I''d love to see someone push out 7lbs of flesh and bone without meds, and do it in silence. THAT would be mission impossible in my book. Anyone ever visit a maternity ward? It''s like a visiting a haunted house, screams, moans, cussing....the works.

I had an epidural both times, and it was still impossible not to scream. The pressure is excruciating if not the pain. It''s like trying to pass the world''s fattest turd after 9 months of constipation (sorry for the imagery)

this is from thesuperficial.com

After days of speculating over how Tom Cruise managed to get Katie Holmes pregnant (I think we settled on either "with a lot of gentle sobbing" or "with a syringe"), people have begun to speculate over whether or not the couple will follow Scientology''s "silent birth" guidelines, which dictate that Holmes cannot talk or make any noise during labor, and cannot speak with the baby for the first seven days of its life.

also from there:

............
Scientology couple John Travolta and Kelly Preston are urging Katie Holmes to have a ''silent birth'' when she delivers fiancé Tom Cruise''s baby next year and follow the church''s strict doctrines.
Scientologists believe children should be brought into the world without any fuss and be allowed to quietly get used to their surroundings. That means no music, no chatting and no expressions of pain from the mother.

Preston explains, "It''s just because everything in moments of pain is really recorded and you want to have that [the birth] peaceful and clear of sort of suggestions or different words that can then affect them [babies] in their future."

I think that "silent birth" thing is absolutely the most DISGUSTING thing I''ve ever heard of. Why is scientology popular among celebrities? Its just NOT RIGHT!

OK so they have to have a silent birth, does that mean that Katie Holmes can''t punch Tom instead of vocalizing her pain while she is in labour, or would that make too much noise?

What a load of tripe.

These people are truly bizarre. I don''t like to discuss or criticize the religious choices of others but this just sounds like pure insanity to me. Silent birth? A mother not speaking to her baby for the first seven days of its life? Give me a break.

Yes, they are bizarre. Bizarre to the point of pathology. It is also bizarre, unnatural, and probably harmful for a mother not to speak to her baby for seven days. On the other hand, I believe that the Japanese prize calm in their maternity wards. I do not recall where I read it, but I read one American woman''s account of giving birth in Japan. She screamed and was (gently) chastized for disturbing the calm on the floor. She said she didn''t know of any American woman who didn''t scream!

Scientology is not a religion, it''s a cult. They hide under the religious designation to be tax exempt. It is one of the biggest money making entities in the world. Even Tom Cruise admitted it''s not a religion, and that people of different faiths go there to "learn."

I heard about this silent birth on the radio today and am floored.
