I am looking at Montana sapphires on Mountain Momma and have no idea which are good stones. Can anyone be kind enough to look at these three and talk me through what is good or bad about them? Much appreciated!

#1 and #3 look like they have windows,(hole in the center)and are poorly cut.
#2 looks more sparkly and lively than the other two and is a prettier color in my opinion.

I'd agree with @livannie and i would also keep looking around, sapphires are surprisingly hard to chose.

What exactly are you looking for? Color? Size? Shape? Budget?

Depending what your answers are, my honest answer might be none of the above.

Thank you for the responses!
Sabrina, I am indeed sensing sapphires are hard to choose.
Sparklies, I am hoping for a blue-green or teal sapphire for a ring. Round or cushion. Around 6mm, perhaps?
As for budget, that is where I need my education.

Hopefully this will help.

I bought a darker teal sapphire for $480 usd (I am Aussie). It's 1.61 carats, 6.8mm.

Here is the thread where you can see all the pictures in different lights.

It's from Australia and obviously isn't a Montana sapphire (I gather the Montanas are more pricey) but hopefully this will give you a bit more information.

Earths treasury has a lot of sapphirres in that color idea also, not just Montana but also Umba, Nigerean, and Australian. :)

I'd get in touch with these two lapidaries and ask if they have anything that would work for you. They're both extremely nice, have great policies and their material is fairly priced.

Oh, and I'd also browse Blaze's site (as he mines Montana sapphires!): https://blaze-n-gems.myshopify.com/collections/faceted-montana-sapphires

Mellowyellow, your stone is so very pretty, and your ring turned out beautifully!
Sabrina and sparklies, thank you for the resources!

There is a useful pinned post that will help you assess a stones’ quality. It’s the ‘New to gemstone buying?’ one, and it’s a good read.

I have two little Montanas from Blaze and they are lovely. His descriptions are better than his photos. My two looked barely green in the photo, he described as light teal. They were exactly light teal, not watery or too light. And the fire. He'll usually take more photos for you if you can be patient between runs to his sapphire claim!

Here are a few.

Too many to choose from!

Thank you!

I have a teal sapphire from Dana Reynolds (mastercutgems.com) I am very happy with. He may have more gems than are listed on his web site. Good luck with your search!
