NEED ADVICE ON HOW TO JOIN THE DIAMOND BUSINESS/INDUSTRY

alrite guys, i need some advice, i''''m a business student in university rite now, and i want to know if i should take private gemology courses to find out more about diamonds, because i want to do something in the diamond business, either jewellry stores, import/export, synthetics, etc... whats the best way to learn the skills that i need in order to succeed in teh diamond business and whcih parts of the diamond business are good to go into, e.g. export/import , thanks guys

There are two aspects to your question:

1) learning how to run a business. Unfortunately, business schools are not typically set up to teach people how to run their own business.

2) Learning about diamonds and other jewelry. A really good place to start is just by learning here on the forums. You can pick up a wealth of information well beyond what the normal jewelry store person knows in a few months.


In the end, you should probably spend some time working in the industry in a local jewery store to learn some of the ropes.

Look for a post in the past several weeks by another person asking the same questions for other answers:
There were post in both this forum and Rocky Talk by the same guy (under a name of a magaizine business).

I can''t possibly know if this fits you at all, but grad school internships helped me allot deciding what I liked to do most. The resulting connections didn''t hurt either. Is it too late to hitch a short ride like that with a jewelry related business ?

There are business courses targeted for the jewelry business... sure you know that. Those do not seem quite as sophisticated as BS content, but do demonstrate there is some opening for the respective academic profile. Well, IMO at least.

Before starting out on business venture in Diamonds and/or jewelry, it is very important to get enough knowledge on gems & diamonds by studying Gemology. There must be hundreds of institutes in US doing that.
Incidentally, I leave in Bangkok and one institute I can recommend is Asian Institute of Gemological Sciences (AIGS). One of the oldest in this part of ther world and in existence for last 26 years and going strong. Offers a complete diploma on gemology, covering subjects of colored gemstones, synthetics and diamond grading and appraisal. Visit their website www.aigsthailand.com

The biggest advantage of studying gemology in Bangkok is the accessibility to the world famous wholesale markets of Bangkok and Chantaburi in Thailand. Believe me nobody can teach you business. Only visiting the traders into the open markets and observing them how they buy and sell, how they negotiate prices, what kind of quality they pick and what they avoid can make you understand the intricacies of gems and diamond business.

Closeness to minining areas of Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia, Sri Lanka helps a lot and an experience worth all the time and money spent.
