So today I'm at the mall shopping for a bday gift for my Mom and wander in your typical jewelry store. Wedding is less than 3 months away and FI and I have been looking around for wedding bands. We have a family jeweler, but are waiting for things we ordered to try on. So I decide to cruise in and take a look at the men's wedding bands.

Someone comes to help me immediately and I just explained we just started looking, and I wanted to just look around at all the different styles offered. So we're just chatting, she looks at my ering and starts asking a bunch of questions. It's so different, she's never seen anything like it before, yada yada. (Starset princess cut w/ halo, pave on shank and band) and calls her manager over to take a look. They are so sweet and then the manager offers to clean it. I hesitate because it's pretty clean, but what the hell right? Make that baby shine.

While I'm talking to original salesgirl, manager takes it, cleans it and brings it back. I put it on and glance down.

ONE OF THE DIAMONDS ON THE HALO IS GONE. IT'S JUST A BLACK HOLE.

I just told her immediately "Um, one of the diamonds is missing" She looked at the ring, went white. I thought she was going to start crying. I wanted to start crying. I've only been engaged for 5 months! So they frantically take their machine apart. They find it. And can't apologize enough. She then says we'll get this taken care of right away and have it ready for you by Tuesday.

UM NO! Not a chance I'm leaving it there. So I politely declined, had them put the loose diamond in a bag and wrap it up, and drove to our family jeweler. He is taking care of it ASAP, but with it being V-day tomorrow I have a feeling my left finger will be nakey for a couple days

But, you know, on the bright side at least I had the diamond. And I told the poor manager it wasn't her fault, these things happen. She did feel really bad.

I think that if this would have happened 10 years from now I would be upset.... but 5 months???? And yes, I do know that there's a higher possibility of this with pave. Still, it stinks!!

But to cheer me up, I went to spend time with my 6 mos old nephew. Nothing like a sweet chubby baby to make you smile again!

Aww, that really sucks. I hate giving up my ering for repairs (and I have a solitaire for 8 mos repaired, so your not doing too bad!).

Totally agree about the kids, they take away all the bad! Your nephew sounds like a cutie

I would be so scared! Well, at least it''s getting taken care of, right?

Neveah, I am so sorry. At least the diamond was found. Can you imagine how much worse it could be? What if you lost the diamond at the mall randomly on the escalator? It''s much better to find out this way.

Thanks for bringing this up, Nev...and sorry one of your diamonds fell out, what a stressful experience!

I''d just like to point out that anytime a jeweler offers to clean your rings, they should inspect the setting FIRST before taking it out of sight and dropping it in the US or steaming it. If there are any stones loose or prongs worn, basically if anything about your ring looks off, it should be brought to your attention before it''s cleaned. This protects all involved.

Oh you poor thing, I know just how you feel.

I got my ring back from Wink just before Christmas - I was just getting used to wearing it when FI managed to catch it with his bag and pull two of the prongs up and twist one.

It went straight in for emergency surgery - they reset the whole thing about 0.5mm lower so they didn''t have to start adding metal etc. I am soooo paranoid about people chipping my stone when they are working on it, so I was over the moon when I picked it up on Monday and it was perfect. To be honest I can''t see any difference from how it was when I got it at xmas - the 0.5mm reduction in height isn''t obvious at all.

I have a feeling that you are more likely to have problems early on with pave if you are going to have them at all. A lot of people have lost the odd stone if you look at the threads here.

The receptionist at my office has a 1cm thick micro-pave wedding-band that he had custom made at Aspreys. I endlessly make the poor guy take it off so I can try it on. He''s gay and my bling-buddy at work! Last week I noticed he wasn''t wearing it - he lost two stones in it for the second time so it was in being fixed.

I sometimes worry about these new turbo hand-driers like the Dyson Air Blade and if they are bad for jewellery?

Eeek! I''m sorry to read about your experience. Hopefully, your jeweler will take care of it and you''ll have it back soon!

Yikes!! Well at least they found it!!

Did they put it in an ultrasonic cleaner?? From what I read on the rocky fourm, US can make a diamond fall out in a pave setting. But i think its reletively inexpensive to reset the diamond.

Oh, you poor thing! But I''m glad you noticed while you were still there!!!

I''ve only had a couple of jewelry stores (other than my own) clean my ring, and I''ve always watched them inspect if before AND after the cleaning. I felt sorry for the girl once as I watched her count each of the 60 wee tiny diamonds on my e-ring setting. Mine are so small that I doubt I would notice if one fell out, but I still appreciated her counting. Now I''ll make SURE they do it each time! Be careful with your pave halo!!! And I hope you get it back quickly!

Thanks for all the kind words! And advice.... I will definitely be a lot more careful with who cleans my ring, and how!

And good news! The jeweler called this morning and has my ring ready! I can''t believe he did it for me so quickly. It was so sweet of him. I''m going to go on my lunch break and pick it up! Yea... I won''t be bling-less for our first Valentine''s as an engaged couple!!

wow thankfully they found it! I would have been so scared. Hopefully it will be back on your finger soon!

WHEW! Happy to hear all is well!

glad to hear you got your baby back.

Oh I''m so glad they found it! At least it came out there instead of just falling out and getting lost right?
