Help identifying these please?

1). The blue stone—Aqua or topaz? I know the stone has a large window but it is “glowy” nonetheless. More glow than scintillation. Not sure what it is. This one was also from my grandma’s things given to me and I will probably want to reset it but find a setting (probably sterling) that also allows me to use the side diamonds but is more updated and allows me to remember her. Ideas? There are four side diamonds on both sides. Any settings? Stuller?

2). Mad cool opal type earrings—but they have a wierd 3-D look with the fuzzy stuff inside. There are staying as earrings in current settings as I believe them to be 14kt and they are pretty substantial. Any ideas what they are? Never saw anything like it. Any opal nerds know? The word is that they are from New Zealand.

I want to set at least one of the stones (the blue or purple from my other thread) in a ring to remember her, but am not even sure what they are. I think I will eventually do both but need to choose one. I am partial to the blue despite the window but could ise some setting ideas. A closed back setting maybe?

The first one looks like blue tourmaline to me. It's more like the color blue topaz would have, but since blue topaz is irradiated and fades over time, if it's from your grandma and hasn't faded color, my bet is blue tourmaline. It's lovely set as-is and fits you, so I personally wouldn't spend money resetting it.

The earrings look more mother-of-pearl to me than opal, but I'm not a big opal person and will leave it up to others to give their input.

Thank you so much! I hadn’t considered blue tormaline. I do live the glow. The blue ring is too big for the finger I would wear it on; however perhaps I could just get it resized and cleaned up. I am not hugely in love with the setting—I like the side diamonds, but it is so light and there is a wierd fourth side diamond set in the channel on each side—but maybe a good clean would help me. I do like the stone but my guess is with the cut it is not worth much which is why I was thinking silver. By Isaiah, did you mean irridated?

Also—any thoughts on my purple stone/ring? It loos a bit like costume jewelry to me but my mom said she thought it was real. It is true my grandma almost never bought costume jewelry. This I do hate the setting and would reset for sure if it turned out to be worth setting.

Yes, I meant irradiated. I'm typing on my phone, so things like this happens. I personally like light rings (I feel like heavy rings would affect my keyboarding speed).

I just responded to you about the purple ring on the other thread. I had to edit that post three times, so if you see not good, that's now fixed to not gold.

Thank you voce! Anyone got any thoughts on that strange opal/pearl stone?

Thank you! It does indeed look pike mosaic opal.

The purple stone looks like amethyst to me. And that blue stone is very, very interesting. I'd send it to a lab or take it to an experiences jeweler.

Doberman,
Interesting how?

It looks glowy. Have you taken it to a jeweler for an opinion?

Hi doberman,
No not yet. We just got back in town. Those were phone pics at the hotel. I haven’t given any of them a good clean yet either or louped them. It is super, super glowy. What would give it that? Silk? Can silk be in stones besides sapphires?

Any kind of micro inclusions can make it glowy. It doesn't have to be silk (rutile needles).

Thank you! So I just gave them a good soak and clean and a preliminary loupe—tomorrow I will do in better lighting. They both cleaned up nicely. The blue one lost some of the glow so some of that could have been dust dirt etc. it is still quite pretty though.

However it appears that both stones do have inclusions. The blue one particularly, it looked like quite a few and an abrasion on the table, but I also did find what appears to be a few in the purple stone. Is it possible for synthetics to have inclusions? If not, what are typical inclusions for an amethyst? A spinel? I will try to take a photo tomorrow—you can see them under decent light actually without a loupe if you really search. It also cleaned up nicely. Very sparkly.

My video function isnt working atm, but, will try again tomorrow and will post post cleanup pics.
