Does anyone have any recommendations on the best "true red" nail polish? I want a classic red without any orange undertones. Deep, true blue-red...

Also, any recs on red lipstick to wear?

I''m attending formal wedding and want to do red nails and lips.

Thanks ladies!

Chanel makes a couple of nice ones, (great lips and some nice red polish too) as does OPI. I never wear orange reds but prefer ones with a touch of brown. I think Nars makes a great red lip and polish, Jungle Red I want to say, also their Red Lizard is gorgeous. They also have these nice matte crayon things in a couple of nice red shades too! I love that look, with just some black eyeliner and a bit of nude shimmer on the eyes, and not a lot of blush if any.

Thanks diamondfan! That is exactly the look I want with the black eyeliner... any recs on eyeshadow?

I love the look Anne Hathaway had going on in The Devil Wears Prada at the formal event. I wish I looked like her too!! :)

I use Chanel- Ruby Slipper. Love it.

I would stick with something more nude but with a bit a gleam. Not glitter chunks, but a nice sheen to it. Laura Mercier and YSL make nice nudes, again, Nars also has one or two that can be used all over the eyelid. Make sure your brows are very groomed too. Sometimes for that look I do not use liner under my eyes or use mascara on my bottom lashes. You can highlight the brow bone a bit, but I would not use any real obvious eyeshadow in the crease. Then, do a very neutral light blush, sometimes I use a bronzer that is matte and put it on very lightly, and finish on the cheek bone with a bit of subtle highlighter. It should look great!

I bought the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in both Dragon Girl (siren red) and Forbidden Red (brick red). They are both gorgeous colors but different... they do go on super velvetty and being a pencil they have a precise application without being harsh like the thin lip pencils can be. It lasts well... I just love them!

I have a shimmery red polish by MAC in Rocker and a similar one by Orly in Crawford''s Wine. The MAC seems to be a bit darker with a stronger blue base; the Orly looks to be a more pure red, though also darker than straight up red.

A great nude shadow is Benefit Creaseless Cream Eyeshadow in R.S.V.P. (sparkling champagne). I am very fair and it adds just a touch of shimmery, natural color. In Skinny Jeans (pewter) it can give a smokey shadow look along the lashlines or in the crease or across the lid. Build it up and you can get a fairly dark line with it. They also have a black one, but I haven''t tried it. This stuff does stay on as a shadow or a liner.

For a darker black line that stays put, try MAC''s Liquidlast... it does not budge... the black is very, very black. It''s a liquid liner and the brush gives a super precise line. They also have Fluidline which is a gel liner and you need the small, angled brush to apply it. It also lasts and can give a very precise or a softened line.

Forgot to add...that is nail polish!

I really like OPI''s An Affair in Red Square red nailpolish.

OPI's "OPI Red", MAC's "Louboutin Red" and Essie's "Jelly Apple" are my favorites. All are true cream reds, with no orange or blue undertone.

Jelly Apple is extremely shiny when dry, but takes three coats to get the perfect red color.

I like OPI's "I'm not really a waitress". It is a deep red with a hint of shimmer.

I love that color too, but this look I think requires a more true red without shimmer in it. I do love that color for toes almost all year, except for the summer time.

Thanks for the replies. I''m going to the mall today. I live in Iowa so my options ate limited... Our "best" dept store is von Maur. They carry Chanel, but I do not think we have Nars. I believe they also carry Laura Mercier. Most of my cosmetics are MAC, which I order online or buy in Chicago.

My skin tone is medium, not very pale. I have blue eyes and dark brownish-red hair. Do you think I should try this look with the red tones (coppery) that are in my hair? Or, should I stick to my usual sheer nails (OPI bubble bath or Essie Mademoiselle) and do something else on my lips?

Thanks for the advice...

LOL! It is on my toes now! I usually have a French on my fingers which now have a coat of Birthday Babe on them for the holidays.

