Novice in need of advice for (hopefully soon to be) fiancée's engagement ring! Total budget ~$40k

Sorry to hear about the inclusion. Since you have maxed out all your constraints it sounds like this is the best option. If she wants a blingier look later you could add an eternity band. The design from VC is gorgeous! Love the triwire and proportions of the sidestones. A band won’t sit flush with it, some people like a little air gap and some don’t, it’s just something to consider.

So it cannot be lower than a VVS? Would the inclusion be visible if it were a VS?

Oh such a good point about the band - yes, I would like the wedding band to sit flush if possible. I suppose that's a slightly tricky one to balance!

Unfortunately I know she wouldn't want lower than a vvs.

Disaster has struck! The rough has an inclusion that would bump the clarity down to a vs1 (which tragically won't work). We can cut around it but will drop to 1.75 (presumably with a corresponding price drop). I'm waiting to hear back...

In other news absolutely gorgeous inspirations, thank you so much. I think definitely a platinum band (she's a winter). VC sent me an inspiration piece that I like the simplicity of the setting for:

Love this setting! Everything Victor does is so good; the proportions and flow and all else are going to be complete perfection.

And ahhh, I'm sorry to hear about the issue with the inclusion! It sounds like you already know for sure that she would prefer a 1.75ct/VVS clarity stone over the 2ct/VS1 stone. (But if there is any doubt I might try and confirm that!)

what kind of inclusion? I have a VS2, and a lot of inclusions you cannot even see under 10-30x loupe. Black carbon, wisp, large feather and cavity prob more problematic

Natural stone often comes with something unpredictable. 1.75ct is still a very good size plus saving you some budget. However, I, too, suggest to rethink about the VS inclusion. VS1 is still very very clean, a D VS1 2ct vintage cushion with precision cut is still nothing less than a dream stone for many and rare!

As other poster suggested, do let us know what the inclusion is~

Unfortunately I know she wouldn't want lower than a vvs.

Did she say something specifically about why she only wants VVS or IF, or conversely why VS is unacceptable to her? Mind-clean is one aspect to consider, but VS is eye clean and the inclusions are only visible under 10x loupe magnification.

Agree with the other posters that the "right" type of inclusion and it being in favourable location might make the inclusion nearly invisible. Did VC mention anything about the cost difference of doing the 1.75 D VVS compared to going for the 2ct D VS1? Staying under the 2ct threshold should provide some savings, but I don't know how that would compare to the additional prr-ct premium for the VVS clarity.

Yes it’s really a saving to be honest. More than 10k as OP mentioned early in this thread provided both are VVS, yet it’s not terribly exceeding his original budget if my memory is right.

MMM right. But also that was with it being a 2ct and VVS, so I wonder what the difference would be now that it's estimated to come out as only a 2ct VS

Oh I got you~ wanna know it too!

Thank you so much! I'm very lucky ☺️

I'm now thinking about how to set the stone - I'm thinking a 1.8 platinum band (no tapering) with two side stones (not pear, I think they make my SO think of tears!), which I think had also better be vintage style so there's not a harsh contrast. Wondering how best to set the cathedral so it's elegant, personalised, and can fit a wedding band comfortably beside it... I never dreamed before diving in there would be so much more to all this than they tell you (well, me - clueless looking man) on the high street!

I’d leave measurements of the shank and whatnot to VC and it get too in the weeds.

Has she seen any of these high colored antique cuts IRL? Antique cuts definitely reflect light differently than modern round brilliants. Lots of people actually prefer a lower colored antique cut stones AFTER HAVING SEEN THEM IRL. I know people think that buying super high color and clarity are everything but after seeing them next to each other in person... I think it may be worth taking her to Victor's office to compare them before you commit, if it is still an option given there is a snag in the cutting of the current stone. For the record, I love H-J in antique cuts, but love D-E in modern round brilliants.

I'm so sorry all! I think the notifications started going into spam, else I'd have replied sooner. To make up for it I bring news!

We were able to cut around the inclusion better than anticipated =)2 We have a 1.921ct vvs2 ideal everything. Here's the AGS report! Anything any of you eagle eyed diamond experts would point out? It looks lovely to me.

This all for $32,500. Luckily I'd already wired the vast majority over before the pound crashed!

I'd love some comments on the light performance - I've seen expected light performance videos for cushion brilliant, but less for antique. Here it is!1664870781480.png
Finally here's a video of the diamond itself.:

I'm planning on pairing it with a couple of 0.4 ct OEC side stones!

Sorry all for the wait, but I think it was worth it (: Thank you all again for all your help and comments!

Stunning!

Wow - that is outrageously beautiful! Congrats on a job well done!

Please come back with pictures for us once it is set!!

Congratulations! It’s absolutely gorgeous!

Looks lovely! Excited to see the final (super dreamy) outcome, and very excited for you that the stone came out much closer to the 2ct than the 1.75ct :)

Hey again!

Exciting news - it's finally set! The video is here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/6h863dtl7wx3eq9/VC-setting.mov?dl=0

It's beautiful and I love it, but I was wondering a couple of things:
1. Are the prongs slightly wonky?
2. I asked a couple of times if we could go with rounded prongs - presumably it's ok even at this stage to re-request? Any advice?

Thanks again so much everyone still reading!

Beautiful!
1. Wait until you see it in person. It is too hard to tell from the angle of the camera in the video. If it is wonky I’m sure VC will fix it.
2. I would give VC a call right away to ask about any changes to the prongs before they ship.

That is a fabulous ring!!! Congratulations on your excellent choice!

1. The prongs are top notch, top quality!!! I've never seen Victor do wonky prongs!
2. Rounded prongs? Like the ones jewelers do when they don't have the skill to make pointed prongs??? And no, it's not okay at this point to re-request. Please don't mess with something that is perfect!!!

Haha ok, thank you both for the advice! It's super helpful to hear the opinions of those much more experienced (:

Of course it’s personal preference, but I love the claw prongs that you have on your ring! To me personally the rounded prongs just look like blobs of platinum in the corners that catch my eye instead of elegant tips that visually melt right into the facet pattern. The claws are dainty and seamlessly blend right in with your diamond. Again it’s personal preference but I think it’s beautiful as is! Congratulations on your upcoming engagement!

Thank you so much :) I suppose I was wondering if the claw prongs were rather large, and if rounded would be less obvious - but perhaps you're right that actually the claws blend in better. Of course, it'll all be much smaller in real life - if only I didn't live on another continent, I could actually see it in person!
