I've posted this ring before...but it's never "starred" in it's very own thread. Was playing with my camera, and thought I'd share.

I always refer to this as "Mom's diamond"...it doesn't feel like mine. I feel sort of like I have "temporary custody' of it.

Dad bought it from a jeweler/friend in the '60s. It is said to have come out of an estate from the '20s-'30s. It was uncertified. I guess this means that it is sort of a contemporary of the original asschers, but obviously isn't one: small clipped corners and not an octagon...and not really square, either!

I got the ring after my Mom died, and eventually had it certified and remounted.

Here are the stats: (GIA)

Emerald Cut
9.15X8.23X5.89
3.91 carat

Depth: 71.6%
Table: 61%
Girdle: Thin to Very Thick
Culet: Medium

Polish: Good
Symmetry: Good

VS-1
E

Fluorescence: None

Comments: Additional extra facets are not shown

Here's an OLD picture of how it looked when my Mom had it. (She wore it 24/7)

Here it is now: Mounted in platinum (by Kathleen Dughi of Mill Valley, CA).

Side stones: Emerald Cuts (not asschers): 1.17ctw, E and F, VS-2

the ring is very nicely balanced, what size are the sidestones?

LOVE IT!!!! That asscher is just stunning, the setting looks great on the hand. Does your dad know what a real gem of an asscher he picked back in the 60s??

The sides are a little different. I''d say they "average" 4.8mm. 1.17ctw.

Stunning!

one word
yummy!
two words
very yummy!

Technicaly its an emerald cut not an asscher the cutlet area is rectangular not square.
This means it wasnt cut with equal sides.
but...
Its still yummy :}

Thanks, Mara!

Dad knew NOTHING about diamonds. He was lucky to follow the advice of the jeweler (a fellow Rotarian) who strongly urged him to purchase this ring.

None of us had ever even heard of asschers before. We knew it was "different" from most ECs we''d seen, but had no idea that the cut had a name. I remember once being in a jewelry store with my Mom and asked the sales clerk about the cut: She suggested it might be a "cushion cut"!

....but NO WAY!! I like to imagine that if I spread them around a little, people won't notice that I'm CERTIFIABLY INSANE!!

Hey...I have a question: This is the first time I've really "looked" at the stats from a PS perspective.

I've always thought this stone was particularly fat. Are the depth/table numbers normal, or startling (71.6% / 61%)???

widget

(Edited to Add:) Another question! Do you think if this stone had been cut today, they would have done it differently to get it over the magic "4ct" number? Was weight/value as big a deal in the 20-30s as it is today??

Some of the best asschers, SE''s and emerald cuts I have ever seen had depths in the 75% range.
While its out of the range of modern asscher/se and emerald cuts a little its well within the great range of the classics.

That is beautiful!

Storm...thanks for the info. Did you happen to notice the question I edited on to my last post regarding "if" it had been cut today?

Yes it would have been and look a lot worse likely too.
The added price would be way too hard to pass up even if they had to cut it badly to get it.

widget, wow, those diamonds, the whole ring...unbelievable. And I find that flower shot perfect!!

beautiful ring.

You are one lucky girl!

Hi widget
I adore all of your collection and this ring is no exception.

The fact that the centre stone was also your mother''s must make it absolutely priceless to you! The only jewelery I have which was my mother''s is her watch and I treasure it above all else.

This is interesting ! and I have no idea... It would take allot more experience about cut fashion then and now to answer this, and a hint about what the piece of rough looked like. Weight recovery would have been priority then as now, but hitting the full four carat mark down to 1% precission might have not. This is something I would like to know (an possibly find some evidence of) myself.

Wonerful stone
