My boyfriend proposed on Tuesday, our 3 year anniversary, without a ring because he wanted to surprise me and we both knew the ring was going to arrive on Friday. The proposal story is on the Anxious to get the e-ring thread, and eventually I''ll get around to posting on the proposal story thread too

But, on to more important things.... Ring pics!! Here is the first set. Info about the stone/design process is on my Getting Excited About My Ring! thread.

The stone is 1.23/E/VS1 Asscher.

LOVE. Asschers. What a beauty!

My darling fiance has a tendency to obsess, and is not quite satisfied with the workmanship on the ring. The flaws he is unhappy about are marked on the photo. Opinions? Please tell it to me straight, we are trying to decide whether we should send the ring back or not
39.gif

I must add that it looks lovely on my hand and the most noticeable problem is the head twist since it is a square stone. I''ll try to post hand pics later but I''m in lab now and need to get some work done.

That is one G.O.R.G.E.O.U.S stone, sciencegeek!!! I love that first picture where you can see all of the facet faces and that X!!! And you know we must have some hand pics! I''m loving the double prongs too!!

Congratulations!!

Well, to be honest, I didn''t notice any of the flaws until you pointed them out. I would agree that the twisted head would be annoying. I think that if you guys aren''t happy with it, send it back! If it really is shoddy worksmanship, it''ll be better in the long-run to send it back now to be completely remade than to get it redone in 10 years when your stone falls out of the prongs.

Hmm, I can understand your pain. I can''t really see any of the issues in the photos except the head twist (but that may just be because they''re small), but I think the head twist would be enough for me to send it back.
7.gif

But then, I''m in the "I paid good money for this and I expect it to be well done" camp.

Otherwise, it''s beautiful, but we definitely need some hand shots!!

It''s beautiful sciencegeek! I would not have noticed the problems if you had not pointed them out, but now that you have I see what you are talking about. I would want to get the slightly crookedness corrected if I were you because like you said, with a square stone, you want it to all be symmetrical. I also can see what you mean about the curved vs. the straight prongs. I am obsessed with prongs myself, lol. I like them to be curved. I''d ask for that to be changed too if it were my ring.

I''m with you guys, the only one I notice is the head twist. And I think it''s less noticeable on my hand than in the photos because the ring never sits exactly straight on my finger anyways, and I think the photo may have a bit of optical illusion to it. The shank has a slight knife edge to it, so light reflects differently off the top and bottom. I do think it is a tiny bit twisted though.

I posted the "flaws" because my fiance said, if Pricescope is okay with it I''m okay with it

He knows what tough critics you all are

I have to admit I''m starting to get annoyed with him peering at my beautiful new ring because I know he''s just trying to find things wrong with it!

I thnik this is a gorgeous ring.

What an asscher! Congrats!
36.gif

Like the others, I really can't see anything except maybe in the head tilt pic but I agree that the picture itself seems "tilted"???? it's YOU who wears this beauty and YOU who much decide if these things bother you.

1.gif

What a gorgeous stone and ring! I love asschers in general, and yours is just beautifully proportioned along with having great color and clairty! enjoy, and best wishes for your engagement.

You should decide if the workmanship is right for you, and get it fixed if it isn''t. I''m sure Whiteflash will take care of any problems.

Nice ring design and stone but i think the faults you have pointed out are unaceptible!

If you have a ring custom made by hand there is always likley to be slight inperfections to it . These small things add to the caracter of the piece and its individuality however they should be very hard to detect and most definatly not noticed on a Photo! The angle on the stone is the most obvious and should have been picked up by quality control before you recieved the ring. It is posible that this may have happend while in the post but unlikly if it was packed well. These Things can be easily fixed and Im sure that if you return the ring and point out the faults with it they will be more than happy to fix the problem for you. I know its a pain because you want to wear your new ring but sort it out asap !

Let me know how you get on

Phillip

Oh my,

What a beautiful stone! If I were you, I''d hate to send it back, especially after waiting for so long to get it. The thing is, you guys designed it, right? So there''s an artmanship air to it too, right? I''m sure that your FI wants the design to look perfect.

I''m totally torn.

If I am you: Don''t you dare take this ring of my finger!

If I am him: I wanted it to be perfect for you!

Oh ScienceGeek, whatever you guys decide, it''s a tough one. The tilted head does give it character, though..

I agree with Phillip. When you spend this much on a ring, it better be perfect or else you need to fix it. I know, however, how hard it is to let go of your engagement ring since you just got it and you want to wear it out; trust me though, you''d be better served to have it fixed now before it bugs you in the future. It is hard to see the flaws now because it is new and you don''t want to let it go, but you *will* see them later when the bliss of the engagement has worn a little.

Sciencegeek, Gorgeous ring.

The twist I would get fixed, because it would just bother me to no end. The other flaws, I wouldn''t really worry about, unless it diminished the security of the stone. Not sure if they do, but I would just make sure.

Sorry

7.gif
for the accusation before. I must have reread the post 3 times to make sure.

