Ooooh that is some pink! Love the color and the cut!

Fantastic color and stone..well done cell!!!

Wow, what a gorgeous color! And how on Earth do you take such gorgeous photos??

I lied. I just went to look at my stone in the light and your stone is much prettier! I had false memories of the color of my stone :P

OMG, it''s sooo gorgeous! Lively color, nice cut & size.

It''s beautiful! Now, call me crazy but I''d so bezel this, to amplify the color saturation and bring it closer to the medium-dark level of fine rubies. But that''s just me, and we all like different things. Enjoy this project, I''m sure it''ll turn out great!

Gorgeous color! I'm looking forward to comparison shots and seeing how you end up setting it :)

It''s gorgeous! Can''t wait to see what you''re going to do with it.

Very pretty!

Very very lovely.

Cellantani,
Brace yourself because I’ve taken pictures of my new rubellite today. GASP! I’ll start a new thread on it shortly.

I hope I don''t get stomped on the head for saying this, but it looks like a nice Mahenge. How does it compare do you think? I have a Bob rubellite that I brought to a gem show that looked pretty much identical to some Mahenge''s I saw there.
Funny thing is, I''d wondered about UV because it really looked similar to my Mahenge in sunlight. The rubellite is definitely more red, especially in incandescent light (shown here). I''ll try to get some comparison shots tomorrow with the spinel.
Now for me the photo attached to this comment was THE money shot! Showed tons of red (which is how I personally judge a great Rubellite).

I''m confused though .......... sorry ........ I don''t know how a great Rubellite can be confused with a Mahenge? For me, Rubellites should be red not pink (hence the name meaning Ruby like). If they''re pink then they''re a Pink Tourmaline????? Seriously confused on the coloured stone forum at the mo! None of my Rubellites glow in sunlight either.

I adore your new stone Cellantani and it shows the right amount of red to be a yummylicious Rubellite!

Seriously, Cell, I''m sitting on my hands so I won''t send Bob Kast an email asking for one. I keep coming back to this thread because your rubellite is so gorgeous.

Heheh, I know how you feel, Indy - I''ve had to sit on my hands lots of times! He really did a nice job on this one, and I''m glad you like it too.

Thanks LD - I do understand your comments, and while I would never actually confuse this rubellite with a Mahenge (for the reasons you mentioned, plus a few others), it did seem to really pop in direct sunlight, instead of going dark like many other gems. On the other hand, Chrono''s pear Mahenge is more red than pink to me.

When I went to the last gem show, this one dealer had many $2k/ct Mahenges. They were slightly purplish red, and similar to my tourmaline in color. I think the term rubellite is subjective to many people. Some would consider my stone a rubellite and some a hot pink tourmaline (although it does shift to a more red color in some lighting). It's slightly purplish red, like some Mahenges though. I've read definitions of rubellite all across the web, and even on different forums where gemologists and those in the gemological field have disagreed on the exact term and the specifics of the gem. I don't consider a hot pink tourmaline that is strictly pink, a rubellite, but I know some people that do. Even on AJS website, they have many hot pink tourmalines listed as rubellites.

Here are some comparison shots with a little .5ct rubellite and a pink Mahenge spinel. It was really difficult to photograph all 3 together, because they each sit at different angles, and when one stone would look good, the others seemed to go dark.

Direct sun. They''re all at an angle, but you can still see the differences in color.

Indirect natural light. Rubellite looks much sleepier than the spinel, but isn''t spinel a type 3 gem?

Gorgeous, gorgeous! I love the trio pics.

love your rubellite cellentani!

Great comparison pictures. Thank you, Cellantani. I can see that the spinel and tourmaline show different properties even though one might think the colour is somewhat similar. The Mahenge is very crisp and sparkly due to the cutting design and higher RI. However, the rubellite is beautiful in its own way as well, as the colour just glows.

Very pretty - great color too.

I figured I might as well add to my last thread, because after getting that cushion rubellite from Bob Kast, I asked for a small pair of rounds - here''s what I was thrilled to receive:

These are not as red as the cushion, but are an amazingly bright, saturated fuchsia - I''m in LOVE!
