I have always wanted to reset my diamond (Secretly!) on my engagement ring onto different prongs. Personally I don''t like how high it is set. I don''t mind a higher set diamond, but it looks like oddly high. And for some reason I don''t like the style of the prongs. I was thinking before the wedding (3/21/2009) to have my diamond reset into different prongs, but keep the same setting.

On average how much is it going to cost to get new prongs and have the diamond reset? I believe the prongs are in white gold and that''s what I would get. Also, what do I do with the old prongs? Obvioulsy they are gold that can be melted down, would the store credit me for the cost of the gold?

No, they won''t credit you on the cost of the gold. You are talking about such a tiny bit anyway. Can you show us the front view so we can see how the head is attached? The stone doesn''t look all that high from the side.

I just had my mom''s diamond reset in her original setting ... had to change out the head and replace it with a new on .... It only cost just a little over $100. I think that this was a fairly simple job given the type of setting so it might get marginally or significantly more expensive if it gets more complicated.

Would you consider changing the entire setting?

Good luck!

I don''t know what your options would be since it looks like your prongs are part of the ring, not a replaceable peg-head like some settings are. I would love to see more pics of the top and from the front/back view. Its a pretty setting!

My mom recently had her ring pretty much rebuilt - for around $350ish, she had a new platinum head put on, her set taken apart and then re-soldered together because it had been badly soldered about 5 years ago, and the back of her ring completely redone with new gold (since after 25 years, it had gotten fragile and eventually split). Unfortunately, I have no idea what the breakdown of the parts/labor there was in all of that, but I think the new head was about $100-50 of that.

Around the same time, I asked what it would take to have my prongs redone in platinum (in my wg setting, the ring is fluid with the prongs). My jeweler said it''s a really easy change and quoted about $60 - I don''t know if that includes labor? I would think so, as it really is a tiny, tiny amount of metal.

HTH!! :)

I don''t have any pictures at work, but I will post some when I get home later... The prongs are like the V prongs and it just seems like the diamond is floating, but not really in a good way.... back to work!

My mom originally had a white gold 4 prong Tiffany style setting, and one of her prongs broke. She had a local jeweler put her diamond in a brand new 6 prong setting to be more secure, and she told me she only paid $80! (I''m considering taking some of my jewelry to him to be reset, since his pricing is so good.)

i can''t chime in on the cost but the stone doesn''t look like it''s sitting oddly high at all (at least not from the side).

need too see the front before we can give you an idea on cost.
The days of $40 heads mounted is a memery for a while until gold settles down.

I got home from work and took some more pictures from a different angle. It seems that with the prongs the diamond is set in it can''t be set lower. I know for a fact the prongs are soldered in. When my FI bought the ring and had the diamond placed in the ring, they set it in a 6 prong instead of a 4, and he had them change it.

I like a higher set diamond, but it gets caught on things. I do get the occassional, "Wow your ring is set high! Doesn''t that get caught on things?" or "well, your diamond is set much higher than mine...." THe comments don''t bother me, but from the first day I received the ring, I noticed it.

Any thoughts?

Not the greatest picture, but here is my ring with my wedding band. We are getting married March 2009.

When FI mangled two of my prongs a few months ago, it had to go for emergency surgery.

They had to totally reset the stone, and because I have pave up the prongs it was not easy to redo.

In the end, they reformed the prongs and reset the stone 1mm lower in the setting so they had a bit more length of platinum to work with.

They did a great job and the ring looks totally the same - but I have noticed that it doesn''t seem to ever knock against things anymore.

It cost $140 for the whole thing - I took it to a very, very good jeweller and it came in at $100 less than the quote they gave me at the beginning.

blueyes, I don''t know about the prongs, but I think your set is beautiful! Very classic and classy. Did you pick out the wedding ring after getting the e-ring? I love it when the guy is thoughtful enough to match the two beforehand, when most only think about the one with the diamond then realize later that it''s really hard to find a band that looks good with the ring they chose.
