Just wondering if anyone stayed there rather than on the strip? We always stay on the strip , but wanted to experience something different.Any suggestions? Thank you..

Scarleta,
Are you talking about Fremont Street where the Gold Nugget and those places are? I only saw it one time a long time ago but have not seen it in more recent years, sorry.

Skippy you are such a sweet heart always willing to help out.Thanks.
Yes that is the part of Vegas that I have in mind.Just for something different and perhaps more relaxing...

BIH: thanks just wondering have you been there? Old Vegas I mean? One of the original hotels is Golden Nuget and it has great reviews?
Will definitely look into Ritz and Marriott. Thanks for the links..

The Golden Nuggett is very nice - I believe it is one of Steve Wynn''s first vegas hotels - and it has just undergone a major renovation. The pool area is really cool with a waterslide (or tube, actually) that runs through a shark tank.

Jennifer: you just made my day (or night I should say)...Thanks for that.I read good reviews about it.Do you recommend anything to do in that area...

Hmmmm, well you could spend time at the hotel/casino - I think the restaurants are great and there is probably a show (not sure what, though). I''m sure they probably have a nice spa. I have to say that the Golden Nugget is the only hotel I would stay at in downtown vegas. The Fremont street experience is pretty cool (maybe you have seen it on CSI). The best way I can describe it is a street with a "roof" and when it gets dark, lights and video are projected onto the "ceiling". Its definitely unique - and there are a ton of street vendors. However, there is a crime problem downtown - so I don''t know that I would venture too far off of Fremont street on foot. There is a pretty cool art scene down there. You might find some cool galleries and exhibits - and I know a lot of Lofts (live/work) have been (or are being) built, to try and counter the crime by bringing in more "upscale" folks. If you gamble - I believe the slots are a little more "loose" downtown than on the strip. And hey, you could always take a cab to the strip - you''ll see quite a few little wedding chapels in between the strip and downtown. I hope that helps. I hope you go when it is warm so that you can make the most of the pool.

Ok good--cuz I was gonna say, I stayed there a little while back and it was NOT NICE... but if it's been recently renovated, that is obviously a different story.

I agree on the crime being higher up there--I'd rather stay off-strip (to the east or west) than north. Or in one of the hotels not near the strip at all, like the spa/golf desert resorts or something.

I would go VISIT the Old Vegas hotels...but i wouldn''t STAY there....DH and I ventured over to the GN and Stardust when they were still alive a few years ago and the visit was enough for us to say to each other "hey, that was cool, but let''s go back to our posher digs." I heard recently that most of the old strip is getting torn down anyway? I wouldn''t stay in any of those old hotels since there are so many other nicer hotels that you can stay in for pretty low prices nowadays...
