Well i finally got my Kindle  it arrived Thursday and ive been busy showing it off to anyone who'll listen! only downloaded one book so far (complete works of Jane Austen) but im going to get into it in the next week or so. Its sooo small and the screen is so clear!! i couldnt believe it...

I took a couple of pics, i thought for anyone thinking of buying one it might be useful? and i thought it might help to compare to the older one, though id guess its hard to tell the difference without being able to compare directly.

oh and many thanks to the Pscopers who answered all my silly questions about kindles, esp Tgal :wavey:

im getting an Elizabeth David cover and will post when it arrives...

Yay!

I ordered mine in graphite, but it's not expected to ship for another couple weeks. I also have the US Kindle 2, so hopefully I can do a comparison later. I'm SO happy they got rid of the joystick though!

Glad you like it! :appl:

You got it! Isn't it so much fun! And ooooh, I like how they've streamlined the side buttons. And is that a touch pad of sorts on the bottom?

I downloaded several more free books yesterday. I love free books.

I got mine a week ago. Well, it is my daughter's birthday present and she loves it. I'm fine with my Kindle 2 I got in May. I like both models. I got my daughter the one without the 3G and it works just great, and is so affordable. She has a green leather cover for hers and she will be looking for a skin for it as well. :appl: Best gadget EVAR!

Totally the best gadget EVAR  :appl:

April, no its not a touch pad really...the four sides of it go up down right and left, and the centre is equivalent to ENTER. Its funny how conditioned i am by technology, sometimes i find myself going to touch the screen, and people ive shown it to have done the same!

I ordered one about 3 weeks ago, and I can't WAIT until I get it!!

So psyched for the free books and the Wiki access. Woot woot!!!

How exciting!!! My husband surprised me and ordered me one but I'm still waiting for it to arrive. :(( I can't wait to use it!

Congratulations! My husband loves his Kindle. I went for the Sony Touch and like it as well.

I always thought the Kindle was super expensive, but I just looked it up on Amazon and it's really reasonable! Heck, maybe I'll even have to get one someday ...

I'm still torn. I love books. And aren't downloads of new books like $12.00? Cheaper than a new hardcover, sure, but not a paperback... Meh.

I was against these at first, b/c I like the pages of books... I like what they are. But.....

WANT!!!!!!!!!

I figure books that I love and will reread (like classics, and good literature and non fic) I can buy later in nice editions, and only use up space on those.

Kindle will let me take books anywhere and everywhere.

I've had mine for about 6 months now, have downloaded about 12 books, and wonder how I ever got along without this awesome little gadget!!

I love books - non-fiction mostly - and have so many bookshelves in the house that DH is beginning to tell me I have to get rid of some. Get rid of books?!?! He must be crazy...... LOL I think I'm going to go through them little by little, and those that I want to keep I intend to purchase the Kindle version. Unfortunately, some of those I've looked for so far are not available on Kindle. Lucky for me!!

Sad to say, but I've never even seen one. Does reading from it for a long period of time cause eye strain? Is it hard to go back and find a certain section of the book if you want to re-read something? Pros/Cons? Just curious....maybe one of these days I'll enter the 21st century!

Yenny - let me try to help as best I can. I have the iphone app. I don't find that my eyes are strained any more than reading an actual book. Also, mine holds the spot you are at in the book, even when you go to the main menu or access another book, it holds your spot. Hope this helps!

Hey Yenny,

I can help though I'll have to keep it short since I'm on my phone. I've had the Kindle 2 for over two years now. I'm upgrading to the Kindle 3. I love my Kindle so much. I'm a big hardcopy book fan too but mu lifestyle as a student really didn't make it conducive to have a ton of books (I donated two gigantic suitcases full to goodwill when I left Chicago and donated 5 more boxes here at home to the library). I have over 200 books on my Kindle. SO much easier.

I read for hours on end including sunlight and lowlight conditions. No eyestrain at all. Totally comfortable - the e-ink really helps. I can't read on a computer screen for an extended period but the Kindle is totally different.

The con is it is harder to flip back to a place in time like with a hardcopy book. That is my one irritation.

Tons of pros. So much capacity for books, instant gratification for getting books, I have my entire e-book collection on hand so I can reread whenever

Oh no~ Are they really that expensive? The Kindle 3 was on my birthday list (November), but not if they are super expensive. Right now I'm buying used books off of Ebay and they are really affordable! They just all take up too much room!

I thought I would chip in with some pictures of my graphite Kindle 3... I love it! I am a first time Kindle owner, and so far I think it is just great. I also bought the apple green Amazon cover for it. I love that as well. Really sturdy, really good quality. Without further ado...

Here shows what a page of a book looks like on it. Wonderful contrast and sharpness (you can't quite tell because resizing the picture made it a little blurry)... it's easier on the eyes than an actual book! I am readying The Girl Who Played With Fire.

I'd compare the thickness of it to, I dunno, 25 sheets of computer paper.

Thanks for the pics Fuzzers! You and I got the exact same cover/color combo! :)

I got mine on Aug. 30th and I am LOVING it!!! I went with the white one and have been very happy with it! I also got the lighted cover in pink...I love it as well! Very very happy with my Kindle! Thanks to everyone who answered questions and gave feedback on the thread regarding the K3!

Mine came today! And my cover! Yay!

I opted to get the Wi-Fi version. It was handy having 3G all the time but it's not super necessary for my lifestyle. And I got the regular Amazon cover without the light. The light is really cool but I didn't want the extra bulk, and I didn't like that the light didn't give an even spread (stronger on the upper right corner). Plus I have a booklight that I like. So far, loving it. It's super small, even with the cover, and I love the graphite color.

