MOH measurements are

34
29 (she was measuring herself and I told her not to suck in at all). This is the one that's throwing me off).
37

Um. What size do you think I should order???

Well, it has to fit the biggest part of her...you can''t order a smaller size and make the waist bigger, so it looks to me like she needs a 12 that will be taken in in the bust and hips.

Agreed - it has to be big enough. . .she''ll get the other parts taken in later

Do you have a picture of the dress? the size you should order might be determined by how fitted the dress is.

So I just gotta ask... "Hollow"???

So I just gotta ask... ''Hollow''???

The Hollow-to-Hem measurement is when they measure from the base of the neck (just above the collarbone) to the hem.

Gotcha -- thanks!

Hi, I've been a lurker over here, as I'm not a BWW just yet (but gearing up!) however, as a former costumer and many times a BM, I do feel confident chiming in to say that, while any shop will tell you to order the larger size, you really should go by the waist and bust first, IF (BIG IF) the skirt of the dress is flared out/loose/ flowy in any way. IF it is a fitted silohette, then yes, go up a size. Otherwise, you are adding uneeded alterations. Good luck!

ETA: So my vote is the 10

lol I measured myself last night and had the SAME REACTION when trying to figure out what size dress to order (a random dress I found online).
I just gave up and didn''t order it.

But now that mayachal chimed in, I may try it again!

I think she needs to go to a dress shop and get professionally measured. If those are right then yes, you need her to get the size big enough for her waist. The rest can be altered.

Sure she measured her natural waist and not her "this is where my low riding jeans fit" waist?

Ditto. A lot of girls don''t actually know where their waist is. Make sure she got the right part. Or tell her to go into a dress shop and do it. Most places will measure you free or charge (around here anyway)

i'm totally confused by the sizing -- it seems like they're making the waists awfully small on these compared to the hips. definitely make sure she's measuring her natural waist.

ditto. I''d get her to pop in somewhere and get measured professionally. Once she has that done order the dress for her bigger size as the rest can then be taken in.

Thank you all for chiming in.

I''d love to ask her to get professionally measured. Truth to tell. But it''s taken me from January till NOW (April) to get her to SELF measure. So I think I''m just going to have to make the best of things. I did tell her to measure at the "dip" in her waist.

The sample fit her perfectly and I think it was either an 8 or a 10.

SO I''m inclined to go with a ten. Hopefully it will fit her fine. Fortunately it''s not satin and can be pretty easily altered.

the best description i''ve gotten about how to find your natural waist for measuring is to stand up and bend over with your hands on your hips -- your natural waist is right where you fold over, and if you slide your hands up your sides from your hips you can pretty easily feel where that is.

If that were my measurements (and I''d been told "don''t suck it in" on the waist), I''d probably order an 8. Just standing up straight and sucking in a bit, my waist gets alot smaller, so I''m sure I''d be fine in the more snug one. Plus I''m lazy and broke and would want to avoid alterations.

Since she can''t manage to get measured, do you think she''ll get the dress altered? Looks like the 10 would be pretty big in the bust. I''d ask her to measure her waist again, sucking in very gently (but still comfortable), or have her put on a dress that is snug but fits (or spanx or the like if she''ll be wearing it) and measure over that.

So, I think you could probably get away with the 8, but 10 would be safer.

Yeah, the bust has me concerned laine as she measured her bust with a padded strapless bra on. Fortunately the gown has straps, so that''s one thing I don''t think I have to worry too much about.

As for alterations, that''s something I was concerned about too. She just got a new job (first ever job actually, she''s just finishing up her PhD) in Missouri, and will be moving there in a month. So I know her life will be hectic pretty much straight through to the wedding, and she''s never lived in Mississippi (or is it Missouri, I can''t remember) before so I''m not sure she''ll be able to get the thing altered in time. Fortunately we''re ordering in black, which is also most alterations friendly.

My first suggestion would be to have her try on a dress from that designer. They all vary so much.
You did say the sample fit, so if it fit then I would order in that size. When I ordered my wedding dress, the sample fit perfectly. If we had gone with the size chart, it said to order a dress 2 sizes larger! I ordered in the sample size and it was perfect. Even the size charts don''t seem to make sense sometimes!
You said she''s moving to Missouri? Do you know where specifically? I live in Missouri and could maybe recommend someone for alterations depending on where she is.
Good luck!

My advice is don't assume that because her waist is way off from the size chart that it's an incorrect measurement. Mine are pretty darn close to hers. Some gals just don't tuck in 6+ inches at the waist. If the sample fit her, then the absolute best way to order the dress is to find out, for sure, what size the sample was that she tried on. Ask her - she might remember. I think most of us remember trying on a dress only to discover that the number is 2-3 sizes bigger than what we normally wear.

She has a waist. It''s not as pronounces as mine (I go in about 6 or more inches)... but she''s very tall (5''10") and thin with it. So... I think I''m going to order the 10-- with extra length (she''s wearing really high heels) for her. If she needs a little taking in, and she come in on Friday (which she is) I think my aunts or someone can do it for her at the last minute without too much concern, we have alot of good seamstresses in the family. Wedding''s not till Sunday. LOL.

I despise size charts. They always have me all over the place. I''m an 6-8-10 on that size chart and when I tried on that same brand about a year ago in a store I fit a size 6 with the bust needing to taken in and the length hemmed. Stupid POS sizing charts!!

I vote for either the 8 or 10, whichever she tried on it the store. While the dress can be altered, altering too much will be expensive and could affect the design of the dress.

Just wanted to say that, when I read the thread title, I thought you were talking about your wedding gown as if it was a she, which I thought was cute.
