Today I went and tried on dresses for the first time, and found 2 that I love! Help me decide between them!!
First one...

I apologize for poor quality of pics! Had to use my phone. Here is a better pic of detail in dress 1:

Wondering if these pics are too small...? Anyway, here is dress 2:

again

If I choose dress 2, I will wear this belt with it, in ivory

one more shot. Ok, help me pick please!!!!

I like the number 1 the best. The fabric looks more floaty and romantic

I love the fabric of the first one too. I also should mention that the second dress looks much more beautiful in person. It has pockets (which I love) and it is only $575. The belt is around 400. The first dress is about $2700. The reception will take place outdoors, the ceremony is in a church, so I wanted a mix of casual and formal.
Obviously, the price difference is huge, so that''s a big factor. I just wanted to get some input though and an outside opinion.

1

2 looks cheap to me... the fabric just doesn't look like a wedding dress... more like a cotton summer dress...

First one

Um... what's the look you are going for? I like some of the details on the bodice of the first one, the second seems to come closest to fitting you and the third has me fixated with that flower and I'm pretty sure I just flat out hate the whole dress (even if the flower wasn't black) cause it's got the white trash bag with belt look going on, to my eyes.

The reason I'm asking you what look you are going for is because from the pics it looks like "hide light under a bushel" ... or sack. They aren't really doing much for you, and really they are all wearing you instead of the other way around. So, maybe if you told us what you liked about each and what the look is you are going for that might help.

If I had to pick one... I'd pick the first only because it's clearly floaty and romatic and delicate. But I'm hoping the sample is about 4 sizes too big on you... brcause I do prefer the fit of the second and where it shows you have a waist. And like I said, the third isn't even a contender to me.

Hi Les12,

I like dress #2 better on you because it shows off your waist and bust much better than dress #1 (which is a bit tent-like - you get lost in it)

The flowery belt is too much though - it realy takes over your sillhouette. Is there something a bit smaller that could still give you the pop of texture you want?

They are both nice, but I''m not sure you''ve found "the one" yet.

Definately go with whichever one makes you feel happy and beautiful.

best,

HD

Oh. Wait. The thing with that belt is the second dress but with a belt. Um. NO. No. no. no. Honey trust me, do not wear that, with that dress... in any color. And since it is a close up of the fabric on 2.... I'm in agreement. NIX the whole thing. Just find another option. Something that doesn't scream tent or sack or maternity. You look like you have a lovely petite figure... is there a reason you are trying to overwelm it.

How about you try this one on????

I think you''re going for a natural, ethereal look which is very in style (correct me if I''m wrong). I LOVE this look, and anyone who knows about bridal trends knows that it is a very en vogue look. Both those dresses are a modern takes on a classic empire waist. Think and updated version of Mansfield Park, Pride and Prejudice or any other Jane Austen adaption with the beautiful flowing dresses all with empire waists. I know I''ve seen that first dress somewhere, I just can''t place it. I love number one, but both remind me of several Reem Acra and Claire Pettibone dresses from 2007-2009 collections:
CP Fall 2008
CP Fall 2007
CP
CP Spring 2009
CP Fall 2009
RA Fall 2007
This one is a RA Spring 2008 which reminds me of what you were trying to do with the belt, I know Vera Wang has done similar things with colorful flower belts. I think it''d be pretty in white, and the second dress doesn''t look cheap. It''s very pretty, a lot of people think they know about fashion and fabrics.. if you know what I mean. Just stay true to yourself, pick what you like. Both are beautiful, stylish options that your amazing figure can pull off!

I really like that you''re not going for the same boring type of dress everyone picks. Good luck!

Can I be totally honest? Neither of those dresses are doing anything for your figure, which I think is gorgeous under all that dress. I think I know what look you are going for - flowy, ethereal etc, but those dresses just aren''t doing it for me. I would say keep looking, sorry to be brutally honest.

I'm going to disagree and say that I love that pic of you in #1. Yes, it's not a figure-hugging look, but that's not what you're going for. I've seen that dress and it's lovely. You look ethereal and romantic and feminine. #1!

(I do agree that #2's fabric is not doing it for me.)

I just noticed your quote here about looking better in person. THIS is how your dress photographs, this is how you are going to look in your pics. If you don''t think it looks any good in the pics, then you are likely to be disappointed when you get your wedding album back.