I love it! So elegant and simple and lovingly design by your FI! Good luck with deciding what to do!

oh it''s so beautiful! and ditto on what everyone else has said:

-you paid too much for it not to be exactly what you wanted
-the head tilt also the only thinig i notcied
-security of the stone --- muy importante
-good luck on whatever you decide!

keep us posted....and hand pics lady!

I would love to give you all hand pics, but my fiance still hasn''t decided if he''s going to return the digital camera I gave him for our anniversary and get a different one, so it''s sealed in the box
20.gif
Also, the day after I got my ring I sliced one of my fingers open trying to cut a pomegranate. The Bandaid does not complement the ring so well
8.gif
Such a klutz
26.gif

So the update on the ring is I''m sending it back
39.gif
I looked at it very carefully and a few more things became obvious:

1. The inside of the basket is not polished at all
2. All 4 sets of prongs have dings or file marks on them

We decided this is unacceptable so I''ll have to part with my ring for awhile. The good news is they will still accept it if I ship it the Monday after Thanksgiving so I can wear it to the family celebrations and not have to do the awful "I''m engaged!! Oh, no, no ring right now
15.gif
"

I''m a little grumpy that they promised it would not be a rush job, everything would be just as high quality (my fiance requested that they ship it one day earlier than they had planned) and then when we called to complain about the problems they said "Well, we just didn''t have enough time to make it perfect." But as long as everything is fixed all will be forgiven I guess.

oh, how did i miss this thread? that''s what being on vacation will do to you.

sciencegeek, congratulations on your engagement and your beautiful ring!
30.gif
i am obsessed with asschers and yours is just stunning. sorry to hear that the setting didn''t come out exactly as you had hoped the first time around but i''m sure it will be as good as new soon enough.

congrats!!!

sciencegeek-
that is a fantastic ring!!!! i love asschers!! and i love that setting!

im sorry you have to send it back
8.gif
... i feel i can relate- i noticed my side stones were the *tiniest* bit loose- only a few days after i got my ering, and i seriously *flipped out*... luckily a local jeweler i trust was able to fix it in 15 minutes while i waited!!! i was so afraid i would have to send it back (my FI got the ring ordered from LA, and I''m in SF) - so i totally understand... i was a bit annoyed that the jewelers my FI ordered from had done such a sloppy job and my FI felt terrible bc he thought he had got me a ''bad ring'' (isn''t he eloquent).... but once it was fixed and back on my hand i felt soooooo much better and all everything was all good. (plus the LA jeweler was totally apologetic and was v anxious that i was happy w/it bc my FI''s uncle is a BIG customer.. )

my FI tells me it''s working against him that i work in a lab w/all these microscopes (i have to admit i scrutined the hell outta my ring under 20x at my lab before/after the fix) but all i''m saying is- if i wasn''t so insane then i might have lost a diamond if the setting became more loose!

anyhow, i know you feel grumpy now but it will all be worth it because once it''s fixed you will feel like a million bucks!

-flopkins

ps i hope all your family oohs and ahhs over it at thanksgiving!!

20x!!! You are a tough critic

I felt bad that I put mine on the dissecting scope and that''s only 6x

I thought I was being overly critical, but apparently I''m not the only one
1.gif
Thanks for making me feel better about the ring and being so fussy. My fiance was just like yours, he felt terrible and I had to reassure him that it wasn''t his fault, and that it would get fixed, even if I had to go all psycho b*tch on the jeweler (luckily I didn''t, they were very accommodating)

That is a beautiful, classic ring! Congrats!

haha i know i''m a tad overboard, but heck, i''ve got about $250K+ worth of microscopes in my lab, and all we do is look a millions of cells all day, why not put them to good use?!
9.gif
9.gif
(it was the cheapest microscope anyway- just the stereoscope) besides, it wasn''t to be critical... I was admiring the ring of course!!
30.gif
plus, my center stone is an SI2 and was trying to identify the feather... i can only see if from the side...i think! im not a professional, so who knows! the jeweler claims the other inclusion are hidden by the mounting somehow... dunnos. whatever, i''ve got enough dust and lint on it by now, who cares?!

and im so glad your jeweler was accomodating! it makes things much better... and i dont think you should feel fussy at all! obviously they didn''t meet your expectations and you should always get what you want... esp if it''s a custom job!

Science - Sorry you are having to part with your ring! But think it is a good idea to get it right before too much time passes. And i think it is SUPER wonderful that they will let you hang on to it till after Thanksgiving. That would be the most depressing thing ever... IM ENGAGED, and i had to send back the ring.

That is a gorgeous classic setting! If you don''t mind me asking, how many mm wide is it and about how much did it cost? I have a plain Tiffany setting and I think it''s a little on the thin side since it slide around my finger more than I''d like.

Isn''t this more of a sizing problem than a shank width problem? The back of my ring is about 3mm and I think it tapers to about 1.5mm when it meets the stone, but I''m not sure and I don''t have the caliper with me.

The extra width (little as 3mm is) in the back of the shank makes the ring stay in lace. A vrey thin band all around leaves the ring to spin. Bots statements have a prong-set solitaire in mind... if the front of the ring would be flat like a cab... than anything goes - the shank can be very thin, like some antique pieces have
