Hello all! Newbie here. I have been looking at this forum on and off for about a year now. I love it! I just love rubies! I am looking for an ering with a good size ruby... let''s say from 2.5 - 3.5 ...oh .... in an emerald cut. I would love to set it in a pave setting. I would like to put it on a 1.5mm - 1.8mm pave setting. I''ve seen tons of ruby rings on here ... I just want to find the one I''ve been dreaming of. I''m almost positive I''ll have to have this custom done...that''s fine. I love the Vera Wang pave setting. I looked at some halo and antique settings. I have seen some amazing rings on here and know that all you guys are great help and full of knowledge. Thank you. I just wanna see big ruby emerald cut rings

WHEWWW!

What''s your budget for this? I ask because rubies often aren''t great candidates for emerald cuts because they are often included as heck. Those that aren''t included are very very expensive.

Are you specific about ruby? Or are you open to other red colored stones as well?

I'm not so sure that an emerald cut is a great move with ruby, especially if you want a clean stone. I'd be more inclined to go for a long cushion - you will also be widening the range of stones available.

Rubies are not the most sparkly of stones and really need a great cut to bring them to life.

Budget is also very important. Great colour, clean rubies are generally as much if not a LOT more expensive than a comparable diamond.

One of the best I have ever seen on PS was this one:

It's just over a carat, took 15 months to find and cost $10K:

There is this one at Palagems. It is heat-treated and flux-healed and is only 1.02ct.

Flux-healing would bother me though.

You could give Wink a call and see if he can source you something. (Pala don''t have prices on their website - they are trade only.)

Well my budget is about 5,000 I am dead set on a ruby. Color wise ... I love the pigeon blood red. I''m not a huge fan of the pink or purple hues. I love the emerald cut ... I do agree Pandora II not much sparkle in an emerald cut. I don''t think I''ve seen or made aware of a long cushion before If you can post a pic or two of one that would be great (doesn''t have to be a ruby) I know the size I want is a little big ... I think I wanted that size to make up for the lack of sparkle it would have. I''m sure a 2ct with a great cut would look beautiful.

I will be surprised if you can find a 2ct 'pigeon-blood' for $5k, especially in an emerald cut - unless you are happy to really compromise on clarity. If you do - please come and tell me where, I'll take a dozen!

(Pigeon-blood is not a good term by the way - it VERY over used. True pigeon blood is exceptionally rare, a lot of gemmologists will tell you they have never seen a real one.)

Is there a reason that it has to be a ruby?

A fine red spinel can have amazing colour and clarity and will look like a 'ruby' to most people. Great spinels aren't cheap - but they are not stratospheric like rubies.

Have you read Richard Hughes' book 'Ruby & Sapphire'? Another one you might fine useful is Richard W. Wise's 'Secrets of the Gem Trade.' They are both invaluable.

Here's a red spinel that Stacy posted:

Here''s another cushion cut from www.cherrypicked.com

It''s 1.55ct and is $31,193

Here's an amazing cushion-cut spinel from Palagems (they haven't got any emerald cuts on the site at the moment - but you could probably get them to source you anything.)

"A very special ruby. The picture tells the story. Perfectly proportioned with exceptional color, cut and crystal. A true gem. 8.6x5.9mm"

Up your budget by a whole lot.

Hi,

I am assuming that you are looking for a ruby with no treatment or heat treatment only since your are looking for one for an engagement ring.

To find a 2.5-3.5 carat untreated ruby in a beautiful colour will be hard as they are quite rare. To find one of these in an emerald cut will be even harder, though not impossible, but you may not find one in time for your wedding. To find one within your current budget will be impossible.

I second the others'' opinion that you may wish to consider a spinel (rather than a flux/glass/beryllium treated ruby) for an engagement ring. If however you are open to treated rubies, then you may be able to find some within your budget, but looking for one in an emerald cut may still be difficult.

Good luck in your search!

Hi, Following your "bold and dainty" and your price range, how about this

they have lots of the color you like...but some are "price upon request," which frightens me, but sure is nice to look!

So I saw this the other day... my heart skipped a beat ... I was just happy to see that an emerald cut ruby does exist! But, then I noticed ... all the ruby pictures were the same... why do they do this to us? How hard would it be to post the actual picture of the item you are going/wanting to buy?

... So I''m going to google red spinels and sapphires and see what it gives me. That one posted is amazing. Tulip928 ... I''ve been on NSC to check out the mountings ... I''ll save that link in my favorites to check out that rock every now and then

...okay! Here I go!

Re: Red sapphires... that is a ruby. Sapphires are the Corundum family of gems, and they come in basically all colours of the rainbow and the red variety have been separated out and called Rubies. Each different colour results from a different type of mineral being dominant in the stone, so one mineral makes it red (rubies) and another mineral makes it blue, and another mineral makes it green etc etc. There are indeed some "pink" sapphires on NSC that are very dark and rich looking, like the one Tulip posted, but for whatever reason they don't meet the colour criteria to be called rubies... maybe too much purple undertone? Maybe too light? I am not sure. Anyways, if you wan't a red stone that isn't a ruby, then Spinel is probably your best bet, otherwise you could try to find a "pink" sapphire that isn't quite the true ruby-red colour and save a few bucks that way. Even if it isn't called a "ruby" it is technically still a corundum and hence is just a Ruby by another name!

Good luck, can't wait to see what you get!

That red spinel that Pandora posted is gorgeous. Jeff said he doesn’t have much spinel rough right now, but can source some at the Tucson Gem show coming up if you have an interest in something specific. www.whitesgems.com
