have to try to local bagels, which are completely unlike the cr*p they call bagels everywhere else. Also, ''smoked meat'' sandwiches at one of the delis. I''m not a meat eater, but I still long for these from the days when I was.

The old city around the harbour is very pretty and they have a great museum of contemporary art.

Hi Allycat,
I have to be near the American embassy. Do you know where that is?

Hey zdrastvootya!!

If you do go, you MUST order NU, when they come with the order form write it down. It''s their special role which isn''t on the menu. It''s their specialty item reserved for their celebrity clientele (it''s the roll Celine Dion orders) She''s ordered a couple of times from the resturant. Really one of the best rolls in the resturant, and I personally think they should add it onto the menu.

Also amazing is the Don Juan and scorpian. That''s what I get when I go there. Nu, Don Juan, scorpian.

Harriet: I believe you mean the consulate in Montreal? The embassy is in Ottawa. It''s on Alexandre street, and maybe about 10 minute (or less walk) from the Queen Elizabeth Hotel. I think that would be your best bet if you want to be within walking distance of the consulate.

I second the Fairmont, Queen Elizabeth. I stayed there for business a few years ago and it''s GORGEOUS.

Not as good as Toronto, but we went to a seafood restaurant on the south side of where the restaurants are and had a pretty good 2 lobster deal.

The chinese area is smaller than Toronto, and I sense people aren''t as familiar with real chinese cuisine, dimsum, etc.

Ally, is there a chance that they won''t know (or pretend they don''t know) what I''m talking about, when I order this "Nu"? I think they''ll know I''m not Celine Dion. Should I wear dark glasses and pretend I''m a celebrity in disguise???!!! ;)

Hmm ... maybe I should go to Toronto instead.