She took those pictures with her phone, they weren''t taken by a professional photographer.

Ditto. I for sure do not look that great in cell phone pictures; however, I hope to look fab in pics on my wedding day; that''s why I pay major bucks for a photographer.

I''d have to agree with Gypsy. If I had to pick one, I''d go with the first, but you have such an amazing figure and it''s totally hidden under those dresses. I''d keep searching.

Did you for one minute think that I was under the impression that she took her wedding photographer with her to try on dresses?

Sure, the lighting and angles will be better with a professional photographer, but even the greatest photog in the world isn''t going to change the shape of a dress!

Lol, I think she likes the shape of the dress. I''m not sure how much you know about photography, but I have a lot of experience with profession portraiture. I think she looks lovely in the dress and it will photograph beautifully

I think my comments have been misunderstood. I never said the dress didn''t/ wouldn''t photograph nicely, I was saying that people shouldn''t get fooled into thinking they are going to love a dress in their wedding day photos, if they don''t like the way it photographs now.

I don''t have a problem with the dress, I am sure it will photograph well, what I was trying to say is be careful with your choice, if you are not loving it now in pics, I don''t see that changing much.

Honey - I understood what you were saying. I was just wanted to mention that it's very hard to judge a dress from quick camera phone shots with not the best lighting. That's all, I really wasn't trying to infer anything or be mean. I guess what I should have said was I could take a picture on my phone and then take another from the same angle with a manual film or even digital camera (so I can control the f-stop, aperture, etc) and end up with a completely different picture. Believe me, things can look completely different/more true to life when to have a professional photographer controlling settings and especially lighting. I think it'd be very hard for anyone to capture even the major details/real look of those dresses with a camera phone. Sorry to go off on the photo rant, I just wanted to explain myself. I have seen many stunning photographs of women in similar dresses. I think she definitely has the body to wear either of those.

les I recognised that Manuel Mota dress immediately - here''s the ad campaign picture of it that immediately popped into my head, it''s gorgeous! It would definitely get my vote over dress 2.

Now, that said, I''m wondering was the sample too big for you as you do seem a little bit swallowed up by it?

I know you mentioned the price is also a concern so I just thought I''d put it out there to have a look at the 2010 Preview on the Pronovias website if you haven''t already. Manuel Mota has a hand in designing some of their main collection and a lot of their dresses for next season are that ethereal almost Regency inspired style. I believe the 2010 collection will be available in salons from mid-September on.

i love number 1!!!! it''s so floaty and beautiful.

yikes! Ok, so no one likes my dresses, haha! Both of the samples were huge on me, so yes the fit is not going to be like this in the end. The first dress is pricey, something I was trying to avoid, and I feel like I would look back on my wedding pics and see giant flowers on my bustline... but I love the flow of it. I wish you all could have been there to see the second dress. My photos are terrible, I know. The whole thing looks kinda like a jcrew wedding gown, simple lines with a great fit and the fabric is a silk shantung, lightweight but perfect for my outdoor reception. I love the belt, and my dream wedding dress is something that no one else has worn or will wear, I just want something special and I don''t necessarily want people to see me in a dress and say, "oh that''s the manuel mota" even though it''s gorgeous! anyway, I know I need to keep looking. I guess I was hoping everyone would like dress 2 so I would get away with the cheaper dress. My style is sort of vintage, etc.... keep the comments coming, I like to read them!

I have to agree with most of the ladies here...if those 2 were my only choices I would go with #1. The second
dress is a no-go for me. Kind of like a big white sack with a belt (sorry - hate to be so negative).

I would keep looking! You look like you have a stunning figure and I know you can get the look you are after
and also flatter your figure at the same time!

Let me first just say that I love the look you are going for. However, I think you can find some much more flattering dresses to achieve your dream look without spending a fortune. You said that you are worried about looking at pictures of the first dress and only seeing flowers on your bust, but if you get that second dress with the belt, you''re going to just see a huge flower in the middle, even if it is ivory! On your petite frame, that flower eats you alive, and I think it overwhelms your figure. I think it would look beautiful, but maybe not for a wedding dress...

Of the two dresses, I prefer the second one. I like that it has a defined waist and silk shantung does photograph better than that when a pro photographer meters light correctly.

Have you thought about dresses that are more form fitting on top with a flowing skirt? The first dress that came to mind is the Pronovias Dango

Another affordable option might be this Maggie Sottero