Dancingqueen, what color dress are you wearing to the wedding? If you''re wearing black, I think red nails would look great with a smoky eye and nude lip.

My dress is black satin. It''s a Calvin Klein dress with wider straps that cross in the back. It''s knee-length, but I''ve seen the same dress in other colors and floor-length in stores this year. I don''t usually do a nude lip, but love the look. Should I get something "sparkly"? I love the ad for the Chanel gloss that shows the lips with a pearl necklace between the teeth? Is something like that too sparkly?

I love deep red nail polish, the first great one I found (and by the way I just go to drug stores or beauty supply stores, I refuse to pay super high prices), was by Sally Hansen called "Oriental Red" it was perfect. But for some reason the polish in the bottle would not last. It started to dry up. I found a better quality polish by ORLY and it''s called "Bus Stop Crimson" and I''ve been getting tons of compliments on it all week.

OPI "got the blues for red," and "quarter-of-a-cent cherry." Both are excellent blue-red shades.

a great true red for me is 'I'm Not Really a Waitress' by OPI. a total classic to me.

if you are looking for a darker wine red...one that i am currently in love with is 'Oh to be 25 Again' also by OPI. I seriously love this color for fall and winter when you don't want a brighter red.

it's hard for me to find red's i really like, i have an olive skin tone and the two above are both the best i have found on me.

hehe- i too have "waitress" on my toes. I''d say it was a Holiday thing, but it truly is my fave toe color.

Here are a bunch of looks from Sephora. The classic glam may be what you had in mind originally. That is a great look with the red nails!

I have been doing the summer survival look since the summer. You may want to consider that with its nude lip. If you do the summer thing I would not do the red polish but a French or something close to the lips.

I''m Not Really a Waitress was going to be my suggestion too - for slightly pinkier red, I''m always drawn to Nice Color, Eh? too.

DancingQueen - where in IA? I just moved to Davenport - I think there is a severe lack of IA PSers!

I have that on my toes as well! What a small world...

I LOVE that classic glam. I also do love Waitress but if I recall it is a deep ruby but with frost, and again, I think the classic glam was a very red cream lipstick without frost. I also love bubble bath. Today I did french, with mademoiselle as the top coat and it is in the bag as the bottom, with the white line (blanc) in between. I happen to have very long nail beds and they are not too wide, so I do not need a long white of the nail for this to look nice. I tend to dislike very wide white lines and I have my manicurist paint it curved in a semi circle instead of straigh across which I think looks more natural.

That classic glam look is very much what I was picturing. I love it on blondes with very pale skin. However it can certainly work, you just need to play with the undertones of the colors you use since different skin tones and hair colors will affect how things look on you. Lately I do the very shimmery smoky eye and a very nude lip, but since my lips are naturally very pink I must mute them down first or the nude looks muddy and ashy. It is the same with reds. You might need a bit more brown and blue versus orange, and one shade can look great while another clashes with your skin tone. You normally play up either the eyes or the mouth but not both, and this is just a gorgeous way to go. I love it with a very chic chignon and smooth hair or with a sort of Veronica Lake off center part with a wave. I am sure it will look great with the dress you are describing too!

Thanks for the tips everyone! It turns out I already had OPI''s got the blues for red so I used that on my nails. I ended up buying a Clinique lipstick (and I usually don''t like Clinique) called "angel red". Everything else seemed very orange in the store.

Elmorton -- I live in Bettendorf and work in Davenport.

My favourite red is Revlon ''Vixen''. Which I often wear on my toes in the summer. It''s a very deep dark rich red. Very classy.

No way! Small world!

For polish I like "Big Apple Red" by Opi (I think it''s Opi). Might be on the lighter side though- not as blue. A nice, rich color.

OPI''s St. Petersburg Burgundy is gorgeous. No sparkle, just a classic 1940s deep true red. It is not burgundy as the name suggests but a deep, true red.
