Need design help with this Art Deco Inspired Setting

@MiniMinerva thanks for this link! I think I really need to read it!
Awww you’re welcome but I can’t take any credit! Just an admirer of @yssie and excited for you to have the perfect setting for your stone’s characteristics.

Ha! Good thing DH is an engineer! Here's a Bezel experiment with my stone. I think I can go for faux bezel with an open gallery :appl:

What do you think ladies?

@Dmndsr4evr11 you might be able to conduct a similar experiment for your stone...

Oh this one @lulu_ma
Would you change the NSEW positions with say a tapered bullet or something similar instead? Maybe a step cut trapezoid?

Toughie, Idk. I just thought this was pretty...

I think I still like the way the other one looks on. But this one is a contender.

I think it could work haha. This way it has some elements like the first ring that you liked.

Whoa-did you change the accent rounds to tapered baguettes? How'd you do that so fast!

Thanks!

Hahaha I have an app on my phone. I found the right sized trapezoids and cut them out and pasted them over the top of the ring image :)

I actually think it looks better than the original image lol but can't say if it's better than the first ring that you liked.

I like it better too @maryjane04 . Thanks! What's the name of the app pls? I think I might need it :D

It's called PicsArt.
So whatever image you have you can do cutouts.. and make them into stickers and you can stick them on anything! I have used this to check if my new furniture will suit the walls in my house hahaha. Technology these days huh?

SO smart! Thanks!

Hi Ladies, I’m trying to figure out if my inspo setting has full cut or single cut melee.

Can you take a peek at this video and lmk what you think?

Thanks!

I’m not sure but I have full cut melee on my halo and wish I had gone for single cut. Full cut goes mad under lights and IMO it can take away from your centre stone, especially if it is antique.

@meely do you know what size your melee stones are? I think mine will be 1.5 pointers.

I should but I don’t I’m afraid here is my ring.

Someone more technical will hopefully explain it better but the issue is the number of facets. Lots more in full cut as there are in a modern brilliant cut round. Whereas in an oec you have a lot less facets. You want your sparkles to match basically. Now I have a modern precision oval, the melee look gorgeous under most lighting conditions but under spot lights they take away from my oval. If I could go back I would make both halo rows single cuts. Here is a photo taken with a flash to recreate what happens under spots, basically you get a very prominent ring of halo diamonds which I don’t love.

Anyway just my perspective and someone else may say different!
Oh and because my ring is gorgeous normally here is what it looks like in a less unflattering light!

thanks for the pic @meely ! Thanks a gorgeous ring. So both halos are small and larger full cut diamonds?

can’t tell from the video, but you inspiration pics from post 1 do not look like single cuts to me.
they may not be modern full cuts, though.

I just asked them and they said they’re OECs!

thanks for doing that @mjea ! that makes it a bit more challenging. where does one get oec melee?

:shock:Surely someone here knows. Maybe custom cut earth or lab diamonds? If that’s too expensive or too much work, maybe go with single cuts?

I got a lead on some single cuts. I'm obsessed with getting the color of the melee to perfectly match the center stone. We'll see how I do...

Single cuts would be my choice with an antique style stone. I'd only use OECs if using larger stones. You really don't have to match the melee color, because they are not going to look the same color as your main stone due to their small size. The ring maker almost always sources the melee for the setting, so I would be choosing the ringmaker first, and then talk to them about the melee stones for the setting.

Melee in inspo are definitely not single cuts.

Beware vendors who assure you they can source single cuts in specific colour grades or ranges. That's not how melee are distributed. They come in presorted lots - high colour, low colour, light yellow, etc. What one vendor calls "D/E/F" melee, another might call "F/G", and another "colourless". What one vendor calls "I/J", another might call "J/K/L", and another "L/M" or "near colourless". Etc.

For your use case the light yellow stuff (whatever your vendor of choice calls it) might be the best choice, to start to offset size difference. Probably also the most expensive option though.

Ditto @diamondseeker2006 - if you're working with a reputable vendor who specializes in old stones/designs it will definitely be easiest, safest, and cheapest to have your vendor source all your melee and side stones.

Thanks for catching that @yssie. I don’t have any single cuts myself it’s hard for me to tell the difference over video.

The bench who made my er years ago and did my reset 3 years ago worked for Tiffany’s but I don’t think anyone in Boston is a old cut specialist.

I definitely want melee that is creamier than G/H. Here’s a quick pic next to my reset.

I get the sense that it would be much easier to source different color grades in full cut melee versus single cut.

I ‘think’ my ring is full cuts and round brilliants. Gah all that torturous process of designing the thing and I cannot remember! Not enough attention paid obviously!

What color is your centre stone is it an L? .
Reason I ask is that David Klass is setting my N for me at the moment and yesterday I messaged him about doing an eternity band at the same time because I don’t want the contrast between a modern eternity band and my lower color antique cut stone. I asked for single cuts and he said that they always look very white, so he is going to try and source some OECs for me instead as they will be a better match in his opinion. Just something to consider, if you have got a lower color stone, whether you happy about that potential contrast.

Edit - sorry Lulu ma didn’t read through the thread properly. It sounds like you don’t want that contrast either so perhaps lower color OECs would work for you too, if they can be obtaimed.

@meely what size stones are going into your eternity band? Thanks for data on single cuts-I hadn't heard that they face up whiter.

The round melee in my inspo ring is estimated to be 1.5 mm. My center stone is an M. It faces up whiter so I am hoping that I/J melee will work. Here's a pic next to my I color stud.