I just placed my order today. The Kindle will be white and the case will be burgundy, with a built in light. I have loved my Kindle 2 and am giving it to my DH. We will be able to share books, which is a great feature. The new Kindle is on back order, but should be available in about two weeks. I so excited. I don't go anywhere with my Kindle.

I ordered the Kindle 3 to replace my Kindle 2, hoping I'd get it before I left for Costa Rica (the extended battery life sounded great for that). Of course it came the day *after* I left, lol. But it was waiting for me upon my return, yay! I love the smaller size. It fits in my favorite purse better. And the quieter page turn buttons? Awesome. I was definitely annoying my cousins at night in our hotel room at Arenal with my older K2, you don't realize how clicky those buttons are until it's dead quiet and it's not your spouse you're bugging per usual :wink2:. Had to cut my nightly reading-in-bed-and-thwacking-myself-in-the-head sessions short.

The lighter weight of the K3 will be nice for that too, I do whack myself in the forehead with the thing regularly at night, falling asleep and *thwap*, there's my Kindle to the head... again. Yes, I'm ridiculous. And when mom and I were sharing a room she would drop her book on the floor about three times, I'd smack myself with the Kindle repeadedly and then we'd call it a night... I see where I get it, no doubt  So points for somewhat more painless head smacking, check.

I like the black color. A lot. I hated the white Kindle even with the vinyl covers I could put on it, because some white would always show and I'm a dork like that.

I got the book cover this time, finally, because I am a huge breaker-of-stuff and this is my, ahem, fifth Kindle, not that I'm counting. I think a hard-cover really is required to protect my Kindle from me, heh, and the smaller size of the K3 frightens me a smidge that way. Typically they're pretty sturdy little suckers but after about the fiftieth drop to the hardwood floor I did break the first one under warranty, the 11th month I owned it actually. They replaced it free, which was awesome, but the replacment didn't work when I got it. The replacement replacement was great until I dropped it into the bathtub when my cat fell two stories and broke his hip, I freaked and dunked the Kindle and didn't find it in a puddle for hours after all that drama. So I replaced it myself because I *knew* that was my fault for sure (#4, check) and that one I just passed on to DH. Still works just fine, though it did get a bit bent at the bottom after a trip down the hardwood stairs a month or so ago, which may or may not have involved a martini or three. (Ooops.)

The extended battery life on the newest Kindle is so worth it for me. I use mine so much that within months the batteries don't last nearly as long as they ought to, so this one is *great*. And I like the way they changed the four way mouse thingy. I was wayyyyy too tempted to unconciously fiddle with the one on K2, and make it loose and weird consequently.

The better contrast is instantly noticeable too. Which I like too, easier on the eyes.

LGK you're back! Pictures? How was Costa Rica? And what did you end up reading? :)

Hey Blackpaw! That's totally cool you're loving your new toy.

Yep I'm back! I'm wiped out still, and VERY glad to have the day off today. CR was lovely, I didn't kill off any family members- a family friend it was a near thing but I behaved :halo: - and I'm really glad to see the husband and kittehs. I'm silly and NEVER take pictures, at least with the crew I went with (mom, two of her sisters, two cousins, and a family friend) because they're all picture-taking lunatics and it puts me off it, lol. OK I have one photo on my phone of Arenal, which was the coolest place we stayed. The two cousins are geologists- in fact one has his masters in vulcanology- so they were over the moon to be able to stay at a hotel on the side of an active volcano. It is *very* active, and literally a smidge over a mile away... you get to see bright orange lava flows at night, big rumbling booms etc. The first night cousin #1 did us a volcano dance when it erupted, it was cute she was soooo excited.

Oh and we saw a UFO at Arenal (meaning literally it was flying, and totally not a plane, star, planet or satellite). There was this super bright light in the sky one night there, a bit to the left of the volcano- it seemed fixed in the sky and didn't move like the stars did and was about 20x brighter than any star. And it stayed in one place all night, I kept checking like a dork. It had this halo of light around it. Comet? Can a comet be super bright for only one night? I didn't find anything on any news sites about it, but I was using a gimpy Costa Rican computer that hated me and I haven't bothered to look again yet... We asked my aunt (who is Costa Rican) about it later and she said there were *tons* of UFO sightings near Arenal, which was interesting.

I downloaded The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, since everyone I know has been talking about it/ reccing it, and failed to read it. I reread Four Past Midnight (it has the Langoliers and I wanted to read that one on the plane because I'm nuts), The Red Tree by Caitlin Kiernan (which I'd been saving special, since I loooove her books and in fact I had the paper copy which I gave to my mom to read on the plane back), Murder of Angels by Caitlin Kiernan, which is like my favorite book ever, and a couple of old Mercedes Lackey books which I'm embarrassed to admit and good lord they read like particularly bad cliche fanfic, but I still reread them because I wanted something super easy on the plane back. (Apparently they're geared for 12 year olds, which was about the age I was when I read them and loved them, go figure- nothing wrong with that, I just wished they'd held up better and been a little less cheesy.) And I think that's about it? I might be forgetting something in there.

Ok I totally wrote a novel here myself. With extra parentheses. And I haven't even had coffee yet. Eek!

In case anyone hasn't seen but would be interested, there are free Kindle apps for Iphone and PC. I downloaded the PC app until I get my Kindle at Christmas. You can download all the same books on the app.

It's making my life easier b/c now I can read The moonstone on a bigger screen than my phone.

:appl: :appl: for all the new kindles!

RS, im keen to see yours, i never noticed an option for built in light and im interested in how it looks/works.

Still no cover for me :(sad i ordered it at the start of july, of course then at the last minute there was the switch to the Kindle 3, so some delay is expected, but i had hoped to have it pretty soon after the kindle 3 shipped....i want to take it all about with me and show it off :praise:
