Hello to all-- I''''m a first time poster here.

My question is this- I have tracked down a 1.61 carat, VVS1 (near perfect) princess cut (very hard to find true princess cuts vis a vis ''''squarish'''' radiant cut), fancy-intense yellow diamond, GIA Certified. The wholesaler is offering me the diamond at $6500, including a very simple setting (I plan on presenting this to my g/f this weekend, and then for us to both go back and select a custom platinum setting). I''''ve shopped around and this seems like a good deal for that quality of stone (read: it is NOT a color-enhanced/radiated yellow diamond; it is GIA certified and is a true yellow diamond). What are your guys'''' collective thoughts? I am planning on picking it up tomorrow.. I hope she loves it!

Thanks in advance!

Does the GIA say the color distribution is "even"? Is the depth reasonable i.e. reasonable size for 1.6? Does it have real life not just color? With positive answers to these questions, it seems like a good buy.

It seems a bit too good to be true to me...aren''t fancy yellows supposed to be much more expensive than white diamonds? And could you even get a 1.6 white diamond with that clarity for that price?

Maybe I''m missing something about purchasing yellow diamonds...but seems odd to me that it would be that cheap.

1) I will have to check the GIA report tomorrow when I go and pick it up-- but assume the color distribution is even or very close thereto.

2) What is "reasonable depth" for a 1.61 carat princess cut diamond? I will have the exact dimensions tomorrow, so it would be great knowing this going in. He did say it has "excellent symmetry"

3) I assume by "real life" you mean its sparkle/radiance as opposed to a flat, dull looking yellow stone. Judging from the jeweler''s reaction, I believe it does have very good life. Zero flourescence according to the jeweler.

He initially asked for $7500, got him down to $6500 (he''s been in the business for 30+ years, so he''s reputable). He''s also a family friend, so I''m getting a substantial wholesale discount here..

IF ITS TRUE YOUR GETTING A BARGAIN COME TO ENGLAND AND SEE THE PRICES FOR STONE YOU WILL HAVE A SHOCK OF YOUR LIFE WE HAVE TO SUFFER OR YOU HAVE TO MAKE MATES IN THE TRADE

Closest match I fould find given your "specs"; hence it would appear your ring (since it includes a simple setting) is remarkably well priced.

Please post hand shots when you get this jewel!!

cheers--Sharon

It seems MUCH good to be true at $6500. Please make sure to be cautious with this purchase, I would recommend taking it to an independent appraiser for confirmation that it is what they say it is. You''ll spend $100 on the appraisal, but it will well be worth it in peace of mind.

I hope that you''re getting the deal of the century though!

This really sounds too good to be true. Please be cautious and take it to an appraiser before purchasing. I don''t know why it is so cheap.
A FIY yellow should be much more expensive.

Buyer Beware!

The appraisal cost may be quite a bit more expensive. Not every appraiser is experienced in fancy color stones to test the gemologically, which needs to be "positive" before assigning a value. Those who are experienced and equipped usually would charge more than $ 100.00 for a stone over 1 carat.

AGTA Lab is probably the best equipped to analyze the stone.

GIA is very well equipped, but occasionally it's been RUMORED that they miss one that has been HPHT treated.
They do spot check at random on in coming diamonds, but guess this depends on whether it was actually tested for HPHT etc. Perhaps a call with the report number to GIA might confirm what tests they actually did if yo call them.

You could ask the jeweler friend if he is going to the Vegas show. AGTA will have a smaller set up lab there, and he could present the stone next week at the show, if he intends to go.

Something's wrong. That's way too cheap. Are you sure it's not 6500 "per carat"?

True. Irina''s comparable is much more realistic.

Make sure the report isn't missing "intense" and doesn't add "brownish" color modifier?

Together that might result in a difference like this. I can see some sellers that don't see many colored diamonds in a year forget to note (important) details like this.

Make sure that the COLOR is also natural. Even if the diamond is natural, make sure YOU see the report that says that the diamond is naturally yellow and not enhanced. But as Rockdoc mentioned...even then one must take precautions.

Just seems too good to be true.

The price is too unbelivable, just for friendly reference i recently brought one 1.11 princess cut fancy intense vivid, with even saturation, imagine pure lemon with no secondary tints of secondary colour, gia cert, si1 clarity, just the diamond alone cost me singapore dollars $19000 without casting.appx us 11000.and that''s in singapore....

The difference between Intense and Vivid is HUGE!!!!

Gee,

Wonder what happened?

Did the stone turn out to be the bargain of the century, or did the deal not turn out to be "kosher"?

I hope for the best but, as most of us think here - it sounds like there is something "wrong" for that pricing level.

Curious, though.
