First off Johnathan was awsome he educated me on diamonds like nobody else has. He was very patient and understood what i wanted and trying to staying within my budget of $10,000. We were able to do so but something came up and i cant decide what to do and i need some persoanl opinions.

I have the Vatche setting all picked out and what not but for the center we are looking at Heart and arrow round cuts
I want a 1.50 for my gf but knew that it prob wasnt going to fit in my budget.
Though Johnathan showed me this 1.55 for $7,646 that caught my attention for the remainder of my 3 hour long visit!!!

this 1.55 ct
is a K
SI 1
and its cut is excellent heres the link
http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/4404

The only problem i had with it was it has a faint yellow color being that its a K. Now heres m problem i feel like i have 2 choices. 1 get this diamond which looks great with the naked eye and is the 1.55 that i want to give my gf. that has a slight yellow tint from the profile.
or choice 2 drop in size to a 1.2 or 1.3 and get something of a higher color and clarity??

U know he told me its a persoanl prefrence and depends on the buyer. I just thinking most people dont know color, clairty, etc but want to know that carat size am i right? not to get me wrong the other 3 C's are important as well. But he stressed the most that the CUT is the key the cut can make or break a stone regardless of its color and clarity.

So im at this point where im just stuck on do i go with the bigger or drop in size to something smaller but whiter in color?? Just that 1.55 is an amazing size and looks brillant

That is a gorgeous diamond!! But only you can make the decision whether to go for this one or not, I know it is difficult...Is it possible you could ask your GF what she would prefer to do, or is it a surprise? Jon has given you excellent advice, and I would snap a well cut K up in a heartbeat, but others don't want to see any warmth in their diamonds, so just my opinion - if you aren't sure if your GF would pick, I would probably say to go a bit smaller and with a higher colour.

As to the WF diamond, it isn't quite the same cut as the GOG diamond in this instance and the Idealscope image is showing some leakage, it is still a nice make of diamond but it depends on your priorities.

I too would try to decide what your GF would like. Do you think she would like bigger but warmer in color? Or would she sacrifice some size to get a whiter appearence? If you really don't have a clue, I agree with Lorelei that you should go smaller in a whiter diamond. Has she told you what her ideal size would be?

My own preference would be to get a whiter diamond and a little smaller in size. I don't want to see color, even from the profile, but I am a little color sensitve and my ering is a D.

You won't be the one wearing it, but if the color bugs you now, it is probably not going to go away with time IMO.

I know i feel like a want the Mercedes but im not getting leather lol going with the 1.50 or i can get the toyota full loaded if i went smaller

LOL! I know you have a dilemma here! Bear in mind that some of GOG and WF''s diamonds are upgradable, so if you and your GF might want to upgrade later, then you could do so and get more size then, but go smaller with a top cut and higher colour for now. I am not trying to influence your decision, just throw some options out for you!

thats what i was thinking im lookin on GOG sites saw some 1.30 that looked ok im just bummed casue i wanted to get her the 1.50

If you get the smaller stone size will you be able to use the same setting if/when you upgrade?

If you get the 1.5ct K now, you could reuse the setting with another 1.5 when you upgrade the color.

Just something to consider. Jon can tell you how easy it would be to use the same setting with a different stone size.

The GOG stone is a very nicely cut stone, probably comparable to WF ACA''s (the one you are looking at is from their ES category)

Upgrading is a good point he did say i can always do that. Go with a 1.25 or slightly larger I can spend up to $9,000 on the rock what would u reccomend from GOGs site. Im only really fimilar with the color clarity not sure all the other factors when lookin anything from 1.25 and larger would be great

The WF is nice though its a SI2 i wish i could just ask her its such a pain i know she will be excited for whatever she gets. I just dont know if getting the 1.55 being its more yellow and yes its $7,500 is worth it.
i could always get a 1.30 or something better quality and then upgrade later like u said.

Hi surfcali -- it''s so sweet that you want to get your gf something in the 1.5 range, but don''t get hung up on numbers! I don''t know what everyone else''s experience has been, but noone has ever asked me what carat size my ring is (my mom and people in my family know only because my fiance and I picked the diamond together and talked about it, but under normal circumstances, I never discuss it).

