Hello All!

I am considering a new project, a Halo'd Yellow Sapphire... I am working with Mark at BE, and wanted to get your take on this...I am not really familiar with colored stones, and while I would LOVE a Yellow Diamond, it's not in the budget. I am looking at a 3.5-4ct... and haven't yet decided on a cut yet? I know I will not get the sparkle factor, I'm pretty open to the cut, so if you have any suggestions on what you think looks best and why? Thank you!!

Finewatergems lists 4 new untreated yellow sapphires in their latest mail drop, and they all look very nice and sparkly to me (I like the 2.67ct one the most for its shape and colour:

I also like this one from Jeff Davies, as the colour is more intense, however, it is heated:

Good luck with your search and project, can't wait to see the finished article.

I do not wear yellow anything except as a splash amongst other colours, and do not have a yellow sapphire halo ring, sorry.

DK :))

DK- Thank you!!! I adore the shape of the 2.67, love the color too!! I just wish the dimensions were larger. I have a 2.5 ct for my OMB Diamond Engagement Ring and it's much larger? Is this typical of CS, do you know? Very interesting! Thank you for the help!

I believe it has something to do with the refractive indexes of CSs, requiring them to be cut deeper, otherwise they would display a window, hence they are smaller face up compared with diamonds.

Also, different CS has different density, e.g. Sapphires are denser than diamonds, hence 1ct of Sapphire will be smaller in volume than 1ct of diamond.

Feast yourself on some bigger stones at AJS Gems:

Different stones with different RIs have to be cut at different angles that are best for that RI. The angles vary depending on the type of stone.

Density is actually the biggest factor when it comes to face up size. Tourmalines and diamonds are less dense than sapphire and spinel, for instance, so diamonds and tourmaline will have more volume (and therefore face up size) than sapphires and spinels of the same carat weight.

I'd shop by dimensions rather than carat weight. That's pretty standard over here in CS Land.

Frekechild- thank you! This is a whole new world fo me, and I'm excited to jump in! Thank you!! So I guess I should say I'm looking for something in the 9x11 range?

Diamond (3,52) and gem spinel ( 3,6 +/-) are in the same density range - a 1 ct diamond has a larger faceup course you have flatter angles and so a larger diameter.

A bit math.... :D

For an oval ....

weight in carat = mm x mm x mm x density x 0,0020

mm and density -->type for example 7,00 in the calculator

Helps to find the right size for a setting.

Thank you, Marlow! Yes, very complex!

HI:

A PS'er , Htabby, has a halo/yellow sapphire...it is in this thread:. Incidentally, in the same thread, right about a picture of htabby's sapphire is a golden beryl ring...

And for reference, Catmom (Michelle) has gorgeous yellow diamonds in halo's that would provide a useful reference.

PS Roger Dery has several yellow sapphires on his site, worth a peek:

Aww thanks Sharon!!!

This is a lemon yellow sapphire that I owned for awhile. It's now back with it's original owner (long story - she missed the ring...lol).

That is stunning! Thank you for sharing! Do you happen to remember the dimensions?

I'm not sure you are going to get everything you want when looking for a coloured stone. It is difficult enough to find the right colour, size, treatment, budget and etcetera that often times, the shape or cut has to take a back seat unless one is prepared to search for months for the right stone. Also, due to the other limitations mentioned above, go by the mm size rather than carat weight because the stone can face up really small in order to preserve colour or work around some other factors. I prefer to have a specific colour in mind first and then go from there.

The stone was 9 x 9 mm. I think the ct wt was 4+ but I don't remember for sure. The sapphire ended up being lattice diffused, despite her jeweler swearing it was only heated. After I got an AGL cert on the stone, we did some back and forth and she took the ring back, even though some time had passed. It ended up being a win win for both of us, because even though it was a gorgeous stone, I bought it being assured it was heat only and it had been her engagement ring, so she wanted it back for sentimental reasons. She initially sold it because she wanted a ring she could wear everyday. The setting was hand made by her jeweler and in truth, it was not a well made ring. It was very fragile and the melee popped out easily. She ended up having the stone reset in a somewhat simpler halo by David Klass. She sent me some photos, but I don't have her permission to post.
