I am about to have an empty setting and since orange is the only color not represented in my jewelry box I think the choice is clear!

The setting is a white gold cathedral setting with 3 diamonds (~3 pts) channel set on either side. I''d like a stone between 0.5 - 1.0 ct, and I''m trying to stay away from rounds and ovals (to add a little variety). I''ve been looking at spess and orange sapphires, but most I find are round and oval. If anyone has an idea of where to find an orange stone in a relatively small size that isnt round or oval, please help me out!

Thanks!

Ali

welcome to the land of orange! ovals and rounds seem to be the thing for spessartite garnets. not sure re the mandarins.

Mine will have some ideas, i''m sure.....she, too, adores orange garnets!

can''t wait to see what you find.

where have you looked so far?

Anoher posting about an orange stone and this time it isn''t even by Mine or Movie Zombie! This is becoming frightening! Could it be that orange is the new "in" color in jewelry? (Maybe orange with yellow gold?) ;-)

I usually go for the cool, jewel tone colours. I have a lot of blue, green and purple so I thought something nice and sunny to get me through the impending winter would be nice.

I''ve checked ajsgems.com (there is an interesting pear cut available I''m considering), multicolour.com and been browsing ebay a bit. The laptop with all my gem/jewelry bookmarks died so I have to start over, I know theres places out there but I can''t remember any of them.

I know there are a couple spess fans over here so I was hoping to exploit the superior knowledge of others for my own advantage

Here''s a link to a fine list of gemstone vendors compiled by colored gemstone nut.

Holy hole in the donut Batman! That is a fantastic list. Thank you for posting it Matata. Trying to run searches on this forum for "gemstone websites" was pretty pointless.

spess seems to be cut primarily in rounds and ovals i think to take adavantage of the light refraction. i do have a .69 carat from the ramona mine in southern california though.....but it has quite a bit of color zoning going on....and the shape does not allow the light to play like it does with my 8.18 spess [still working on the setting, folks]. is there a reason you don''t want round or oval?

richard wise still has some spessartite for sale but it may be more carats than you want. see www.rwwise.com

also, there used to be a guy here,i think it was loneminer, that had some spess that he sold to someone in southern california.....i think Mine had contact with him before we bought from Richard Homer.

please correct me if i''m wrong, but i also think i''ve seen some citrine recently that was very very definitely ''orange'' rather than yellow. anyone else think this would be a possible source of orange stone?

The only reason I wanted to stay away from rounds and ovals is that 99% of my jewelry is one of the two, and it would be nice to go with something different. If it''s too hard to find or I have to sacrifice too much of the beauty of the stone for the fancy shape I''ll look at the rounds/ovals (I think I''ve said round and oval more int he last few posts than I have in the last month, oi)

ok, here's my very honest an personal opinion: i LOVE emerald cut color stones, but i wouldn't buy a spess cut as one...wouldn't do the stone justice, in my opinion. with spess have to be careful of color zoning going brown so marquis cut and pear can be difficult but not impossible....its just that i think you have to pay more to keep that zoning at the points from going brown.

i did see a spess cabachon tuesday in my travels. not bad but certainly not the brilliance of a gem cut spess.

another thought: get a round spess and have other stones set around it to give a square shape. perhaps smaller spess and/or diamonds. then set your side stones.

have you seen this: http://www.pearlmansjewelers.com/product.php?DesignerID=46&ItemTypeID=1&ItemID=2701&start=18

he found a square spess somewhere....or had one cut....and a bunch of smaller ones, too!

ETA: none of this really helps as you want to use an existing setting......

What are the dimensions you are looking for?

The only reason the majority of spessartites are rounds and ovals has to do with the shape of the rough stones. They''re often the best shapes for efficient use of the rough, while cutting to proper angles for maximum brilliance. Some of the finest and brighest spessartites are trillions and other custom shapes.

Most spessartites on today''s market are cut in Asia where the cutters often sacrifice brilliance for unecessary weight. The bottoms of the stones are "bellied," adding 15 or 20% more weight, which means more $$ since they''re sold by the carat. I rejected a parcel of otherwise nice stones last week for that very reason.

HEY!! I love this thread!!!!!

MZ!! it is spreading YEAH!!!

AGBF... it is MZ and I''s secret mind control device.. we want people to think in ORANGE!!! Our signal is reaching far and wide!!

I am happy to hear that you are going to use an orange stone. I have a coupla pictures for you in a wide range of ''orange'' colors.. but keep this in mind... asome of them are cool some are icky some are a lot better than the others I have seen. I imagine you do not have to do strictly spess.. you could go for an ''orange'' sapphire as well. I will look for some of those too. I really like the round and ovals better, I think they give a better... appearance than other cuts. Also... carat size can be a bit different than diamonds.. so if you know about what mm that would help... OK here goes...

HERE is a 1.28 Spess from Ajsgems.com

It is very difficult to find spess below 1 carat and even 2 carats for that matter.. most of these are in the low to mid 1 carat range

Can I join in on the orange parade? That EC one is so cool!

May I confess? I don't like the color orange. It isn't that I don't like orange stones; I don't like orange at all. I have used it-when putting together outfits for my daughter when she was younger-but it just doesn't appeal to me. I couldn't have an orange and yellow kitchen or wear an orange stone.

Now, because I want to hang out with you gals, I have to discuss orange stones. Constantly. And, as you have said, it is spreading.

I am only here because I cannot miss out on your company. I thought you should know how much you mean to me ;-).
