I am working on a little project for myself and was hoping for some guidance. I''d like to purchase a purple stone to be set in a LOGR setting. I prefer a very deep purple stone. Since this is just a fun project, I am hoping not to spend too much on the stone (Ideally I''d like to be under $300, but could go over for the perfect stone). Given the budget, I am thinking I should be looking more at amythests, right? Does anyone have any suggestions of cutters who have great amythests or other purple stones (spinels?) in the deep purple I am looking for?

I''d ask Dan Stair. I think he has a bunch of amethyst rough lying around.

Amethyst is a good choice and definitely in the price range.

You could also look for a spinel or, if you like a dark blue/purple, Iolite.

In that price range you could be looking at several stones.

Amethyst , spinel, scapolite, purple sapphire

It depends on the size of the stone. For it''s size, amethyst is probably the least expensive option in your case. Uruguayan or African amethyst is very beautiful when in deep dark colors.

I''m not sure how deep spinels go (can''t say I ever saw something very saturated), so if you''re after a rich color, amethyst would be best. Iolite can also be pretty spectacular, but they''re not easy to find in fine qualities. They''re also not the most durable of stones, so they''re better suited for pendants or earrings. Purple sapphire is one of my favorite stones, but it''s beauty lies more in the mosaic pattern of different (mostly lighter) shades, than in the richness of color.

Doesn''t Garry Dutton have some awesome Four Peaks Amethyst?

Too eerie NovemberBride! I have the same project going on right now and would suggest Barry Bridgestock. He took over ACstones after Barbara Smigel.

Here is my Amethyst cut by him:

Stone is 1.64ct, measures 7x7mm, and is very much purple

That amethist ring is beautiful!! WOW.. I have to put that on on my list. If I may ask...who did the setting? It''s really unusual and goes very nicely with the stone.

Hey Mochi, I believe that is just a stone holder made to hold the stone temporarily. Basically like a set of tweezers to wear on your hand so you can get an idea of what it might look like in a ring.

Thanks everyone for the advice! I have emailed Dan and Barry to see what they have available.

Love in Bloom - great minds must think alike! Your stone is amazing. We''ll have to compare final products to see how similar they turn out!

LIB: That Amethyst is to die for! Gorgeous!!!

LOL .... I thought it was a ring...

Hi there,

I hate to be so ''new'' (but I am...LOL, this is only my second or 3rd post), but what is LOGR? What does that stand for?

Also, I don''t know what size/shape you were looking for, but I saw this and I think it''s beautiful! :) http://www.acstones.com/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=141&idproduct=2503

Hi! LOGR is Lord of Gem Rings, an ebay vendor who some of us have bought settings from.

Check out my past topics for titles with LOGR in the subject line . . . I think I have about 6 settings from them, and a 3 sided pave band.

LIB, I could have sworn I posted this last night, but your BB amethyst has also prompted me to email Barry. I absolutely adore it, and it''s perfect for the Legacy-esque LOGR setting! I just wanted to thank you for posting your gorgeous purple beauty in here!

Lauren the Partier,

I think we may end up as ring triplets!

Hahahaha! It''s works for me - I think we already have some Garnet triplets around here!!!!!

Did you email Barry last night, as well? He must be scratching his head trying to figure out why we''re all e-mailing him about that stone!

Works for me as well. I love those garnet rings, I actually have a very similar ring from David Yurman that DH gave me as a wedding gift.

Yes, I did email Barry last night as well. I hope he has more of the rough he used, that is the most lovely amythest I have ever seen. Are you planning to use the legacy style setting for this one?

Yes, I have the same exact cut mozambique Tourmaline set in the Legacy style, and it''s my favourite gemstone ever!

The color of that amethyst is incredible

Just curious, what is the origin of that amethyst? Do you know what country it hails from?

Beautiful amethyst, LIB. Absolutely gorgeous!

Not to hijack the thread, but where do you get these stone holders? Thanks.

The amethyst is gorgeous. I too would suggest purple sapphire or purple spinel.

Here''s an unheated purple RC sapphire from Multicolour. A little out of range, but it never hurts to call and ask. Sapphire
Aslo from Multicolour... A portugese oval spinel.

Do you have a particular stone shape or shade of purple you''re interested in?

BTW, that amethyst is jaw dropping LIB.

Thanks so much Mochi, Neatfreak, MMT, Fly girl, MarcyC and Dancingflame.

Tourmaline_Lover, my Amethyst hails from Uraguay.

You are welcome, I just swiped that pic from the gem collections thread. I had been interested in that cut for a while and initially purchased it in a pink tourmaline that just wasn''t for me. When I saw this square amethyst I totally pounced and was awe-struck by the presence of this stone in person. I''m so glad you got the Mozambique tourmaline and set it the way you did. It''s just gorgeous!!!
