Need design help with this Art Deco Inspired Setting

edit to add: I really like your inspiration setting a LOT. I think it’s very cool with the halo and the baguettes. You could angle the two baguettes on either side of the long baguette a bit (you would probably need longer ones though) so that they are a bit more “triangular” - I think that would look a bit more streamlined than the current look. I can neither draw nor use photoshop so I can’t show you what I mean but I hope you can picture it :D

Did some googling and came across another setting I liked:

Or, instead of putting 3 straight baguettes or my initial angling idea which I can’t explain, how about having more triangular baguettes at the edges of the halo, like these:

So your original setting idea, but with one larger tapered baguette on either side as opposed to 3 straight ones.

Oh thanks! I like the idea of the angled baguettes.

I can’t do the 2nd one as that is almost exactly the same setting I had for my er for 18 years. For this OEC ring, I want something different.

I dream of this finger coverage

Oh I didn’t mean to get rid of the milgrain halo, I meant instead of the 3 baguettes to put a single tapered baguette like in the second image, or to do 3 baguettes where the central one is long and slim, and the top and bottom are set at an angle.

Do you like the idea of an octagonal halo with an airline like the first pic? If I followed all the earlier comments correctly you need something where the basket can be kind of open (I think???) and I think an airline can help with that right?

Oh thx for clarifying!

I think everyone’s octagonal settings are beautiful, but since this is my first halo I feel like round is a safer choice for me. And I could totally consider an airline if it would resolve the gallery issue. Thx for the suggestion!

Lulu_ma, your inspiration setting is perfect and possible. Go for it!

IMO, CVB would be a great designer to tap for this type of Art Deco inspired setting, it is what she excels at.

An East Coast based top designer and jeweler is Steven Kirsch. His craftsmanship and design skills are excellent. You could basically sit back and watch as he does his magic, not have to manage the vision and design process.

With DK you would be working with a less autonomous design team, CADs might be reviewed a couple times and reworked (PSers could help you), but the DK team is amenable and easy to rework with. Price point more affordable. Final results are great, Uber Bench highly competent.

All three designers I mention above have “Show Me Your” threads, of collected works, here on PS, that you could check out.

@LightBright Oh yes Steven Kirsch. I will have to check out the SMTB threads!

I do love my inspo setting...

Another setting that I think is beautiful. But the original Deco halo setting is more my style...

Thanks @ac117 ugh. This exactly the kind of temp setting I was thinking of doing except with 8 prongs. Tiny hiccup it only goes up to 10mm...

Do you happen to remember about how much these settings run? I wonder if it would be worth it to get one and see if the prongs can be customized...

I’m sorry I don’t, I just remember PSers all agreeing that it was very reasonable (but then again gold is sky high right now), hopefully someone who has it could chime in!

I also second the idea of Alex making a temp setting (he seems to do that only for stones he sells and at cost) or DK.

I agree with getting Alex to make you temp or semi temp setting lol he's super reasonable. At first I thought I was going to get a temp setting from him, which turns out to be more a semi permanent temp lol I think it's too nice to pull apart now despite me swooning over a CVB setting.

A temp setting so you can enjoy your precious now while we wait for her permanent dress!

@maryjane04 is the ring in your profile pic from Alex?! It’s pretty.

Is that setting considered a collet setting with prongs?

Yes @lulu_ma Alex made this ring for me :)

Its a faux bezel with prongs. I didn't want the collet setting as it covers the pavilion. If I tell you how much I paid for the setting, you'd drop dead lol. It's that reasonable haha.

@maryjane04 Love the setting! Out of curiosity what is the depth of your stone?

Can you please post a pic of the gallery? I wish there was a thread on this beauty!

@lulu_ma it's 73.2% deep. So deep and set really low. I kinda wished it was a fraction higher to be honest. But I'm quite happy the way it is as the crown is puffy and it appears high anyway.

Thank you for your lovely comments! You couldn't tell from the side profile how deep it is.

@maryjane04 you read my mind!

Wow! The gallery is so pretty! I wish I would do a gallery like that.

I think my inspo Deco setting is also a faux bezel.

Lol @lulu_ma I'm biased because a faux bezel not only offers protection to the girdle but also increases valuable finger real estate. You can't go wrong haha.

@maryjane04 I've been obsessed with finger coverage ever since I tried on that Ivy and Rose ring...

I hear ya girl!! I looked at a ring from Ivy and Rose as well, it was a 9mm omc but the diamond didn't do it for me. Then I saw that ring that you considered but alas omc are more my thing - maybe one day I'd like an oec.

I've got big fingers and this is still small :( I think I need a halo or upgrade to a 5ct lol.

Speaking of halos, my favourite would be the CVB Lisette if I could have one. https://www.distinctivegem.com/products/the-lisette-halo

Otherwise I was tempted to do a cluster so I'm busy collecting baby omc except this setting is too pretty to pull apart. I'll have to sit on it for a year or so.

@maryjane04 the current setting you have is too pretty to be a temp setting.

But when you get bored of it the Lisette is Tdf!

I know @lulu_ma maybe when DSS sinks in and I need to scratch that itch. Or just lose weight so my fingers get smaller then my ring is perfect :lol-2:

Oh stop! I bet you have lovely fingers! I'm a size 6.5-that's why I need a bigger diamond:lol-2:

I think a may have found a way to get my dream setting without a closed gallery!

What is a make the bottom more like this ring?

If you bought the diamond from Alex, he is 100% the perfect designer to ask to create a temp setting. I wish I could tap his skills for a setting but he limits his work to customers at this point, you are lucky to have access to his work. I really like his designs and craftsmanship.

IMO, Alex Park could probably execute your Art Deco halo design well too (ask him). I would personally go for the setting you want first and not wear a temp setting (it just adds more $ and delay to what you ultimately want). Just my two cents.

I’m not sure you need to care about enclosed setting with the original design you posted first. That gallery is pretty open. It will let in light to the back of the stone. If you want to see how your stone looks with a closed basket or bezel, use aluminum foil to create a “test bezel”.

Old cut stones that are enclosed and bezeled take on more facet definition, become “steelier” in color and yes the body tint changes. Old cut stones that are pronged with an open basket can appear leakier and lighter in color. I personally like the look of a leaky antique stone, they appear watery and shimmery like some modern ovals. This is not a bad thing for me, but some people prefer bezels.

So what I’m saying is, I would go for the design you want, using a good designer, and I would not assume you need to treat your stone with a bezel, enclosed basket, etc. I would ask the designer for advice, but try making the style you want, first and see how it looks.

@LightBright I'm hoping I can make a faux bezel like Maryjane04's work. I wish I had some sample settings to experiment with...
