I'm definitely interested in this and now that I'm done with school I actually HAVE free time to write but I'm sort of at a loss as to what I should write about. I don't think that I am that creative and its an issue. Everything I think I want to write about has already been done 1000x over. Suggestions to get the juices flowing are very welcome.

Yeah, no kidding - I feel like for my interests, fantasy would be way easier than sci-fi, but it feels virtually impossible to do something fresh in the fantasy genre. Bah.

Me, too! I have a lot of ideas floating around in my head but I would hate to end up with something Twilight-ish...because that is where my thoughts keep trying to go.

Everyone should look up local write-ins on the NaNoWriMo website. We have A TON of write-ins going on here in the Chicago area, a lot of bookstores and coffee shops host them. That's a GREAT place to go, especially on November 1st, to get the juices flowing.
There is NO one here in my city in china... there are some in china but not anywhere near me :( Bummer!! I did make one of the psers my friend, I think... hehe

The basic story of mine (boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy finds self, boy gets girl) is super common, but the main detail of it is so unique I haven't seen anyone touch it since I came up with the idea 15 years ago. I keep waiting for someone to use this but no one ever has. Occasionally you'll see this profession in a background character that doesn't do anything, but I only know of one story (totally different story though) that focuses on this profession and that was more than 50 years ago and it's the only one I know of at all.

I don't even want to say what it is until I'm done :P

I am nowhere near creative enough to write a novel, but I have decided to sign up and implement the plan to academic writing. I would love to have a support thread so we can motivated by each others creativity and productivity.

Make one! I'll cheer you on if you cheer on me

If that's what you want to write, write it. Don't get hung up too much about whether it's new or "fresh" -- down that way lies a never-ending rabbit hole of second-guessing and dissatisfaction.

Write what makes you happy. Don't worry about the rest.

(of course, this is all very easy to say, and when it comes to my own work I never believe a word of it [with good reason!], but nevertheless I think it's not something you should worry about for a NaNo project, which is just supposed to be for fun.)

I think we should definitely have a support thread come Nov. 1. We can keep each other updated on our progress (or lack thereof, but hopefully not!) and keep each other motivated. Let's do it!

Liane, thanks. I'm probably going to stick to sci-fi anyway. I feel like I can get more creative with my storylines, and I'm much more invested in it as a reader and as a writer. The bad part about writing something that I feel is SUPER overdone is that I'll lose interest in it.

I haven't figured out which one to write for NaNoWriMo though - we'll see! :)

I think people's fears of being original enough, or creative enough, or good enough are what too often stifle the creative process. I say NaNoWriMo is the opportunity to forget those fears, sit down at your laptop (or notebook) and just write! Get it out there. I think you'll surprise yourselves when you start writing.

I just got a packet of NaNoWriMo buttons, stickers, and a big chart for writing down all the WriMos' names and progress towards their word counts today. I don't even remember signing up for it all, but it's pretty cool! I'm excited!

Ooh fun haven! I want a sticker but it seems silly to spend $5 on 5 stickers to have shipped to china! I want to put it on my laptop, I'm about 25 years behind in maturity if you look at my laptop lol

I have decided to stop researching. Last night I was looking around and found another book with a secondary character that shared a few things in common with my main character and I started feeling like I need to change my story. I'm just gonna run with whatever and do research after the fact :P

Haven, too bad I'm not in Chicago anymore. It'd be fun to hang out with you and write! :)

I think I'm going to keep my other ideas on the backburner, and do a crazy, fun, silly and totally not serious YA book for NaNoWriMo.

I wanna sticker! Lol I love stickers.

I have an idea in mind, and I think I will abandon my original story for now...I have lost the thread of it, and I can't seem to get it back. So I will just do something fun for this project ::)

Nathan Bransford, whose blog is a good resource in general, had a timely post yesterday on NaNo and choosing the right idea (including a couple of basic points that it might be advisable to consider before you saddle up for the frenzy of writing next month):

http://blog.nathanbransford.com/2010/10/nanowrimo-boot-camp-choosing-right-idea.html

He'll be doing more posts on the topic for the rest of this week, I think.

I'm officially freaking out. I have nothing. No plot, no real understanding of my characters, nada. Zip. zilch.

Can I go to my room and cry now?

Ugh - I feel just the opposite! Like I have too much and it's fizzing out... like when you wait too long to... hehe anyway, I am going to just not even think about it for the next few days and hope for the best.

Okay, apparently I have failed. Failed to drop it for the next 5 days lol I am completely enthralled with spanish history in the 1400's, 1500's, 1600's, and early 1700's. Ugh lol I am way too excited. I need a bitch slap!

I can't decide which of my ideas I want to progress with. One is a Western and might be fun. The other would be fantasy.

Check out the forums on the NaNo website, there's an entire "Adoption" section where people share abandoned ideas. Warning: There are A LOT of fantasy-loving young adults on there. But there are also some great ideas, too!

And don't cry, this month is all about letting the ideas come to you. Have you sat down with a blank page yet? Sometimes the act of writing itself is all it takes to get the ideas flowing.
Try this: Give yourself a prompt, and start writing whatever comes to mind in response to it. Spend ten solid minutes writing. Then, see if you can really stop after ten minutes. I'll be you can't. :cheeky:

That would have been the best! We could have taken Kindle reading breaks together, too!
I just learned that my school's library is all into NaNo, and we're even hosting some write-ins! I'm very excited.

Ooh I'm so jealous! You guys are my only connection. My daughter might do something but I don't think she has her heart in it and it's not quite the same. I have no peers who will join me and no one in this city with me doing it that I know of. I've tried looking for you guys but no luck.

Though I must say I got a chuckle - yeah we can hang out writing together and when we need a break we can read beside each other lol - that's like the most anti-social social event I've heard of ;D

Haven, Cehra, ah well, at least we'll be able to keep each other company online! Though I love Kindle reading breaks. I was waiting at the hospital while my mom was getting her colonoscopy, and the nurse was asking me about my Kindle. I feel like a walking advertisement for it :)

Cehra, are you in PS group on a certain well known social networking site? I'm not sure if you meant find US exactly, or find people doing NaNoWriMo in your area :P

Stream of consciousness writing? Remember, we don't care about publishing quality for this! Just write!

Oh I was looking for you guys but on the NaNo website. I think I found one of you :P

Yeah, for 15 years I have wanted to spit out this story and now that I've been doing all of this research it's more of a regurgitation lol Still, I only expect to have (a complete set of) bones by the end of the month so that if I choose to continue I can hone and polish and perfect it later.