Also, this varies very, very much by personal taste, but I can say that have a hard time telling stones in the 1.3-1.5 range apart, but I am cut/color sensitive and always notice when diamonds are not cut well or have warmth to them. So personally, I think the 0.2 ct tradeoff for a higher color is a great idea. If you notice that the diamodn appears bit yellow from teh side now, you guys will definitely continue to notice it after purchasing.

So go with your gut instinct, find the diamond that really speaks to you, and don''t worry too much about the numbers!

I have a question!!!

I shopped for a princess so I am not that familiar with rounds, but is that rare to see two sets of arrows like that? One dark and one light? That is very very cool!!!

ETA: Now that I have gone back and looked I can see them in a lot of diamonds, but they dont' stand out the way they do in the OPs first diamond. Is that lighting or the way it is cut?

Could you speak to your GF and ask her? Or even better, take her by GOG and have the two stones side-by-side? K sounds low in colour, and I''m not sure I''d go with it myself, but I''m never seen one in person. Not telling her the colour or the size and seeing them in person could do the trick.

I would take the smaller, higher color.

Ditto. I''d want one of the I SI1''s that Lorelei linked.

Okay, I''m going to go against the grain here. I vote the K.
She is most likely not going to notice the color, being it is well cut. You will have satisfied your wanting that size and she will be wowed (as well her friends and relatives). If she puts it on, and wears it for a week or so, and then tells you it is bugging her (the color), then I''m thinking GOG has a nice return policy, don''t they? Check this out. Give her a little time to wear it and decide. That''s my vote. I think that given its cut, you will be very pleased.

Me too, unless you think the K wouldn''t bother her.

Even thogh I love a big diamond, I am really into a white stone where possible. In your case a 1.3 carat is still big enough for a wow effect, so its not exactly a painful compromise imo. To me the tint would bother me and overshadow the size.

Let me put it this way....if you know that you will eventually aim to upgrade, then at least your wife has had the pleasure of a desent size stone in a beautiful cut and high color. So the next one will be the same but bigger, if at all. But if you get the tinted stone, the upgrade will be sort of fixing a (possibly percieved) flaw, and the size wont feel any bigger because it will be what you are both used to. I think the first sinareo is more exciting if you upgrade or dont.

However, ask the `boss`....she may think the color is fine and then all of this is academic!!!!

You guys are going to laugh but i some how pulled of that a friend from work has been shoppin for his gf ering and what not played it up and took the bait and how we were all laughin at him telling him what we thought. I said he saw these two rings and one was bigger but was a little yellow tinited the other smaller but whiter and more pure.
.... My gf said she rather have the smaller and better color calrity as long as it wasnt far off from the original size so if i was thinking 1.50 and went with a 1.30 or higher i should be perfect and like you said the 1.5 or higher could be a future upgrade in the years to come

Now that was SMART!!! Good for you for finding out what SHE values most!

Why not consider a J/Si stone? You''d barely have to drop under the 1.5 mark and I personally can tell the difference between a J and a K. The good news is that GOG has an EXCELLENT return/trade in policy should you decide in the wrong direction here!

that seems nice but it is a 1.31 that one i found would be the carat i wants and what do u think of its color clairty and cut from the charts it seemed good to me u think the 1.31 is the better route? if eyeclean? cause it is $8,000 vs 10,000 but im getting more diamond for the 1.53

To be honest, the difference between a 1.3 and a 1.5, when set, is really not a huge difference. 1.3 is not small!

And, going on what your girlfriend said, I just think you are "safer" with the 1.3 in a bit higher color. That would make a lovely ring.

You know her better than me, but that''s what I would recommend.

i dont disagree thats the way im going to go.
But as for the setting i was looking at a Vatche setting for $2500
im thinkin about going to my guy in the city who said he can make it for $1000 and put the xtra money to the rock

im thinking of going the 1.3 route

Can you post a photo of the setting you are looking at? There might be a similar one owned by a PS gal.
