I asked James Meyer about an estimate for setting my fab pink tourmaline and I got this very polite but makes-me-sad response:

" At this point, I have such an amount of orders for pieces that I will be unable to take on any re-setting work. And, I am working on new pieces for my website inventory.

That leaves available pieces that I already have made up on my site, or custom orders using my own stones that can be made after consultation with the customer."

Just an FYI for everybody. . .

Maybe he''ll be available to reset someday?

I''m not sure I fully understand his reply; does that mean that he will no longer make settings for customers who bring in their own stone unless the stone happens to fit an existing mounting that he is offering on his website?

I took it to mean he wouldn''t set a customer''s own stone. The stone has to be one he''s sourced, is my take on it . . .

Oh, that''s sad news to me too as I''d hope to have him bezel set one of my coloured stones one day. I take it that this also applies to diamonds too then.

Wow! I''m stunned!

I''m wondering if he''s not making enough money by creating pieces with others stones. One of the things I was always amazed by were his reasonable prices.

Hmmmm...........

I think that he may be simply swamped with work, too. I sent him Gene''s ruby over 6 m. ago. He asked me if I could wait since he had so much work with e-rings, and I said, certainly. I am still waiting although we are communicating and he is slowly working at it. He mentioned something about planning to decrease the amount of the work he does. It was a while ago, too.
I do not mind him taking his time to work at my ring. I just wish I bought a bigger stone and sent him - it was my first try, and if he doesn''t take customers'' stones, I may have no chance to set the sapphire I just ordered...

well, i''m guessing another service provider has made a business decision that is appropriate for him......

i read his response as business is good and he does not need to accept customers stones and/or settings to remain in business. he''s up front re wanting to work on his own inventory which he has or will have up for sale. seems reasonable to me. time = $ and the amount of time and effort put into working with customers who want to provide their own stones and/or settings just may not be cost effective.

That''s a pity since he does such refined work. I''m glad his business is going well, but I wish he would take owner''s own stones for setting.

I am glad that he is doing so well that he doesn''t need to accept outside work. I''m happy I had him set my sapphire. I have one more stone I was thinking of sending to him but I guess it will have to go to someone else.

From the wording, it doesn''t sound like a permanent thing - at least to me.
It seems he is just being upfront about his priorities and work load.

Perhaps he will be able to set client''s stones again in future..
He does source very pretty stones for his own inventory though.

I had always found it disappointing CM won''t take outside stones as a rule, I hope the same doesn''t become true for Jim

When I spoke to Jim when I received my ring, he mentioned he was going to set only the stones he sourced. It sounded like he was busier than he wanted to be. I don''t know if it''s final or not. For the stone lovers and collectors on this forum this is a huge bummer.
