Oh my, I laughed so hard when I saw this...it''s funny and kind of nasty at the same time LOL!!

That''s delightful, Irina! Very clever!

As for Widget''s earlier questions, these are all forms of agate and jasper (quartz). The "Mama" owl is a banded agate nodule that''s had cuts made to expose its interior pattern of concentric circles. It''s something like taking similar slices from a head of cabbage.

The "baby" owls feature "spherulites." They occur in jasper/agates known as "orbicular," which of course means "eye-like." (I guess both examples fall into that general classification). The piece they''re cut from happens to be fringed with quartz crystals that are grown together. The now-famous Ocean Jasper from Madagascar (image) is spherulitic with wonderful eye patterns and colors.

I don''t own these pieces except for the Ocean Jasper. They''re images I''ve collected over time to illustrate some of the many great forms quartz family minerals can take.

And thanks for teaching us, Richard! Everything is more enjoyable when you know something about it, and gems are certainly no exception.

I have to go get some work done. Y''all have a great day and weekend!

More please!

It''s actually a gem from a shell. It''s found in the Philippines. It is organic.

Operculum also has medical meaning with reference to a section of the frontal brain area.

Harriet, I guess more means you wanted to know about this stone? or did you mean post more photos of pet rocks?
