Never thought I’d buy an amethyst but I did!

If you bought it from a ‘boutique’ cutter - I’m not sure I would look for pricing comparisons to places that do not carry the same.
I’m not saying that either is inherently better than the other - just I don’t think they can be compared in that way ‘what do they go for’

I’m glad to read you love the stone :)
Hopefully we will get to see your pictures soon. Multiple lightings and indirect/direct too!

Agree with @Rfisher I am familiar with the cutter you bought from, though I haven't purchased from him yet. Honestly buying gemstones is not a financial investment, especially semi precious ones. You won't get your money back if/when you sell, if that's your question. It was only an investment in smiles for when you look at it.

Having said that, I think it's gorgeous and it would make me smile! It's my birthstone.

Thanks, @Mrs_Strizzle. I bought it for fun and enjoyment ;). Not thinking of selling :). Just curious as to pricing as I am truly clueless with colored stones. I have more clue about diamonds.

Awwww, happy birthday whenever that is this month!

Seller is super nice. I asked him about the color range etc and told me I can return or exchange it if I’m not happy with it. I want to keep it. Just need to find the right setting for it.

Here are some pics in front of a window. So hard to take good pics of stones. It’s not exactly as it shows in photos. It’s more pale lilac IRL. Photos make it look more colorless. It is a very light colored stone though. I love the cut and just the hint of color. Please share your thoughts. Love it, hate it, so- so? It’s my very first rose de France.

Another question, do you just bring your loose stones to your local jeweler or send it to an online shop to set or buy the setting online and have local jeweler set it? I’d like an inexpensive white gold setting. Any advice for setting only vendors? Thanks.

As of now, I've always bought the stone and setting separate, then had a local bench set them. So far I've been lucky and my pieces have always fit and nothing got destroyed. But now that I've moved, I'm in the process of finding a new bench who I can trust.

I've acquired settings from ebay (preloved as well as custom), LT/DB, Etsy, and even custom-made from brick-and-mortar stores.

Thanks, @AnastasiaBeaverhausen. I looked a little bit at Etsy but so far, what I’ve seen come with stones already set. I’ll keep looking. I can hopefully find someone locally that’s good and trustworthy.

Very pretty. It looks almost like colorless quartz crystal from your photos, with a tiny touch of lilac or purple. I’m looking forward to what you do with it. I think rose or white gold would make it stand out.

A lot of folks recommend DanielM on Etsy. His prices are quite affordable for custom work. He also sets outside stones. So he's a possible option if you're OK with mailing your stone to a vendor.

I've ordered settings from diamoundmounts (I think this is a US-based store?) and IvyandRose. Just told them the measurements of my stone and they created a custom order for me. I think they might set outside stones as well?

Yvonne Raley from CDR can make relatively affordable settings as well. I think her aesthetic is Art Deco or something though. So customizations are more limited.

Hope this helps!

P.S. how large is your ammy in mm anyways?

Thanks, @AnastasiaBeaverhausen. It’s 9mm.

I wonder if rose gold would bring out the lavender tones ?

I love the cut. I'm a suckered for angles and the photo where you have it laying like a kite is divine. Maybe whatever gold you prefer with v-prongs to protect the edges.

Obviously, this is tiny compared to your stone.

The stone has the flat edges on the corners. I’ll see what DanielM has to say after I send him pics. Thanks.

Since you asked for opinions, and also noted that you would be able to return or exchange the stone, I personally would choose to return (especially given the price point of >$60/carat). The color of the stone is pretty, but typical for a rose de france amethyst. To my knowledge, the color shown in your original photo is not a color that exists in amethyst at all, which is why I was initially confused. If I was expecting a lavender blue and got a near colorless lilac, I would be disappointed. Please be aware that you can get a perfectly lovely rose de france amethyst for very little money. Here's a link and photo for a similar stone I found on ebay for $15. Please don't take offense as I am just trying to be helpful! 3562C6CE-E9B4-4B05-AAD1-78B62384AE6E.png

Thank you so much for your honest opinion, @pokerface. I certainly sounds like I overpaid for the stone if it really should only be $60/ carat. I will email the seller and see what he says. Thanks again.

The price point of rose de france amethyst is very low. In the example stone which I posted above, the price is under $5/carat. Unless you have a truly exceptional stone or a specialty cut I can't imagine paying anywhere near $60/carat.

Thanks, @pokerface. I looked up a number of rose de France stones that are loose and set and prices vary quite a bit but nowhere did I find loose stones and rings from what seem to be reputable places at $5/carat. I can’t imagine all the jewelry stores selling rings at hundreds of dollars to thousands with a $5/ carat stone. I’m so confused now.

Unfortunately, many many jewelers and jewelry stores take advantage of the fact that most people are uneducated about gem pricing. Quartz (in virtually all varieties, including amethyst) is abundant, even in large sizes. Off the top of my head, I believe multicolour.com sells amethyst at around $10/carat, and they are definitely reputable. The fact is that quartz is an inexpensive gem, and dealers that choose to specialize in ruby/sapphire/emerald may not sell quartz at all because it is not in the same price range. I am sure if you asked PS to recommend some good, fairly-priced options for rose de france amethyst, some others with more vendor knowledge than me would step up to the plate. :)

Unfortunately it seems quite possible. I read that a "finished" ring will sell for more than a semi-mount. Which is why vendors would at least pop a CZ or something in it rather than leave the setting empty... Quite often I see a ring worth <$500 being on sale for >$1000 just b/c it comes with a gem.

Gemselect has a whole bunch of rose quartz. Maybe start there? This one is 4.9ct and under $25.
